Individual note: An article by Leta Griffith Grubb Uncle Tillus Burgett had a mare which stood up well on ice. When the dirt roads were icy it was he who transported his own children plus their cousins, Let and Elizabeth Griffith, to Clark Township #3 schoolhouse a mile and a half to the northeast of their homes on Griffith road. When the weather was good, they walked. One morning Leta and Lena Burgett were walking alone to the one room school when a man in a buggy stopped and offered them a ride. Lena accepted but Leta, remembering her parent's instructions, refused. She ran along screaming behind the buggy until the man stopped and let Lena out.
Uncle Tillus was a large heavy man. One summer he fell ill with a bowel obstruction. His son, Paul, said they moved the dining room table into the living room where Uncle Tillus had his surgery. It was done in the house south of Grandpa's (Presley Griffith). where Aunt Cora and Uncle Tillus lived. Paul said that Floyd Burgett held the Rayo lamp at Uncle Tillus' head. The Rayo lamps had a round wick and gave more light than an ordinary lamp. Paul said it was his dad's fault...he would not go to a doctor for his stomach cramps but kept taking linament Burgetts had a big long Pathfinder 8 car. The top would lay back. Paul told us that they laid back the top and made a bed in the car for his dad. Paul, seventeen years old, drove him to St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis. Aunt Cora stayed in the Indianapolis home of her "Aunt Sis", Eliza Jane Griffith Morris in oredr to visit her husband in the hospital. He died there on June 20, 1920 at the age of fifty. In December of the same year, Aunt Mabel Griffith McClain died of complications from the flu. It was a very sad Christmas at Grandma and Grandpa's house that year. BIO: MRS. CORA BURGETT DIES EARLY MONDAY Funeral Thursday at Church in Rocklane
Greenwood, April 8--Mrs. Cora A. Griffith Burgett, age 75, widow of Tillus A. Burgett, died at 3:15 o'clock Monday at the home of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Hubert Burgett, southeast of Greenwood. She had been in failing health for some time and seriously ill for the past two weeks. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Rocklane Christian church. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the home of Mrs. Hubert Burgett after 6 o'clock Tuesday evening and are invited to attend the services. Mrs. Burgett was born in Clark township November 6, 1870, the daughter of Presley R. and Susan M. Parmer Griffith, and lived her entire life in the vicinity where she died. In 1899, she was united in marriage to Tillus A. Burgett, who preceded her in death in 1920. Of the five children born to this union, four are living. They are Mrs. Lena Patterson of Shelbyville; Paul Burgett of Rocklane; Mrs. Mary Esther Morrical of Columbus, Ohio; and Glenn Burgett, who is with the U.S. Army in China. A son, Hubert Burgett, died a few years ago. Several grandchildren also survive. The son, Paul Burgett, is a patient in Methodist Hospital following an appendectomy.
