General Notes for Child Thomas K.T Western Rear Admiral

Knight Commander Royal Portugese order of Tower & Sword. The Tattingstone Estate was bequeathed to him by his father's first cousin Thomas White in 1808.

Of Tattingstone Place Co. Suffolk & Aldham Co. Essex

Since the Rear Admiral never lived at Felix Hall, let alone Rivenhall - although he is credited with having spent much of his early childhood at Rivenhall Place, it seems highly probable that he is buried at Aldham, - presumably Essex where the Church, 1855 is built out of material from an older building. (We have visited Aldham Suffolk, but the church has no Western memorial. The Aldham church Burial register of 1814 should give his age at death, We know that he was not buried here at Rivenhall; only "Old" Thomas & Maximilian amongst his ancestry have this distinction.

We see no reason to dispute December 1814 as the Rear Admiral's time of death. See Burke for 1847. we believe that his portrait must have been painted between the time of Trafalgar and 1814 on grounds of promotion and age. *** The portrait, artist unknown, came into the possession of Rivenhall Parochial Church Council early in the second world war. On Sunday October 8th 1939 a report was given to the P.C.C. on a "recent visit of Miss Western, of 19 Courtfield Road London S.W.7. She asked that the portrait of Admiral Western should be hung in the (Church) Hall as soon as possible, since it would be damaged by children if left in its present position, she

would pay the bill". Prior to the sale of this hall in June 1974, the portrait was photographed and moved to Rivenhall Place. It was cleaned by a Colchester firm on the instructions of MR David Stapleton, who then owned the "Place" and was then being hung on the main staircase,- where it still is (March 1976) The present owner of Rivenhall Place is Mr Nicholas Callingham-Wilkes.

*** His portrait here refers to that at Rivenhall Place and not to the one exhibited in the Constable Exhibition at the Tate Gallery in the Spring of 1976. This Rivenhall canvass stands 9 feet high by 5' - 6'" approx. The Rear Admiral, slightly larger that life-size stands on the fore-shore in his dress uniform, his right hand upon a large anchor, his left hand holding his sword. He appears to be a man of over sixty years of age, though by no means senile. We possess a photo of a portrait by F. Grant R.A. of Thomas Burch Western, 1864 (aged 68 yrs) The Admiral in his portrait, looks younger than the son in his!

On a Western Pedigree obtained from Mrs Joan Western Cody, of Ontario, Canada, April 1975, we discovered an extra item of information not apparent on our copies of the family tree. The Admiral is said to have been born in 1761; this would make him about 33 yrs. on his wedding day; only 53 at death. On the basis of this reasoning we would reckon, considering the comment made about Western appearing to be in his sixties, we must conclude that the date of our portrait is nearer 1814 than 1810.

General Notes for Child John Western Lieut. R.N.

Lieut H.M. Frigate "SYREN" killed during naval battle against the French. Memorial to him in Dort.

John WESTERN - b.22 Jun 1770 d.21 Mar 1793

Sunday 24th March, 1793,

This day the body of Lieut. Western was carried to Dort and interred in that garrison with military honours, at the particular requisition of HRH the Duke of York. A detachment of the Guards fired 3 vollies over his grace. This gallant young officer merits at once the regret and admiration of his country. He commanded three gunboats carrying one 12 pounder and 16 men each; and a very few days before he was killed performed an action which for its gallantry, merits to be particularly recorded.

On the night of the 15th, it being quite calm and very foggy, he rowed over close to the French forts 5 in number and opended upon them a very brisk fire from his 3 gunboats. The enemy ignorant of his force, and from the quickness of his fire supossing it to be much greater than it was, deserted their batteries and left their cannon behind them.

The Governor of Wilhamstadt, the brace Boetzhaar, was surprised at the firing , as he did not know that any assistance was so near him.Next day Lieut. Western went to Williamstadt, where he received. the hearty thanks of the Governor and had the pleasure to see the Dutch soldiers bringing the cannon from the batteries which the French had deserted in consequence of his attack.

It is universally allowed" that this officer with his gunboats occasioned the French to raise the siege of Williamstadt so precipitately. He was only in the 23rd year of his age and was made Lieut in 1790.

He was a young man of most amiable dispositions and much esteemed by all who new him.

Lieut. Western was killed by a musket shot off the Moerdyk. When the enemy raised the siege of Williamstadt they did not, quit the neighbouring country, they had detachments along the shore by the Moerdyk, which they occupied occasionally. It was by the fire of one of the detachments off a place called the Nordcharvy (?) near the entrance of the Klundert Canal that Lieut. Western lost his life. The Governor of Williamstadt did justice to the assistance he derived fron poor Western's gallant exertions and the tears which fell over his grave from the honest seamen who bore his corpse proved that he matched intrepidity and resolution with the happy faculty of concilliating the affections of those under his command.

