General Notes for Child Joshua Grimball
Referred to as "ancestor of the John's Island Grimballs." Source: Notes of Mary Clark Brockman
"Father-in-law of James Clark, Benjamin Jenkins, and William Maxwell. Joshua Grimball, son of Thomas Grimball and Elizabeth Adams, was underage when his father wrote his will in 1721. From his father, Grimball inherited a plantation on Burned House Creek, Edisto Island, where he employed 35 slaves. he served as tax inquirer and collector for the island (1739) and commissioner, to cut and keep open Haulover Creek (1754). Grimball declined to represent the parish of St. John Colleton in the Nineteenth Royal Assembly (1749-1751). By his wife, Mary, he had five children: Sarah (m. William Maxwell), Paul, Joshua, Mary (m. Benjamin Jenkins), and Elizabeth (M. James Clark). Joshua Grimball died sometime between 2 November 1757 when he signed his will and 2 December 1757 when it was proved." Source: "Biographical Directory of the South Carolina House of Representatives", Vol. II, by Walter Edgar, USC Press.
"Joshua Grimball, (Thomas, 2. Paul, 1.) under age when his father made his will Nov. 2, 1757; proved 2d Dec. 1757; married Mary, _______. He was a planter on Edisto Island; a member of the Baptist Church, and friend of Rev. Isaac Chandler; his will leaves sons William Maxwell and Joshua Grimball executors; to wife Mary Grimball in lieu of dower, the estate he received by marriage with her, consisting of 12 negroes, and certain named personal property for widowhood and no longer; use of house he lived in, or that he was then building, but if wife claims any dower rights then bequest to her is void. To daughter-in-law Ann Grimball, relict of his son Paul Grimball 60 pounds currency for life, to be paid by his three children and grandchild, vizt. Mary Grimball, Joshua Grimball, Elizabeth Grimball, and Sarah Maxwell; son Joshua Grimball all Lands, 2320 acres more or less; rest of estate to his three children and grandchild, when 18 or married; each of them to have until of age sufficient quantity of land to support their slaves." "Joshua Grimball had issue by his wife (or wives, for from the reading of his will, apparently Mary Grimball was not the mother of his children).
