His 3 other brothers were executed following Robert's defeats at Methven & Dairy. A fearless commander, he aided his brother during his guerilla-style campaign of raids on English held castles. By mid-1308 Edward had overrun Galloway, while his brother had control of much of the north. He failed in his attempt to take Stirling in 1313 & made a truce with Philip de Mowbray which made Bannockburn inevitable. Invited to Ireland, where he had grown up, in 1315 by the king of Tyrone he led an army in a difficult campaign for a year.
