General Notes (Husband)

[bobspu.ged]

Hulet Brown enlisted as a private of Company C of the 37 Regiment of the Kentucky Mounted Volunteer Infantry on Jun. 27,1863. The regiment bore an honorable part in all battles and skimishes in the localities in which it served, some of the most important, being at Glasgow, KY, Jackson Co. Tn, Saltsvile, Va. Mt Starling, KY, and Kings Salt Works, VA. The regiment served under Captain George Stone and Col. Hansom. Col. Hansom was wounded and captured at Saltvile. Hulet was confined in General Hospital at Glasgow for three months, and Lexington for two weeks. He was captured at Glasgow by Col. Huse's Rebel Cavalry but finaly released at Kettle Creek, Tn. detailed at Laxington to take charge of horses. He was honorably discharged in December 1864 at Louisvile, KY.

The above description of service was taken from a scroll which was presented to his wife, Beth, on 15 Feb, 1897. The document stated with the following inscription:
"May future generations never forget the Debt of Gratitude they owe to the Brave Boys in Blue who on land and sea, volnteered their services during the dark days of rebelion, suffering and bloodshed which marked the years from 1861- 1865 and may our motto always be Liberty and Union, Now and Forever, One and inseparable."

Hulet returned to Monroe Co, KY, where on 30 Dec. 1869, he married Elizabeth A. "Beth" Emberton. To this union were born three children.
The eldest was George. He married Emma Pedigo on 29 Jan. 1903. They had two sons. Ralph, born 12 Jun. 1913, and died in Nov. of the same year. Emma died 3 Sep. 1913.

George and Emma are buried in the Akersvile Cemetery.

Lilie Brown was the second child of Hulet and "Beth" She was a victim of consumption. She knew of her serious ilness and wished to be baptized, which was accomplished in a wooden trough at home. Her knowledge of her impending death is best exempified in what she wrote in her sisters Dona's autograph book in January of 1900, when she wished Dona, a long and healthy life.

Hulet, "Beth", Lilie, Dona and R.H. are all buried in Mt. Gilead Cemetary, Monroe Co., KY. (family cemetary)

General Notes (Husband)

m1. Mary E Boswell m2. Ida Josephine Brown

Levi died of of Typhoid fever the same year his son William Carroll was born. He left the family with the farm, consisting of 121 acres, thirty seven head of cattle and other personal property.

Cornelius and Rebecca Emberton, parents of Levi, came from Monroe County, Kentucky and stayed with his family for some time following his death. Rebecca and Josie did not get along. The farm did not prosper. Cornelius and Rebecca went back to Kentucky. Josie sold things off little by little until there was no living left. When W.C. was four years old they left the farm to live with Josie's widowed mother, Sarah (Grist) Brown.

General Notes for Child William Carroll Emberton

[bobspu.ged]

After Williams father passed away and he was four years old, his mother moved the family in with her widowed mother Sarah (Grist) Brown. He could remember riding a horse from the farm to Marble City- one mile from what is now the amusement park "Dogpatch", Arkansas. A hard journey.

The family lived very hard, often having little to eat. Once in a while they had squirrel or chicken. He did not taste beef until he was quite a big boy. They ate cornbread, biscuits and molasses, and sometimes little of that. He could remember going to five schools in Arkansas, Hunting with his fathers cap and ball rife, fishing when the "signs were right", walking the hills with his grandmother, Sarah Brown, in search of herbs, Ginseng, Seneca, Yellow Root, etc, which they traded at the store for necessites. They used turpintine on wounds, sugar with kerosene for croup. He loved Arkansas. He said his feet were so tough from going barefoot they would strike sparks as they hit the rocks when he ran over the hills.

In 1904, the family came to Indian Territory, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma. They came by train and marveled at seeing bananas and oranges for the first time. Upon arriving in Oklahoma they spent the night in a hotel, marveling even more at seeing their first electric light. W.C. and Benton spent most of the night trying to blow it out. They picked cotton and stayed a while in a town called Edwards, but did not like it and went back to Arkansas.

They came back to Oklahoma in 1910. The Brown family having moved here to work in the mines. The last school W.C. went to was in Craig, Oklahoma. His first job ws at Craig, driving a slip team and helping to build a bridge there. When he was 13 years old he worked in a livery stable for 50 cents a day. He later worked on the railroad and at the coal mines at Haileyville and Craig. He was a "powder monkey" at the mines and did not work below. His brother went into the mines at the age of 15. His uncles, John Willis Brown and Columbus Turner Brown, also worked in the mines. His mother ran the hotel in Haileyville. During this time W.C. lived with "Lum" Brown.

His sister, Vertie Lee, married a man named Tom Threlkeld, who taught W.C. to hang paper. Tom took Vertie Lee to New Mexico because she had Tuberculosis. She died there of the Flu during the epidemic of 1918. She was only 22 years old. W.C. never got over the loss of his sister.

On 31 May 1919, W.C. left home to get a pound of butter. He was next heard from in Germany. He had enlisted in the army at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. He went from there to Camp Mead, Maryland. Then France, Germany, Belgium and back to Camp Mead. He was honorably discharged from Camp Mead, Maryland, on 6 August 1922, Corporal, Company "C", 16th Tank Battalion.

He returned to Haileyville, Oklahoma where he met Elizabeth Flynn at an Armistice Day party in the fall of 1922. They were married 24 Feburary 1923. He went to work firing boilers at the mines.

The mines closed down just a few months after their marriage. They divided the money they had between them and W.C. roamed the country looking for work. His funds sooon ran out so he hopped a freight train near Wellington, Kansas. He slipped and ws pulled under the train and forty-two cars ran over the edge of his right foot. He was drug into a coal shed where a Doctor amputated part of his foot. By the time he was taken to a hospital in Wellington, he had blood poisoning. The foot was amputated and then fart of the leg, about half way to the knee. Soon after he learned to walk again, he turned to the trade that he learned from Tom Thelkeld and followed it until he was 75 years of age. Many times in the early years he worked on crutches and he would crawl from his past board ot the wall. And many times when he wore his artificial leg to work he would have to pry it off with a kitchen knife when he got home, his leg would be so swollen. He finally built an artificial leg himself that worked better for him. Altho it was heavy, he wore it for the rest of his life.

In january of 1925, their first son, William Levi was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma. In December of 1926, the second son, Carroll Marion ws born in Durant, Oklahoma. And the last son, Joseph Patrick was born, also in Durant, in Febuary 1936.

In 1937, the family came to Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Then back to Oklahoma City by 1941 to settle permanently.

W.C. tried to enlist in World War 11. Failing that, he worked at Tinker Field as an Inspector for the duration of the war. During that time he was sent to Maryland to test gliders. When the war ended, he returned to his trade.

He lived a quite life. He was a quiet man. He worked hard. He loved his family. He loved to fish. He loved nature. He had a grand sense of humor. He was very wise. He had so much integrity and he had so much patience.

He suffered from Emhysema for many years before he died. He did not complain. He said he had lived a good long life, much longer than he had ever expected and that he was ready to go. He accepted death as he accepted all the hard things that happened to him in life.

He died at South Community Hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 26 May 1984. He is buried at Arlington Memory Gardens, Midwest City, Oklahoma, near the Statue in the military section of the cemetery.
