General Notes (Husband)



 Walter Avery Acker was born in the Shady Grove community ofAndersonCounty, South Carolina, across from Shady Grove BaptistChurch.  Hewas a lifelong farmer as was his father.  Walt farmedupward to 1100acres at one time where he grew soybeans, wheat, oats,barley, corn,potatoes and peas.  He was a leader in the establishmentof theFriendship Fire Department, and a member of Shady Grove BaptistChurchwhere he helped in the foundation construction of thepresentsanctuary(1999).  Walt always gave of his resources andprovided helpto his neighbors throughout his life.  He was a veryactiveindividual, a master delegator and did not want to have idletime.  Heis buried at Shady Grove Baptist Church. He and his wife Virginia were married 64 years. Walt was born in the Shady Grove community, in fact across fromthecurrent ball field.  His family has deep roots in thiscommunitydating back to the early 1820's. He could remember when "Shady Grove" had trees out in front of theoldchurch. He helped in the initial construction of the present church building. Walt accepted Christ in 1930.  He has been a pillar of bothFriendshipand Shady Grove communities, giving of his own resources,raisingmoney to help his neighbors and was always looking out for theelderlyand those in need. Walt was always ready to spin a story or tale.  You could alwaystellif he was stretching a tale by the twinkle in his eyes. He was a leader in establishing the Friendship Fire Department andwasthe chief for 20 years.  He always expected the best of himself and those whoworkedwith him. Walt was a master at delegation in getting things done - never anidlewaste of time was his motto. He is truly missed, and remembered for what he gave to all of us He is buried in Shady Grove Baptist Cemetery, Belton, S.C..