Extracts from "Life of Sir Harry Calvert" (His 1st cousin and member of the Coldstream Guards)

COPY OF EPITAPH AT DORT HOLLAND

Within the church at Dort (or Dortrecht) was interred Lieut. John Western, R.N., in the presence of the Duke of York, the Grenadier Guards attending as firing party.

This young officer was killed at Moerdyk, March 21st 1793. Six days previously he had succeeded, while in command of 3 gunboats each containing four 12 pounders and 16 men, in compelling the French Army 5,000 strong, to abandon the seige of Willenstadt so that the garrison were enabled next morning to march out and take possesion of the French camp, guns and ammunition.

This sortie was made in the dark, the enemy being thus unable to estimate their numbers and mistaking them for a larger force.

1 UPDA 2 PLAC Connected to the East India Cpmpany

LDS Records say born 26 Apr 1775 Manager of Dublin packets in Holyhead.

EAST INDIA COMPANY was the name of several European companies that opened trade with India and the Far East in the 1600's. East India companies were private enterprises given charters by the governments of England, the Netherlands, Denmark, and France. The companies received special trading rights from their governments. The British East India Company had the longest life--nearly 260 years--and the greatest influence. It opened India and the Far East to English trade and eventually brought India into the British Empire.

Before 1600, Portugal controlled most European trade with India and the Far East. The English company was formed in 1600, and soon began competing with the Portuguese. The Dutch company was formed in 1602, the Danish company in 1616, and the French company in 1664. During the 1600's, the Dutch and English companies seized most of the Portuguese holdings and drove most of the Portuguese traders out of India. The Dutch gained control of the islands that became the Dutch East Indies (now part of Indonesia).

To protect itself, the English company made agreements with the rulers of India during the 1600's. It carried on trade without trying to acquire territory. But in the early 1700's, the Mogul Empire, which had ruled India and given it political unity for about 200 years, began to break up. Many regional states emerged, and fighting often broke out among them. The English and French companies tried to improve their positions in India by intervening in Indian politics and taking sides in local disputes. In the 1740's and 1750's, the French tried to win control of India, but the British, under Robert Clive, stopped them. French influence in India ended in the early 1800's, when the French were at war in Europe. British influence then spread quickly, without French interference.

Legislation passed by the Dutch government in 1798 caused the Dutch company, deep in debt, to disband the following year. In 1845, the Danish holdings in India were sold to the British company. The British company ruled India until the Sepoy Rebellion, a revolt led by Indian troops from 1857 to 1859. In 1858, as a result of the revolt, the British government took control of India from the East India Company.

SEPOY REBELLION, pronounced SEE poy, was a major Indian revolt against British rule in India. The rebellion began in 1857 and spread across northern and central India. Thousands of people, mainly Indians, died in the fighting. At the time of the rebellion, a British trading company called the East India Company ruled most of India. In 1858, as a result of the rebellion, the British government took permanent control of the territory from the company. The revolt ended in 1859.

The Sepoy Rebellion was begun by Indian soldiers, called sepoys, in the army of the East India Company. The sepoys became especially alarmed when the British introduced the new Enfield rifle, which used cartridges greased in a tallow containing beef and pork fat. The cartridges had to be bitten open before being loaded into rifles. But the religious beliefs of the sepoys forbade them to bite open the cartridges. The Hindu sepoys could not eat beef. Sepoys who were Muslims (followers of Islam) could not eat pork.

The rebellion broke out in the military base at Meerut after British officers imprisoned 85 sepoys for refusing to use the cartridges. On May 10, other angry sepoys freed the prisoners and killed many British officers. The rebellion spread rapidly. The sepoys captured several major cities, including Delhi, Kanpur, and Lucknow.

Many other Indians joined the sepoys. They included Indian princes and nobles whose lands had been seized by the East India Company. Other Indians who supported the sepoys resented British attitudes toward the Hindu and Muslim ways of life. They felt threatened by the attempts of British missionaries to convert India to Christianity, and by the pace of modernization.

By the summer of 1858, stronger and better-equipped British forces had defeated most of the rebels. The British government then tried to improve relations with India. It supported big landowners, guaranteed princes their existing territories, and promised never to interfere with Hindu or Muslim religions. But the rebellion greatly intensified anti-British feelings in India.
