This Indenture made this thirty first day of Dec- 1 ember in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred 2 and three between William Spurgin senr and Priscilla 3 his wife of the County of Bourbon and the Commonwealth 4 of Kentucky of the one part; and James Kennedy of the 5 [top page 138] County and Commonwealth aforesaid of the other part, wit- 6 nesseth that the said William Spurgin senr, and Priscilla his wife 7 for and in consideration of the sum of Fifty pounds current 8 money of Kentucky to them in hand paid at or before the 9 sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt of which 10 is hereby acknowledged, have granted, bargained and sold 11 aliened and confirmed, and by these presents do grant, 12 bargain and sell, alien, and confirm unto the said James 13 Kennedy and to his heirs and assigns forever, all that tract or 14 parcel of land, lying and being in the County and Common 15 wealth aforesaid on the waters of Stovers fork of Licking 16 a part of Thomas Gists military survey of three thousand three hundred and eleven acres and is bounded as follows, to wit, beginning 18 at an elm, iron wood and walnut, corner to George Spur- 19 gin's one hundred acres of land on the line of said militia 20 ry survey thence with said Military line south seventy de- 21 grees west one hundred poles to two iron woods and white 22 oak corner to James Spurgins one hundred acres, thence 23 with his line south eighteen and one half degrees east, one 24 hundred and sixty poles to an ash and iron wood another 25 corner to said James's land thence north seventy degrees 26 east one hundred poles to an ash, walnut, and an iron wood 27 thence south eighteen and one half degrees east, ninety 28 three poles to a small ash and iron wood, thence north 29 seventy degrees east, eighty poles to a small elm, and 30 two ashes corner to David Spurgins one hundred acres 31 thence with this line north eighteen and one half degrees 32 west one hundred and thirteen poles to a sugar tree and 33 two buckeyes, another corner to Davids land, thence 34 south seventy degrees west eighty six poles to two sugar trees 35 and walnut corner to George Spurgins one hundred 36 acres, thence with this line north eighteen and one 37 half degrees west, one hundred and forty and three tenths 38 poles to the beginning. NOTE: There is no reference in this deed to any of the parties being related, but we know from other sources that James Kennedy married Rebecca Spurgin, sister of William Spurgin senr. Priscilla, William's wife, was the former Priscilla Robinet. The fact that William is consistently listed as William Spurgin senr indicates that there was also a William Spurgin junior. The George (lines 19 and 36), James (line 23), and David (line 31) Spurgins also look like sons of William senr and Priscilla. On 10 August 1809, James Kennedy sold 60 acres of the above 160 acre parcel to John Garner for $240, and 100 acres to Daniel Hibler for $600 (Deed Book G, pages 308-309).
