Elias Prioleau succeeded his father as pastor at Pons, Fra nce, which he left with much of his congregation when the c hurch was destroyed on 15 April, 1686. After making their w ay to England, they emigrated to Carolina , settled on th e Black River, and Elias Prioleau became pastor of the firs t Huguenot church in Charleston.

The family of Priuli or Priolo, from which the Prioleaus o f France were descended was one of the ancient ducal house s of Venice. Prior to 1000 it flourished in the Kingdom o f Hungary, but in 1097 some of its members settled in Venic e, where they took rank with the most distinguished and pow erful nobility.
