JACOB BRUNNER - BK 391 OBITUARY

Jacob Brunner, son of Ulrich and Mary Brunner, was born in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio, July 30, 1838, and lived there until fourteen years of age, then moved to DeKalb County, Indiana, on a farm tow miles north of this place, of which he has lived since. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Elizabeth Reese in January, 1862. To this union two sons and three daughters were born, J.Martin, Melvin H., Etta E., and Ada, Addie, all of which preceded their parents in the world beyond. After the loss of his children Father Brunner laid his wife away and without a member of the family left, began life alone once more. Father and Mother Brunner were consistent Christians for over fifty years, always attending and supporting the church of he neighborhood. He also had an active part in the building of three church houses on this place. He was a generous and benevolent hearted, always ready to help the needy. After the affliction of nearly twelve years, on the 27th day of June at the age of 80 years, 10 months, and 27 days, he quietly and peacefully slipped away to the gates of other -wheres, to be with his Christ. He leaves to mourn their loss, one brother, two sisters, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, also a number of friends. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the council of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinner, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth He meditate day and night. PS. 1:1-2.

Grandma Mary B. Gould's Grandfather. Etta Elnora Brunner Robinett's father.

JOSEPH ROBINETT. (BK 426) The year 1919 marks the seventieth anniversary of the residence of the Robinett family in Steuben County. As a family they have been distinctive not only for their long residence but by very unusual ability and other substantial qualities. They have been large land owners, have built up several extensive tracts from wilderness conditions and many of them are still tillers of the soil and recognized as splendid citizens of their community. The first generation to settle here were Samual (BK 413) and Julia (McDonald) (BK 414) Robinett. The former was born in 1802 and died May 3, 1893. The latter was born in 1800 and died September 9, 1888. When they came to Richland Township in 1849 they acquired 233 acres of land, and there lived the rest of their lives as farmers. Joseph Robinett was born on the old homestead of his father March 14, 1863, and as a boy attended the local public schools. In 1894 he bought his present farm of 110 acres in Richland Township. He still lives there and has done much to improve it with good buildings. He now rents out his land and is practically retired. In politics Mr. Robinett is a Democrat. January 1, 1887, he married Miss. Etta E. Brunner (BK 400) of Troy Township, DeKalb County. She died in 1901, the mother of three children. Ethel (BK 437) the older, was educated in the public schools and is the wife of Galon Campbell, and had five children, only two of whom (Mary Jeanette Campbell Looney & Hattie Irene Campbell Pratter) is living. The three deceased were named, Helen, Clifton Dale, and Joseph. Mary B. (BK 438), the second daughter of Mr. Robinett, is a graduate of the Edon High School in Ohio, and the teacher's training course at the Tri-State College, after which she taught school, and then attended business college at Fort Wayne, and during the period of the war has been a typewriter in Government offices at Washington. (From page 9 of the Gould Book) Etta's sister, Ada (Brunner) Munn (BK ?), died giving child birth, so Etta and Joe, took her little son (Jake Munn) to raise. In 1901, March 21, Etta died of complications from childbirth. Her little son preceded her in death, March 8. Joe was left with two little daughters and Jake. Jennie (Robinett) Kohl, his sister, came to stay with them for a while to help with the children and the house; (told to us by Erma (Robinett) Burch.) Joe then married Sarah Hattie Somerlot, of Angola, Indiana, January 8, 1903; to this union was born to them Sevilla in 1906. A big year for them! They also built the barn that year. (From page 12 again)In 1903 Mr. Robinett married Miss Sarah Somerlot (BK 440). They have a daughter, Sevilla Irene (BK 441), who graduated from the eight grade in 1919. Mr. Robinett has been a member of the Liberal United Brethren Church since he was twenty years of age and has been a trustee of the church for over ten years and was treasurer when the new church was built in Troy Township of DeKalb County. His first wife was a member of the same church and joined it when a little girl. Their daughter Mary was the youngest child ever formally admitted as member of the church, being only nine years old at the time. The present Mrs. Robinett is also a member of this church. (From page 9 and 10 of the Gould Book) In 1925, he and Sarah moved to Edon, Ohio, where he was a custodian at the school for a number of years. He rented the farm out to Aunt Ethel and Uncle Galon, they were there until the late 1920's. Then he rented the farm to Kenneth Noragon. And shortly after he sold the farm to Elson Buell. Kenneth remained on the farm for three to six months, then Elson moved there with part of his family, and left Edgar,(Mr. Pop Buell), with his new wife, Mattie Lorene, at the old Buell homestead. (When Forrest Buell married in the 40's he told his father, Elson, "You moved to let Edgar have the other house, now move and let me have this one!" This is how Forrest got Elson's house.) Sarah Hattie, died in Edon in 1930. In 1933, Joe married Melissa (nee: Shaffer) Allmong Hissong (She is Florence Eyster's mother's sister.) She was the only Grandma that most of Grandpa Joe's Grandchildren ever knew. Joe died in 1946. He is buried in the Edon Cemetery, beside his wives, Etta, Sarah and the baby. Melissa died in 1956, and is buried beside her first husband in Bethel Cemetery, she had five children by Charles Allmong.

