General Notes for Child Sydney Bruce

"Sydney Bruce -- World War Veteran" by Olive Boggs Newton

"Sydney Bruce comes down from old, influential families that have left their impress on the social, industrial and financial history of Pickens County. His patriotic ancestry dates back to the War of the Revolution, during which his great-great-grandfather, John Blassingame, fought valiantly in the American Army. His grandfather, James E. Hagood, offered himself three times for service in the Confederate Army. He was rejected each time on account of physical defects, and was forced to content himself with giving material aid to the Confederacy. In December, 1861, the General Assembly of South Carolina passed an Act creating the Soldiers' Board of Relief to give aid to the families of soldiers serving in the Confederate Army. On December 21, 1861, B Boards of Relief for every County in the State were appointed by joint resolution of the General Assembly. The following constituted the Soldiers' Board of Relief for Pickens County: James E. Hagood.................................................................... ...." A Copy of the "Keowee Courier" of January 11, 1862, in the possession of Mrs. T.J. Mauldin, of Pickens, South Carolina, contains this Act of the General Assembly in full; also a list of those composing the Boards of Relief throughout the State. Mrs. T.J. Mauldin is a daughter of James E. Hagood. James E. Hagood provided ways and means for bringing some of the dead and wounded from the battlefields of Virginia to their homes in Pickens County and aided the widows and families of Confederate soldiers in every way possible. Sydney Bruce, son of J. McD. Bruce and Lucie (Hagood) Bruce, was born at Pickens, South Carolina, March 6, 1895. His mother is a daughter of James E. Hagood and Esther (Robinson) Hagood. His father is a son of Sydney P. Bruce and Emily (Alexander) Bruce. Sydney Bruce received his education in the schools of Pickens and at Davidson College, North Carolina. He has the distinction of being one of the youngest graduates of Davidson. He was graduated in 1914, at the age of nineteen, with the Degree of BS> He has the added distinction of having served as Assistant State Bank Examiner of South Carolina when he had barely reached his majority. He volunteered, at the age of twenty-three for World War Service in the united States Army. He registered at Walhalla, South Carolina. He enlisted at Fort Moultrie, South Carolina, on June 1, 1918, entering the Coast Artillery the day he enlisted. His assignment was 10th Company, Fort Moultrie. He received training at Fort Moultrie, South Carolina, and at Fort Monroe, Virginia. It was said of Sydney Bruce that however menial or humble the task assigned to him in the routine of military training, he invariably performed it as though it were the most pleasant duty that could have been assigned to him. Doubtless it was this superior trait that helped to win promotion for him. His promotions came in rapid succession - first to Corporal, next to Sergeant, then to Second Lieutenant. He was honorably discharged at Fort Monroe, Virginia, December 23, 1918. After being discharged, he returned to his home at Pickens, South Carolina, where he still resides. He is Cashier of the commercial Bank at Easley, South Carolin, a town eight miles from Pickens. Sydney Bruce has not severed all connection with the united States Army, as he still Second Lieutenant in the C.A.O.R.C. He is a member of the American Legion at Walhalla, South Carolina".
