General Notes (Wife)
[bobspu.ged]
ETHEL A. ROBINETT (BK 437), was born in 1888, in Richland Township, Steuben County, Indiana to Joseph and Etta Elnora (Brunner) Robinett. She was only 13 years old when her mother died. She suffered a lot of heartache for a little girl. Her Great-grandmother, Margaret (Gausage) Reese, died in 1899. Her mother died in 1901, and her Grandmother, Mary Elizabeth (Reese) Brunner, died in 1902. Plus, all of Jacob and Mary E. Brunner's children, (Ethel's Aunts and Uncles,- 2 boys and 2 girls) died between 1890 and 1902. This happened to Ethel's younger sister Mary also, but she was too little to understand. Ethel went to school at Bethel. Since the school only went through the 8th grade, she continued to attend school and went through the 8th grade a couple of times, because she wanted more education. He father thought that was enough education for a girl at that time, but by the time Mary and Sevilla finished the 8th grade he had changed his mind. They were allowed to go on to high school and even attended college. Ethel married Galon Campbell, of DeKalb Co., Ind., October 21, 1908, they made their home in and near Butler, and Auburn, Indiana. He farmed there and hired out his team. Their daughter Jenette was born in 1917 while they were there. Soon after she was born they went to live with Grandpa Brunner and took care of him. He had been in failing health since about 1907, and it's no wonder since he had lost his entire family in about 12 years. In 1918, Ethel and Galon moved to Chase, Michigan, near Reed city. They liked it there in that country, but Uncle Galon said, "due to the weather, I had two crop failures, and the next year I had a fine crop, and could not even give it away." I guess people just didn't have any money or they wouldn't pay any money for the produce. So in 1925 they moved back to Indiana on Grandpa Robinett's farm that he had been renting since moving to Edon, Ohio. (Sometime during these moves, Ethel and Galon moved to South Bend, Indiana, where he got a job working at Studebaker - the car manufacturer. They didn't stay there very long, I think he got laid off.) Jenette was to go to Bethel School that year but the day before Labor Day the school burned down, so she had to go to school at Alvarado, up near Metz, Indiana. In 1926, Hattie was born on the same farm her mother, Mary and Sevilla were born. In 1932, Galon and his family moved back to Michigan, this time near Tekonsha and Girard, on the Kingston Farm. At this place Jenette graduated from high school, and moved to town and went to work, there she met and married Myron Knight. World War II came along and Myron entered the Army and Jenette joined the Waves. It was at the Kingston Farm, that Mary's children, Everett and Ethel Mae started their summer visits with them. In 1935, while at this place Galon had his bad wreck. He, Ethel and Hattie were on their way back to Indiana, to the Eddy Cemetery, when they had a near head-on collision. They were all hurt and taken to Angola Hospital. Ethel had bruises and internal injuries. Galon, suffered bruises and a compound fracture to his upper arm, the bone going through the skin. They had to put a silver plate in his arm which he never had removed. Hattie was severely hurt, she was thrown through the car window. She was unconscious for several days and in the hospital for several weeks. She suffered head injuries and they did not expect her to live. But she did and was fine and now like most of us had passed the big "50"!!! Later on that year they left the Kingston Farm "just down the road a piece," two or three miles to the Bell Farm. At this place Joe and Bob started their visits, a habit Bob kept up for a number of years. He loved being up there, helping on the farm, and he and Hattie going frog hunting, fishing, picking berries and going into town to the general store, and watching the movies. At that time they had free movies at the general store, so they would shop, and watch the movie. This is one of the best memories of his life. In 1939, Campbells left the Bell Farm and moved up north of Marshall, Mich. on the Wheeler Farm. (This is where Bob spent the largest portion of his time with them.) In 1949 Ethel and Galon bought a farm near Quincy, Mich. This was to be Galon's last move, they lived there until Uncle Galon died in January 1959. While living at Quincy their Grandchildren were born (Richy and Mary Dessa). They were the joy of Ethel's life! How she did love those kids!!! Ethel sold the farm in 1959 and moved in with Jenette and her second husband, Darill Looney. I think at this time they lived at St. Claire Shores, near Detroit. They made several moves while she lived with them. From St. Claire Shores they moved to Pontiac, and from there to Iron River, Mich. in the Upper Peninsula. Every year she would come down to visit with her sister Mary. She usually visits in June. She would also visit Mary's children, and how we all looked forward to her visits. She would come out to our home and what a good time we would have talking and playing anagrams. She was one Super person. She made her last visit down here in 1972. In 1973 her health started to fail. She was in the hospital, then in the Iron County Medical Facility, and died there February 15, 1974. She is buried beside her husband and their three little babies who died in infancy in the Eddy Cemetery, in DeKalb Co., Ind. Some of her hobbies were playing scrabble, (She was great at it!), cooking and sewing. She belonged to a ladies club from the Presbyterian Church, which she attended. She also enjoyed writing cards to Mary.(She could get a whole letter on one card!!) Galon Campbell was born January 15, 1886 to George and Hattie (Wise) Campbell. He was the oldest of four children and was 9 years old when his father died. His mother, Hattie, was a school teacher.
"AUNT ETHEL" WAS BORN IN THE LOG CABIN JUST BEFORE THE NEW HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1893. SHE WAS 13 YEARS OLD WHEN HER MOTHER DIED IN 1901.
