General Notes (Husband)

Richard Birdine was a contributor to the Evangelical Luther anChurch(Hebron) in the Robinson River area when they were raising fundsin1733. Probably Richard Birdine (or Burdyne)was not a German.Thisraises the question as to why he made a contribution. Most likely, hehad married a German woman.

This contribution of Richard Burdyne is the earliest known recordofhim in this area. He had no land patent. Robert Tanner deeded him212acres on 12 Mar 1738. In the 1739 tithe list, Richard Burdyne was locatedin the sequence of Zacharias Fleshman, Peter Fleshman, Richard Birdine, John Wilhide, Michael Claur, . . .

Richard Tanner (Gerber) was a German who had land patents in 1728 and 1735 in the vicinity of the individuals named above. Robert Tanner testified in 1720 that he came to Virginia with his wife, Mary, andfive children, Christopher, Christianna, Katherine, MaryandParva (Barbara).

Richard Burdyne was nominated as executor in the will ofHenryFrederick Phierpack (Beyerback) but Burdyne did not serve.

Richard Burdyne's will, written 22 July 1761, named his wife as Catherine.

In a 1739 Tithe List of Hebron Church: In John Mickell's Precinct, which was north of the Robinson River, there were: Tobias Wilhite,JohnStolts, Frederick Bumgarner, Christopher Moyers, Peter Weaver,Mitchell(Michael) Wilhite, George Woods (Utz), Pals Plunkabeaner(BalthasarBlankenbaker), Ludwick Pfisher (Lewis Fisher), MathiasPlankabeaner(Matthias Blankenbaker), Nicholas Pluncabeaner(Blankenbaker), GeorgeShively (Sheible), Conrat Pater (?), JacobBroil (Broyles), ZachariasFlefhman (Cyraicus Fleshman), RichardBirdine (Burdyne), John Wilhide(Willheit), Michael Claur (Clore),David Ouell Yowell), John Thomas,Henry Sluter (Slucter), JohnZimmerman, John Full (John Paul Vogt),Christian Clemon, and JacobManfpoil (Manspiel). Again several Englishnames occurred among thesenames.

General Notes for Child Samuel Burdine

Land Deeds: Samuel and Mary lived in Amelia county, Virginia prior to their move to Wilkes county, North Carolina from 1776 to 1779. This land deeded to Thomas Marshal, Jr. was land Sauel inherited from his father's Will of 1761. On 9 November 1784, Samuel Burdine: 100 acres in Wilkes county, North Carolina beginning at William Kilby's line, on waters of Meadow Branch, adjoining Jonathan Wall. Also on 29 September 1787, Samuel Burdine sells to Samuel Carter 100 acres of land on Meadow Branch adjacent to William Kilby and Jonathan Wall, Witnessed by Adam Kilby. Tax List: Samuel and Nathaniel Burdine and Abraham and William Eddins, Joseph Tanner, William and Adam Kilby are listed in the 1782 Tax Rolls in Wilkes County, North Carolina. They are found on Jury Duty records in 1781 through 1787. From the land deeds and tax list it can be determined that Samuel left Virginia between 1780 and 1781. then, after 1787, he was found in Newberry County, South Carolina. South Carolina: No other records on Samuel until the 1790 Census of Newberry County, South Carolina. CENSUS: 1790 Federal Census, 96 District, Newberry County, SC; FIRST CENSUS OF THE UNITED STATES 1790 SOUTH CAROLINA. 2 males under 16 and 2 females. CENSUS: 1800 Pendleton District, South Carolina; Samuel Burdine, Head of Household, One male 45 & over; One male age 16-26; and one female age 26-45. Here (Newberry) he purchased 200 acres on Kings Creek at Old Saluda Road on 31 July 1792 and sold half of it on 9 January 1793. He later moved his family to Pickens County, South Carolina, where on the date of 12 February 1796 he purchased 995 acres on Georges Creek. He gave Deed of Gift to son Abraham of 370 acres on Georges Creek Pendleton District, South Carolina 12 October 1818. Samuel is not found in the 1820 Census. He died sometime between 1818 and 1820 in Georges Creek, Pickens County, South Carolina. The Bishop, Francis Asbury, made several entries in his Journal about his visits to Samuel Burdine's home. Many Family Histories list Samuel as Rev. Samuel Burdine. There has been no indication that this is correct. In a letter from Mary Copeland, she makes comment that it is evident he was not. The descendants of Samuel are one of the most researched and well documented lines of all of Richard and Catherine Burdine's children. This is due largely in part to James Wade Emison with the help of Mary Copeland and family descendants who worked with him. Carol Ann Burdine states, "The search for my husband's connection to the Burdines of Virginia, found many who were descended from Samuel. They granted me the results of their research for this book. Samuel Burdine's place of birth is listed as Orange Co., VA, by Herman Geschwind, genealogist. (Old Pendleton Database)
