General Notes (Husband)
John Samuel Cureton was a student at The Citadel when th e Civil War broke out. At 18, he immediately enlisted a s a private under Captain John D. White on 8 April, 1861 i n Lancaster, South Carolina. He served in Charleston unti l 11 April 1862, when he joined Company H, 4th Regimental C avalry, known as the Catawba Rangers, under Captain John C antzon Foster. He was promoted to 4th sergeant by 31 Januar y, 1864. After the war, he returned to the Waxhaws as a pla nter, then moved to Florida in 1884.

BROWN The ship "Hector" and her consort (name unknow n ) s a i led from London and reached the Boston Colony, Ju n e 2 6 , 16 37. Among the fifty men who came on these shi p s wa s Fr anci s Brown. In the company under Theophilus E at on an d Joh n Dav enport he went in September of the sam e y ear t o loo k fo r a site for a new colony. They settle d up on Qui nnipia ck, o r New Haven, and seven men, amon g the m being F ranci s Brown , were left there during th e winte r of 1637-3 8. Th e remaind er of the party returne d to Bos ton and in t he spr ing of 163 8 returned, bringin g their f amilies and o thers w ith them. I n the divisio n of land "s even of them d welt o n the bank sid e," tha t is, on what i s now East Wate r stree t, fronting th e ha rbor, among the m being Francis B rown.