ETTA ELNORA BRUNNER 1862 - 1901

In loving remembrance of Etta E. Brunner born October 30, 1862, in Troy township, DeKalb county, Ind., died at her home in Richland township, Steuben county, Ind., March 21, 1901, aged 38 years, 4 months and 21 days. She was united in marriage to Joseph Robinett, January 1, 1887. To them were born three children. Ethel A., Mary B., and an infant son who preceded her to the Glory World, March 8. She became a member of the U.B. Church when but 14 years old and continued a faithful worker and consistent Christian until her death. She leaves a husband, two children, father, mother, one brother, and a host of friends to mourn their loss. A precious one from us is gone, A voice we loved is stilled, A place is vacant in our house, Which never can be filled, God in his wisdom has recalled The boon His love had given, And though the body moulders here, The soul is safe in Heaven.

Joseph Robinett and family thank their friends and neighbors who kindly assisted them during the sickness and burial of their beloved wife and mother.

General Notes for Child Ethel A. Robinett

[bobspu.ged]

ETHEL A. ROBINETT (BK 437), was born in 1888, in Richland Township, Steuben County, Indiana to Joseph and Etta Elnora (Brunner) Robinett. She was only 13 years old when her mother died. She suffered a lot of heartache for a little girl. Her Great-grandmother, Margaret (Gausage) Reese, died in 1899. Her mother died in 1901, and her Grandmother, Mary Elizabeth (Reese) Brunner, died in 1902. Plus, all of Jacob and Mary E. Brunner's children, (Ethel's Aunts and Uncles,- 2 boys and 2 girls) died between 1890 and 1902. This happened to Ethel's younger sister Mary also, but she was too little to understand. Ethel went to school at Bethel. Since the school only went through the 8th grade, she continued to attend school and went through the 8th grade a couple of times, because she wanted more education. He father thought that was enough education for a girl at that time, but by the time Mary and Sevilla finished the 8th grade he had changed his mind. They were allowed to go on to high school and even attended college. Ethel married Galon Campbell, of DeKalb Co., Ind., October 21, 1908, they made their home in and near Butler, and Auburn, Indiana. He farmed there and hired out his team. Their daughter Jenette was born in 1917 while they were there. Soon after she was born they went to live with Grandpa Brunner and took care of him. He had been in failing health since about 1907, and it's no wonder since he had lost his entire family in about 12 years. In 1918, Ethel and Galon moved to Chase, Michigan, near Reed city. They liked it there in that country, but Uncle Galon said, "due to the weather, I had two crop failures, and the next year I had a fine crop, and could not even give it away." I guess people just didn't have any money or they wouldn't pay any money for the produce. So in 1925 they moved back to Indiana on Grandpa Robinett's farm that he had been renting since moving to Edon, Ohio. (Sometime during these moves, Ethel and Galon moved to South Bend, Indiana, where he got a job working at Studebaker - the car manufacturer. They didn't stay there very long, I think he got laid off.) Jenette was to go to Bethel School that year but the day before Labor Day the school burned down, so she had to go to school at Alvarado, up near Metz, Indiana. In 1926, Hattie was born on the same farm her mother, Mary and Sevilla were born. In 1932, Galon and his family moved back to Michigan, this time near Tekonsha and