Wade Hampton came to live in Richland County after the Rev olution. His brother Richard and he had been engaged in bus iness with a certain Gray, mostly in the up-country. The re cords show large sales of provisions at the Congarees to Ge neral Sumter. Edward Hampton, another brother, while survey ing before the war, surveyed a number of tracts of land i n the fork of the Congaree and Wateree.
Colonel Wade Hampton married in 1783 Mrs. Martha Epps H owell, widow of Malachi Howell, son of Thomas and Grace How ell She was the only child of Jesse Goodwyn and his wife, M artha, daughter of Philip Raiford. She died May 22, 1784. N o children by this marriage are known. A letter dated in 17 84 in possession of Professor Yates Snowden is addressed t o Col. Wade Hampton at Greenfield, the plantation of his wi fe, below Adams' Mill Pond. Two years later, August 14, 178 6, Colonel Hampton married Harriet Flud. The census of 179 0 records Wade Hampton in Richland County as head of a fami ly, in which there were two males (including himself) ove r 16 years of age, five under 16 years, three females, an d 86 slaves. Whether there were any children of either marriage at this time cannot be ascertained.
A son, Wade, who is generally known as Col. Wade Hampton , builder of Millwood, was born in Columbia, April 21, 1791 ; and another son, Frank, was born later, if the fact tha t both left the South Carolina College in the same year, Wade in the junior class, his brother a sophomor e, indicates a similar difference in age.
Mrs. Harriet Hampton died October 31, 1794. Seven year s after this Colonel Hampton married Mary Cantey, July 18 , 1801, who survived him. Of this union several children we re born, as shown by the graves in Trinity churchyard. He d ied at the age of 83, on the 4th of February, 1835; she a t the same age on the 19th of June, 1863. One daughter surv ived, Caroline, wife of John S. Preston.
Shortly after the Revolution the state offered lands fo r sale at $10.00 for a hundred acres. Wade Hampton became t he owner of many thousands of acres He, with Thomas Taylo r and Timothy Rives, secured title in 1785 to 18,500 acre s on Gill Creek, from above Lakeview, on both sides of th e creek to the Congaree. Colonel Taylor retained part of th e land at the upper end, while Colonel Hampton became posse ssor of the balance. Several years later, the exact time not known, he built a home near Gil l Creek, about two miles below Garner's Ferry road.

Known as the "Gamecock of the Revolution," Thomas Sumter , b. Hanover County, Va., Aug. 14, 1734, d. June 1, 1832, l ed rebel guerrilla forces during the American Revolution. W hen the British won control of South Carolina in 1780, he , Francis Marion, and other partisan fighters kept the rebe l cause alive south of Virginia until the victory at Yorkto wn a year later. After the war he represented South Carolin a as a U.S. congressman (1789-93, 1797-1801) and senator (1 801-09). Fort Sumter in Charleston was named in his honor.

Ely Kershaw came to Charleston with his brothers Joseph an d William about 1750. He served with Colonel William Thomso n's Rangers and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. H e was exiled by the British after the surrender of Charlest on, and died en route to Bermuda.
