BIO: Per Eva McCARTY, James BROWN and Lavisa LAY were married on 09 AUG 1858 in Campbell County, TN. "She and her husband had to leave Tennessee and they went to California. Then on to Verde Valley of Arizona. They had one daughter named Sarah. Sarah married a man by the name of Davis and they adopted a daughter named Ella Davis. Sarah died at an early age and James and Levisa took Ella and raised her. ... Her" (compiler thinks this refers to Lavisa) "husband killed or thought he killed a man in Tennessee, and they left so he would not have to stand trial. Apparently he was a very wealthy man." After proofreading material from compiler, Mrs. McCARTY added the following note: "1858 Register of Names to Marriage Licenses. Page 347-348 James S. BROWN to Levisy LAY -- Issued Aug. 9, 1858 - 'I celebrated the rites of Matrimony between the within parties Aug. 9, 1858. W. Lynch, J.P. Campbell Co. TN."

BIO: Concerning Lavisa LAY, the daughter of Mary P. and "Jack", Eva McCARTY wrote the following: "Lavisa was the second child of John "Jack" and Mary Pauline O'DELL LAY.