Girard, on the Kingston Farm. At this place Jenette graduated from high school, and moved to town and went to work, there she met and married Myron Knight. World War II came along and Myron entered the Army and Jenette joined the Waves. It was at the Kingston Farm, that Mary's children, Everett and Ethel Mae started their summer visits with them. In 1935, while at this place Galon had his bad wreck. He, Ethel and Hattie were on their way back to Indiana, to the Eddy Cemetery, when they had a near head-on collision. They were all hurt and taken to Angola Hospital. Ethel had bruises and internal injuries. Galon, suffered bruises and a compound fracture to his upper arm, the bone going through the skin. They had to put a silver plate in his arm which he never had removed. Hattie was severely hurt, she was thrown through the car window. She was unconscious for several days and in the hospital for several weeks. She suffered head injuries and they did not expect her to live. But she did and was fine and now like most of us had passed the big "50"!!! Later on that year they left the Kingston Farm "just down the road a piece," two or three miles to the Bell Farm. At this place Joe and Bob started their visits, a habit Bob kept up for a number of years. He loved being up there, helping on the farm, and he and Hattie going frog hunting, fishing, picking berries and going into town to the general store, and watching the movies. At that time they had free movies at the general store, so they would shop, and watch the movie. This is one of the best memories of his life. In 1939, Campbells left the Bell Farm and moved up north of Marshall, Mich. on the Wheeler Farm. (This is where Bob spent the largest portion of his time with them.) In 1949 Ethel and Galon bought a farm near Quincy, Mich. This was to be Galon's last move, they lived there until Uncle Galon died in January 1959. While living at Quincy their Grandchildren were born (Richy and Mary Dessa). They were the joy of Ethel's life! How she did love those kids!!! Ethel sold the farm in 1959 and moved in with Jenette and her second husband, Darill Looney. I think at this time they lived at St. Claire Shores, near Detroit. They made several moves while she lived with them. From St. Claire Shores they moved to Pontiac, and from there to Iron River, Mich. in the Upper Peninsula. Every year she would come down to visit with her sister Mary. She usually visits in June. She would also visit Mary's children, and how we all looked forward to her visits. She would come out to our home and what a good time we would have talking and playing anagrams. She was one Super person. She made her last visit down here in 1972. In 1973 her health started to fail. She was in the hospital, then in the Iron County Medical Facility, and died there February 15, 1974. She is buried beside her husband and their three little babies who died in infancy in the Eddy Cemetery, in DeKalb Co., Ind. Some of her hobbies were playing scrabble, (She was great at it!), cooking and sewing. She belonged to a ladies club from the Presbyterian Church, which she attended. She also enjoyed writing cards to Mary.(She could get a whole letter on one card!!) Galon Campbell was born January 15, 1886 to George and Hattie (Wise) Campbell. He was the oldest of four children and was 9 years old when his father died. His mother, Hattie, was a school teacher.

"AUNT ETHEL" WAS BORN IN THE LOG CABIN JUST BEFORE THE NEW HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1893. SHE WAS 13 YEARS OLD WHEN HER MOTHER DIED IN 1901.

