My father graduated from Franklin College in the depths of the depression. Through a chance encounter between my grandmother and an old boyfriend of hers on the Inter Urban to Indianapolis, my father got a job as a bookkeeper with the Ladoga Canning Co. A few months later, a freight car of pumpkin spoiled. No salesman wanted to deal with the irate customer, so they sent the newest person on the staff, my father. He was very depressed when he returned, since he could only persuade the customer to replace the spoiled pumpkin. Ladoga was estatic that they did not have a lawsuit on their hands. Fron that day forward, my Dad was a salesman.
When I was born, he was a traveling salesman. During WWII, he was with the Quartermaster Corps in Chicago. After the war, he became Vice President of Sales for National Fruit Product Co. (White House apple products) in Winchester, VA. He spent the rest of his life there. He was active in church and civic affairs. My father loved to play golf. He was also probably the shyest successful salesman who ever lived. He was a wise, gentle, and kind man with a wonderful sense of humor. REF: 1. Obituary: photocopy saved by Leta Grubb
