General Notes (Husband)
Son of Robert PEASE and Margaret KING. On Nov. 25, 16 7 7 , J o hn appears on a jury list, and on Jun. 3, 1689, h i s r emar ri ed widow disposed of ist in his estate. Marri e d fir st Lu cy , daughter of Mrs. Margaret WESTON by he r fi rst hu sband , an d step-daughter of Francis WESTON. M arrie d secon d abou t 164 8.
This man lived a troubled life. Emigrating to Sal e m a t t h e age of 27, he married into the Weston family , w hic h wa s e mbroiled with the local authorities over t heol ogy . Hi s fath er in law was banished and later die d in pr iso n fo r his her etical teachings. His mother i n law wen t ma d an d his wife , faced with arrest, was for ced to rec ant s hortl y before sh e died. In 1644, the yea r his fathe r-in-l aw wa s banished, h is mother and brothe r died and J ohn Pea se sol d his propert y in Salem and 'f led' to Marth a's Vine yard, b ecoming one o f the origina l settlers. The re he rem arried a nd peaceably r aised a s econd family unt il he join ed in th e rebellion agai nst t he autocratic rul e of Govern or Mayhe w in 1673. In th e w ake of reprisals b y the Govern or follow ing his reestabl i shment of authorit y, John Peas e left Mart ha's Vineyar d fo r the mainland, p robably for P ortsmouth, N H, althou gh it i s not known fo r sure when o r where he died.
November 1634: Sailed with his brother Robert on th e s h i p F rancis from Ipswich arriving at Boston late i n 1634.
3 Nov 1635, Salem court record: "Ordered that John Pe a s e s h albe whipt and bound to his good behaviour for st ri ke in g hi s mother [in law] Mrs. Weston & deryding of h e r & f o r dyver s other misdemeanors & other evell carria ge s" (Ma ss . Col. R ecords, I, 155)
1637, Salem: mentioned as having land in the early Sa l e m T o wn Record. "Robert Pease and his brother"
23 April 1638, Salem: granted "five acres of land nex t a d j o ining to Samuell Cominge neer unto the watermill"
18 June 1644, Salem: sold his house and 75 acres o f l a n d t o his neighbor, Richard Ingersoll.
(His father in law being arrested in 1643, his wife arr e s t e d and/or recanting her 'heretical views', his moth e r a n d br other dying in 1644, all make his removal to M ar tha ' s Viney ard in 1645 understandable.) Martha's Vineyard Records:
23 March 1646/7, Edgartown: sold ten acres of land at M a t t a keeset to John Bland. 1650, New London, CT: evidently involved in land transa c t i o ns here. Probable that in these years he was invol v e d i n so me land transactions in Connecticut before ret ur ni ng t o th e Vineyard.
Little record of him in the next twenty years, alth o u g h h e acquired a good deal of land and scattered lo t s o n th e Vi neyard. Evidently lived first at Mattakees e t an d the n on th e first lot of the Five and Twenty, si tu ate d at th e north e nd of town at the place ever sinc e kn ow n as Pease 's Point ( land which eventually was sol d t o Han nah Mayhe w Daggett i n 1692)
4 March 1674: will (Dukes Deeds, I, 340)
Evidently left the island following the dispute with Go v e r n or Mayhew. Not known when or where he died, but i t i s h ig hl y likely it was at Portsmouth, NH, as that i s whe re h i s wid ow remarried.
Research: Banks states that he devoted more time to J o h n P e ase's history than anyone owing to the claim tha t J oh n Pe as e first settled on the island in 1632 and h a d a cla im pr io r to Thomas Mayhew. This alleged settlem en t coul d not b e bo rn out by the discovered facts of hi s l ife.
Caulkins, an early historiographer of Norwich and New L o n d o n, CT, confounds John Sr. and John Jr., the latte r li vi n g o n a lot granted to his father, he not being o f ag e wh e n th e grant was made. This is perhaps where th e dea th pl ac e ent ry of New London in the Ancestral Fil e come s from , al thoug h it is not known for sure where J ohn Sr . died.
