"James Pickett Adams, third child of Robert and Charlott e Pickett Adams, graduated at South Carolina College in 184 8 with first honor in his class. Admitted to the Bar in 185 0, he practiced law in Columbia, South Carolina for some ye ars but ill health required the relinquishment of his profe ssion. Elected to the House of Representatives in 1858; re- elected in 1860. Entered the Confederate service, served o n the coast as a Major in command of a battalion of Cavalry ; afterwards, he served in Virginia and elsewhere; was seve rely wounded at Trevillion Station while on the Staff of Ge neral M.C. Butler."
