Joe Foster was a physician in Lancaster County. He attende d the Medical College of South Carolina 1858-1859. His Prec eptor was R.E. Wylie. He graduated from the Medical Colleg e of New Orleans, and served as a Medical Officer during th e Civil War. He rose from Private to Surgeon in the Fift h South Carolina Volunteers (Jenkins' Brigade), and was fun ctioning as Division Surgeon at the surrender. He was burie d as a Brigadier General, but there is no record of his hol ding that rank.

RITES TODAY
Funeral services for Miss Gertrude Foster, 75, will be c onducted today at 5:30 at the Dunbar Funeral home.
Committal services will be held in the Presbyterian chur chyard in Lancaster at 12 noon Saturday.
The services will be conducted by the Rev. Hubert Wardla w, pastor.
She had been in declining health for four months and ser iously ill for 24 hours.
Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of Dr. Joseph He nry Foster and Charlotte Brown Foster. She had lived in Col umbia since 1922.
Miss Foster was educated in the public schools of Lancas ter and was a first honor A.B. graduate of Converse College . She did graduate work in education a number of summers a t the University of Virginia and received her M.A. and Ph.D . degrees at the University of South Carolina. She was a me mber of the Phi Beta Kappa society.
She taught mathematics in the Columbia city high school s for 12 years, then retired from the city schools and taug ht mathematics at the University of South Carolina for seve n years.
Miss Foster was retired from the University faculty thre e years ago.
Before coming to Columbia, she had taught in Lancaster , Darlington, Sumter, Tampa, Fla., and Birmingham, Ala.
She was a member of the Lancaster Presbyterian church.
Miss Foster is survived by one sister, Miss Catherine Fo ster of Columbia; one brother, Dr. Ralph K. Foster of Colum bia; six nephews, Charlie C. Foster of Columbia, Dr. Henr y D. Foster of LaPorte, Tex., Ralph Kelsey Foster, Jr., o f Columbia, Joseph Henry Foster of Oak Ridge, Tenn., Floy d B. Smith, Jr., of Lockport, N.Y., and John Cantzon Foste r of Jacksonville, Fla.; eleven nieces, Mrs. C.H. Bistlin e of Columbia, Mrs. Helen Foster Spoonts of Timmonsville, M rs. Katherine Foster Downie of Little Rock, Ark., Mrs. Davi d O. Holman of Timmonsville, Mrs. John Webber of Verona, N. Timmonsville, July 23- Attended by friends from all part s of the state, funeral services for Dr. John Cantzon Foste r, prominent physician of Tampa, Fla., were held this after noon at Bird cemetery, Timmonsville, where the interment to ok place. The simple rites were conducted by two local mini sters, the Rev. C.S. Hornsby and the Rev. J.C. Inabinet . A mixed choir sang the hymns.
Doctor Foster, a native of Lancaster and for 30 year s a surgeon of the Atlantic Coast Line, died here Saturda y while on a visit with Mrs. Foster to their daughter, Mrs . D.O. Holman. He was connected with many prominent South C arolina families and before moving to Tampa practiced medic ine in Lake City, where he was actively connected with th e Presbyterian church, of which he was an outstanding membe r. Beautiful flowers mantled his grave.
General Notes for Child Carl Atkins Foster Dr.
"One of the leading citizens and physicians of Columbia, C arl Atkins Foster, M.D., is a member of a family notable fo r the men it has given to the professions, and a scion of a ncestors who are among the early Scotch-Irish settlers of t he State. He was born in the town of Lancaster, Lancaster C ounty, April 1, 1879, a son of Dr. Joseph Henry Foster an d Charlotte Rebecca (Brown) Foster. Dr. Joseph Henry Foste r was a native of Lancaster County and lived in the famou s Waxhaw Settlement, in which President and General Andre w Jackson was born. Henry Foster, a great-grandparent, dona ted the land upon which the old Waxhaw Presbyterian Churc h now stands, in the graveyard of which the father of Andre w Jackson lies buried.
To John Foster and Ann Kelsey (Cantzon) Foster a large f amily was born, but only two grew to manhood; Captain Joh n Cantzon Foster, born in 1833, died in 1910; and Dr. Josep h Henry Foster, born April 20, 1835, died May 23, 1885. The y were both prepared for college at Mount Zion Institute a t Winnsboro, and were graduates of the South Carolina Colle ge in the class of 1855. Dr. Joseph Henry Foster attended t he Charleston Medical College and was a graduate of the Ne w Orleans School of Medicine in 1860. He entered the Confed erate Army as a private in Company A, Lancaster Grays. On J uly 3, 1862, he was appointed surgeon and served as surgeo n to the end of the war.
Dr. Joseph Henry Foster and Charlotte Rebecca (Brown) Fo ster were the parents of eleven children including the foll owing: 1. Jessie 2. Eloise 3. Joseph Henry, deceased, a for mer member of the Lancaster County bar. 4. Gertrude, a teac her in the Columbia High School. 5. Dr. John Cantzon, a phy sician in Tampa, Florida. 6. Dr. Carl Atkins, of whom furth er. 7. Dr. Ralph Kelsey, a physician of Columbia. 8. Cather ine. 9. Josephine.
After attending the public schools of Lancaster, Carl At kins Foster matriculated at the South Carolina College, an d was graduated with the class of 1900. He graduated with t he degree of Doctor of Medicine at the Medical College of V irginia in 1904. Dr. Foster returned to South Carolina an d began the practice of medicine in Timmonsville. Here he r emained until 1921. In that year he moved to Columbia and h as pursued a general practice of his profession. In the com paratively brief period of time he has gained an enviable r eputation as a physician and a large clientele.
Dr. Foster is a member of the Columbia Medical Society a nd the South Carolina State Medical Association. He is a me mber of Pi Mu Fraternity of the Medical College of Virgini a and Chi Psi Fraternity of the University of South Carolin a. He is a Mason and a member of the Omar Shrine of Charles ton.
In 1908 Dr. Foster married Carrie Lou Dorroh, of Laurens , and they were the parents of two sons: 1. Charlie Cantzon , a graduate of the University of South Carolina. 2. Henr y Dorroh, a graduate of the University of South Carolina an d now a student at the University of Illinois. Mrs. Foste r died 19 February, 1916."
