Lewis was the illegitimate son of Mary Ranns & Joseph Bavis. According to the Mormon microfiche Do216, he married Maria Spink on November 6, 1830 in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.
Lewis enlisted in the 94th regiment of Foot (Connaught Rangers) in August 27, 1831, Regimental # 790 & was paid a bounty of 5 pounds. He stated that he was a labourer and unmarried at the time and signed his papers with a cross. He was posted to the Reserve Battalion at Sheerness on September 22, 1831. From October toDecember 1831 he remained in Sheerness and spent three days in hospital (23 - 25 Oct.) In November 1834 the regiment moved to Spike Island Cork, Eire; on June 1, 1835 to Fermoy County Cork and on August 17, 1835 to Limerick. A marginal note on Lewis's service record showed that he married on February 16, 1836. The name of his wife is Mary Ann Buchanan and I can only presume that Maria Spink died. May 26, 1836 to Templemore, Tipperary and in October 1836 to Birr County, Offaly ; in September 1837 to Dublin; in 1838 to Cork. June 12 ,1838 to Liverpool then to Brompton Barracks, Chatham. February 21, 1840 shows Lewis in India. December 18, 1841 the regiment marched from Cannanpore to Trichinopoli arriving January 19, 1842. They remained in garrison duty at Fort George until January 1845. Lewis then went to Moulmein, Burma for 9 months. Returning to Madras they remained there until March 1847, when they embarked on a sailing ship for Cannanpore. There they remained until December 1853. In March 1853 they returned to Madras where, on February 10, 1854 the battalion was ordered back to England. Lewis and 342 other ranks volunteered to stay on and on February 10, 1854 he was formally transferred to the 64th regiment of Foot, (Prince of Wales North Stafford regiment). Regimental # 3262. On October 31, 1855 in Belgaum, he was judged unfit for further service. after 24 years 69 days of service. His discharge read " This soldier has served 24 years 69 days, 14 yrs & 10 months in India & 9 months in Moulein, Burma. He is aged and debilitated and quite unfit for active duty in consequence of which he is recommended for discharge. Disability has not been aggravated by service". He was awarded the Silver medal and a gratuity of 5 pounds for long service and exemplary conduct. His final discharge was from Chatham on July 1, 1856. He was approved for pension July 1, 1856. Mary Ann died of consumption in Cavenham, Suffolk in 1856. Lewis then remarried to a much younger lady. On his marriage certificate he was shown as a Chelsea pensioner. He left his youngest daughter Lydia Ida (my grandmother) with his married sister who was recorded in the 1861 census. On her baptismal certificate in Tuddenham dated August 10, 1862 it was stated that her parents were Lewis and Mary (Mormon microfilm #952204.) Pensioner'srecords show that he went to Limerick immediately after Mary Ann's death and then returned to England. The military records show that he died February 23, 1884 in Minster, Kent. He is also shown on Lydia's marriage certificate, December 7, 1887, as "deceased". There remains only one question, was he a bigamist?

The Indian Mutiny occurred in 1857-58. The 64th regiment of Foot were engaged in quelling this mutiny. After retiring from the army Charles became Canteen Steward at the Green Howards Barracks, The Castle, Richmond, North Yorkshire.

Lydia was born in Belgaum, India and returned with her father Lewis to Tuddenham, Cambs. in July 1856. She was baptized in Tuddenham, Cambs, August 10, 1862, while living with her aunt Mary Ann Grimwood (Ranns). Her daughter Bertha was illegitimate and the birth certificate shows Lydia as a domestic servant from Tuddenham, Cambs. The birth was registered in Mildenhall, Suffolk. Her son Edward Bruce also illegitimate was born (2:30 a.m. on December 5, 1882), in the Union Workhouse, Epsom, Surrey. On the birth certificate she was shown as a domestic servant. She was discharged from the Workhouse on March 23, 1883 when her age was recorded as 28. On December 7, 1887 she married Edward John Hobbs at Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk. Her address at the time is shown as 1 Crown Court, Southgate, St. Bury St. Edmunds and her age as 30. She accompanied her husband to Malta and then to Ceylon where she had a daughter Olive Flora Helen. Both Bertha & Bruce remained in England with the Grimwoods during this time. Bertha always thought that the Grimwoods were her grand parents. Upon her return from Ceylon, Bertha & Bruce joined the family, now living in Paddington, London. After her death in 1913, her son Francis Walter James (my father), went to live with his sister Bertha now married to Walter Wallis. He stayed with them until joining the army in WW1 in 1914.