MARY B ROBINETT BK 438

Mary B Robinett, the daughter of Joseph and Etta Elnora (Brunner) Robinett, was born July 28, 1898, in Richland Township, Steuben County, Indiana. She was born in the new house that her father had finished in 1896 to replace the log cabin. Her mother died before she was three years old. She lived with her father and sister, Ethel A Robinett and cousin Jake Munn. Her father remarried in 1903. She was raised by her step-mother, Sarah Hattie Somerlott, who she called "Mama". She said, "Mama was a stylish lady, and liked to entertain." In 1906, a little sister, Sevilla Irene Robinett, was born. Mary went to school at Bethel along with her little friend, Florence Eyster. They have been friends since they were three years old and have remained such 'till the end of her life. The Bethel School was a one room school through the 8th grade. After Bethel Mary and Florence went to Edon High School. They drove a horse and buggy. Mary's dad furnished the horse and buggy and Florence's father paid for the storage and feed for the horses while they were in school. After high school, Mary attended Tri-State University to prepare herself to be a school teacher. She taught three years in three different schools. One year she taught at Bethel and had her younger sister, Sevilla, Erma Robinett and Ruth Eyster (Florence's younger sister) as some of her pupils. Another year, she taught at Paige, near Metz, Indiana. While she worked at Paige she stayed the week at someone's home and only came home for the weekend. The story is told that Grandpa sent her boyfriend, Alfred Tingler, after her on Friday nights. It is not known where the third school was located. After these three years, Mary went to Fort Wayne Business College. She then went to work in Washington, D.C., as a secretary. While there she met George William Gould. She then came back to Indiana and on June 29, 1920 she and George were married in Richmond, Indiana. George was working in Dayton, Ohio. He told her that they should meet halfway between these two places to be married. She laughs and says, "There was no halfway about it, as I went MOST of the way!!!" George was a Photographer by trade. He was born in Smithton, Pennsylvania, in August 17, 1892, the son of a German Immigrant. Mary and George lived in Dayton, Ohio, for a short while and then moved to Erie, Pa. Everett J Gould was born in 1921 while they were in Erie. In 1922 they moved to Colby, Kansas, where they bought a studio. Mary says, "That was quite an experience...taking that trip. All the roads were dirt and about one lane wide." I guess he had built-in radar, because Mary said he didn't even have a map. She was embarrassed about their load. "We had our car loaded down. But that didn't bother Daddy any. He was really excited about the trip." While in Colby, Ethel Mae was born in 1923 and Joseph William was born in 1928. In 1929 they moved back to Indiana to Grandpa's farm (where Ethel and Galon Campbell were living) and stayed with them for a short time until George found employment in Detroit, Michigan. There in 1930 Robert A was born. In that same year the family moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana. They lived there until 1931 when they moved to Nappanee, Indiana. He opened a studio in town and later moved it to their home. Paul G was born there in 1936 and Glen A in 1938. They lived there until 1946. Everett, Ethel Mae and Joe graduated from Nappanee High School. Everett joined the Army during World War II. Ethel Mae went to college and Joe entered the Army in 1946 after he graduated from high school. George and Mary bought a home in Elkhart, Indiana, at 215 S 3rd Street. There they had a studio in their home. George died in 1950, and after Paul got married in 1963, Mary lived there alone until she died on December 29, 1985. Mary was a devout Christian all her life, never missing church until she suffered a stroke in 1976. Then if the weather was extremely bad, she would miss church. It was very difficult for her to get around because she was partially paralyzed on her right side. She learned to write with her left hand when she was 76 years old. Since her death her home has been sold and torn down. Mary had a lot of hobbies. She loved to sew. She did a lot of sewing for the missionaries and every one of her six children, 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. (I think she made a quilt for every one of them.) She enjoyed playing Scrabble, watching TV, knitting, crocheting, reading (especially her Bible) cooking, and growing house plants. She tried to read the Bible through once each year. She made the best pies I have ever eaten and grew plants of all kinds in every room of her home.
