!According to Stout, he moved to Saline Co., MO in 1818; crossed the plains in 1852 and settled on 80 acres in Santa Clara Valley, CA. Father's family found in Saline County, MO in 1830 (p. 233). James first listed in Saline County in 1840 (p. 95) near cousins Pois (Porus Dabney), Thomas B. (both sons of Dabney) and Walker H. (son of William), (p. 96, 97). 1850 census still in Saline Co. (p. 46), near cousins Philander, Brutus and Porus (p. 45, 46 - Dabney's sons). In Santa Clara County, CA in 1860 census (p. 503, dwelling #269, family #299). Birthdate supplied by Al Alderman. !First found living with family in 1860, Santa Clara, aged 20, farm laborer. (p. 503, dwelling #269, family #299). Received MA degree from Pacific Methodist College in Santa Clara. Became first President of Methodist College, Corvallis, OR, in 1865. This later became Oregon State University. Resigned 4 May 1872, due to health requirements of wife, Sarah (E.T. Reed, "Book 1, Oregon State College, 1868-1938, Chapter 1, President Finley," Corvallis, OR: Oregon State College, Orange & Black, 1938, p. 7-12 ...contains wedding picture of William and Sarah). William Asa Finley first appears on the Sonoma County, CA Great Register in 1879 as a minister, age 37, living in Santa Rosa. In 1888, he is listed as a "clerical teacher," and is registered at least through 1894. In 1892, he is described as 5'8". dark complexion, hazel eyes, and black hair. In the 1890 Business Directory of Sonoma County, he is listed as president of the Santa Rosa Ladies College. Found in Santa Rosa in census records of 1880 (ed 124, sheet 43), 1900 (ed 174, sheet 14) and 1910 (121 0157 0261). Willie C., 18 year old dau- ghter listed in 1900. In 1910, son, Ernest, age 39 is living in household along with Robert A. Latimer, 95 year old father-in-law. California Death Index file #18821 gives date of death as 19 June 1912, San Francisco, CA.

!First found living with father in Santa Clara County, CA age 18, in 1860 census (p. 503). Listed in Santa Clara township in 1880 (ed 251, sheet 18). Appeared in Sonoma County Great Registers of 1884 through 1896, a fruitgrower, living in Santa Rosa. In 1892 his physical description is given as 5'11", fair complexion, gray eyes, brown hair, scar on left cheek. In 1900 he was found in Berkeley, Alameda County (ed 398 sheet 15). On 30 December 1922, he wrote his "Memoirs of Travel, " an 8-page detailed account of the trip made by his parents together with the Rucker, Lovell and Campbell families from Saline County, MO to San Jose, CA. This Campbell family is the one for whom Campbell, CA was named (LDS film # ). Diary submitted by Alton L. Alderman, MD, Box 299, Athena, OR, 97813. Married (1) Mary Elizabeth Hicks, 20 December 1866; she died 1872, no issue. Newton and Kate moved to Sonoma County in 1882, near Santa Rosa, after birth of their two children. He was a pioneer prune grower. Moved to Berkeley in 1899; returned to Santa Clara about 1910 where he died. General Notes for Child John Pettis Finley
!Was about 7 years old when family travelled across the plains from MO to CA (brother Newton's diary). Found living with family in 1860 in Santa Clara County, age 16, farm laborer. According to memoirs written by brother Newton Gleaves Finley, John Pettis founded the Pacific Manufacturing Company in Santa Clara and later the Finley Mortuary of Portland, OR. A son, William Lovell, became a noted ornithologist and OR State Game Warden. Son, Arthur founded a line that was managing the Finley Mortuary in 1985. Their daughter, Anna, married Frank Kenney. Family information found in his bio sketch ("History of Oregon," Chicago: Pioneer Historical Publishing Co., 1922, p. 384-385). It states he remained in CA until 1887 working as a contractor and builder; established the first casket factory on the west coast.
Moved to Portland, OR and opened Oregon Casket Company; moved into undertaking business 1 December 1892. Served as coroner of Multnomah County from 1902 until 1908. He was Presbyterian and a Republican; belonged to IOOF, Ancient Order of United Workmen, Knights of Pythias, Artisans, Wood- men of the World, Knights and Ladies of Security.

!First found, age 4, in 1850 census, Saline County, MO (p. 46); in Santa Clara County, CA in 1860 (p. 503); Benton County, OR in 1880 (ed 10, sheet 22), with eldest son, Ross, born in OR; Benton County, OR in 1900 (ed 4, sheet 7). According to bio of brother, John Pettis, Hugh was still living in OR in 1922.
!Undocumented sheet sent by Oregon State Archives gives vital data also states he left California and went to Oregon at the age of twenty (1867). Attended Oregon Agricultural College, graduating in 1871 (graduating class of six--four men and two women). Became professor at OAC, and principal of preparatory dept. until 1873, when he became principal of Shedd public schools (Linn County), Oregon. In 1876 he bought a 200 acre farm on the Willamette River, about six miles northeast of Monroe, Benton Co. Had 35 acres in prunes; had grain house capable of storing his and neighbor's commodities.
