It is probably the case that Gertie caught TB from her young husband as they died within a year of each other leaving their only surviving child, Mary Adaline, in the care of Gertie's parents. I can only assume that Mary was left with her maternal grandparents because her mother was living there at the time and the paternal parents were in KS and had a younger family of children to raise.
