LAY: Vivian LAY, Birmingham, AL Ed HUDSON, Knoxville, TN Bible Records 6. "WILLIAM QUILLIN LAY," by Mary Alice LAY EARNHART; photocopy provided to compiler by Eva McCARTY. Mrs. EARNHART is a direct desc. of Wm. Q. LAY, via his son, George Calvin.
BIO: Eva McCARTY included the following in a letter to compiler in 1996:
"William Q., 'Uncle Billy'...and Louisa are both buried in Sardis Methodist Cemetery where they have a huge monument..."
In June, 1997, Mrs. McCARTY sent a photocopy of an article re William Quillin and his family, written by a descendent of William's son, George Calvin LAY. In this article, Mrs. EARNHART writes --
William Quillin Lay was born near Tazewell, Claiborne County, TN. on May 7, 1847. The son of John Lay and Mary Pauline O'Dell Lay, was one of a family of ten children. On the 14th day of December 1873 he was united in marriage to Louisa Jane Brown in Marion County, Tennessee. Louisa Jane Brown was the daughter of George Washington Brown and America Alder Brown...
In 1867 William Quillin Lay went to Indiana near Lebanon and later to Stanton. During this time he devoted his energy to farming, and the timber business, later he occupied the position of weigher in a mine. In 1870 he took up his residence in Campbell County, Tn. and a year later, 1871, came to Marion County. For eleven years he engaged in farming near Victoria and then he purchased very desirable property at Rankin's Cove, about five miles east of Jasper. William Quillin Lay was educated in the common schools, was always a busy and a useful man. William Quillin Lay and wife Louisa Jane Brown Lay were the parents of ten children...
..., William Quillin Lay, built a log school house on the hill a mile from their home, where three roads joined...
William Quillin and Louisa Jane Brown Lay also had thirty-four grandchildren.
COMPILER's NOTE: Compiler found a list of the men who served with the 2nd TN Vol. Inf. Reg. on a computer internet genealogy site, Sep. 1997. On that list appeared a "William P. LAY". Information given was as follows: LAY, William P: Private; H; Unk; 00; 1 Aug 1863 - 2 Mar 1864. Unk. Discharge certificate furnished by War Department 28 Apr 1891. Details of separation not clear. Unfortunately, the "00" is in the position of "Age of the soldier". There is no way to confirm whether or not this might be William Q.'s record. Compiler has no information from descendants of William Q. that he was a veteran of the Civil War. (The "Unk" used above is in the position which is used for the veteran's place of birth or residence at the time he was inducted.) Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-O'Dell.GED

General Notes for Child George Calvin Lay
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: The following biography was written by George Calvin LAY's daughter, Mary Alice (LAY) EARNHART, copied and sent to compiler by Eva McCARTY.
"Now we take up George Calvin and wife, Mary Elizabeth HAMILTON... George Calvin LAY was born on March 7, 1876 near Victoria, Tn. and died in his home, Route 2, Whitwell, Tn. Oak Grove Community as the reulsts of a heart attack, at approximately 7:00 A.M. on Feb. 23, 1957. He was buried in the Srdis Methodist Cemetery near Victoria, Tn.
George Calvin LAY was the third child of William Quillin and Louisa Jane BROWN LAY and was one of a family of ten children. He grew to manhood in a very attractive, for its day, large, log house, consisting of six large rooms and an attic.
On December 11, 1901, he was united in holy wedlock to Mary Elizabeth HAMILTON. She was the daughter of Elbert Kesterson HAMILTON and Margaret WEATHERSPOON HAMILTON. Mary Elizabeth HAMILTON LAY was born...
George Calvin LAY attended the common school that was built by his father, where three roads joined in Rankin's Cove about five miles east of Jasper, Tn. He with his brothers and sisters were regular in their attendance in this school. It fell George's duty to carry their lunches to school and this he did, carrying it all together in a half bushel basket through the rain, snow and mud they trudged regularly, as they were trained that schooling was a very important part of life.
As a young man, George went west to find work and earn enough money to come home and marry his beautiful sweetheart, Mary..., however, they were not engaged prior to his trip west. The western trip was a big venture for one so young, who had never been out of state before. His plans were to go to ARIZONA and visit relatives, live there until he could secure work and make other plans from there. He was fortunate in finding work in and near Globe and Phoenix, AZ. and also bought a lot in that area. He kept his heart set on marriage to Mary HAMILTON and their correspondance was regular. After awhile, George became homesick and came back to his parents home in Rankin's Cove. He very soon afterwards became engaged to Mary Elizabeth HAMILTON, and they were married on Dec. 11, 1901.
George and his young bride, Mary, established their home near the William Quillin LAY homestead ...and George worked on his father's farm. Their first hardship...shortly after the birth of thier first child ...Charlie Howard...on a cold, windy winter night near midnight, George and Mary awakened by a roar and loud popping and cracking. Their house was on fire and almost ready to fall in on them. They sprang from bed, grabbing their baby, Charlie, and managed to break and get through a window...the only thing they were able to save... was ... a Singer sewing machine and a pocket watch...This machine always carried the scars...remained in the family home...handed down to their daughter, Lou Celia...
...George and Mary and baby Charles were immediately taken to the home of his parents, ...until they felt they could start out on their own again.
Mary, being the youngest child in the ...HAMILTON family, was to inherit her home far, ... already been deeded to her, ...move into the log cabin which was already on the property and George would work on the farm for her father...until her aged father had them move into the house with him to care for him in his last days.
There was some 105 acres in this farm, some mountain with valuable timber and an ideal cattle farm, however George preferred crop farming...
...In December 1951, George Calvin and wife Mary Elizabeth HAMILTON LAY celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary, with an open house in their large country home...many friends shared in making this occasion a joyous one for them...
George enjoyed good health and was active and youthful looking, for a man of his age, up until three years previous to his death. He was at that time stricken with shingles in the nerves around the right side of his body and was never free from pain that was brought on him by this disease. His health failed fast from that time..."

General Notes for Child Celia Annie Lay
[bobspu.ged]
BIO: Although Mrs. McCARTY did not mention the fact that Celia Ann and William Marshall LAY were twins, she has given the same month and year of birth for both of them. Compiler is not sure whether this was an error or the two were twins. In the notes sent on this family, Mrs. McCARTY wrote that she had omitted dates of the marriages cited, but later mailings contained the work of Mary Alice (LAY) EARNHART, a neice of Celia (LAY) BLAKE's, which contained many of the dates, places and names of additional family members.

Mary Alice (LAY) EARNHART, neice of Celia LAY BLAKE, and author of the biographical information on the members of the Wm. Q. LAY family. Born source: Mary Alice (LAY) EARNHART, grand daughter of Wm. Q. LAY, via Eva McCARTY. Source: Elizabeth (Ann) Gilchrist-Jun 1998-O'Dell.GED
