Notes for ELBRIDGE GERRY ADAMS:: Jacksonville Beaches, Florida. The Leader. Thursday, February 271 1975. Gerry Adams, one of Beaches' most colorful citizens. dies a t 71. by Tom Aftee "Sixty eight years after he arrived at the Beaches Gerry Ad ams died peacefully in his sleep this past week. Beach pion eers who knew him will tell you that it was probably one of the calmer events in his existance . Between arrival and departure his accomplishments were mo re than enough for several men.
Educated at Mercersburg Academy, University of Florida a nd the Cornell University of Hotel Administration, he bega n his career by signing on as a cabin boy with the United States Line, sailing between Amer ica and Germany for two years during the 1920's.
Leaving the sea, he entered a hotel management internshi p at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. an interlu de he fondly remembered for the opportunity it gave him to participate in the planning an d staging of the Welcome Home Banquet for Charles Lindburgh . Returning to the Beaches, he was associated with the Atla ntic Beach Hotel, which his family had built in 1925. Whil e with the Hotel he erected the first electric lines in th e community so that the homes could be served by the hotel' s generator, the only one at the Beach at that time. Later he and his brother, Bil l built the Atlantic Beach fishing pier, remnants of whic h still stand, despite the onslaught of several hurricanes.
At another point during his activity-filled life he owne d and operated a restaurant in Orlando, closing and returni ng to the beaches to assume management of the family proper ties [at the death of his father in 1943].
Characteristic of the man himself and his distaste for p omposity was an event of years ago in the long since gone h ardware store of Tommy Thompson. Having heard enough of a n Atlanta hardware salesman's braggjng about his general ma nliness, Gerry departed for a few moments and retumed throu gh the front door with a six foot diamond-back rattler o n a leash as the salesman exited through the back door.

The family was traveling to Bates Co., where there were Bailey relatives. The time for thethe baby arrived, and they stopped in an old schoolhouse to await this event. The family used to joke about the big cracks in the walls--they said they were so big you could take a hound by the tail and throw him out trrough a crack in the wall. His parents had lv. in St Louis, then to Bates Co. and then back to St. Louis; then to Clark Co. ...
James went West for 3 yrs. He corresponded with Alice Ann King all the while he was gone, and upon his return he & Alice Ann were m. ...on Mar 14 1883.
They went to Kansas by train and lv. for a time with Nettie (Bailey) & Will House (she was the older sister of James A).
