According to the land papers he built a 16 x 16 log cabin and finished it with clapboard. Cam, as he was known was 1 of the trustees to whom land was gran ted for the Ravanna Cemetery.Members of Pleasant Grove Brethern Church. Samuel born in Jefferson Co, TN, in 1830; parents moved to Sevier Co., TN in 1848, to Iowa- first to Van Buren Co, ; in the winter of 1849, to Appanoose, where his mother died in April of 1877; h is father still lives with him. March 13, 1862, he married Susan J Arms trong, who was born in HArrison Co.,IND, in 1840; daughter of Joseph A, who was born Jan 24, 1797; married Jane Bently March 20, 1820; daughter of Abel B., a resident of Pittsburgh, Penn; they afterward became residents of Appanoose C o., where she died Jan 10, 1858; her father studied for the ministry, and for 34 years was Pastor of the Predestination Church; died Nov 28, 1862; after ma rriage, Mr. Cate returned to his farm in Missouri; remained until 1864, when he removed to his present place of residence, where he owns 260 acres of land, valued at $20 per acre; since has been engaged in farming and stock raising, e xcept one year spent in traveling in Nebraska and other states for the benefit of his wife's health. Mr & Mrs C are members of the Predestination Church; his first wife was a member of the United Brethern Church; his mother a member of the Predestination church for 50 years.

p 604 "Directory of Appanoose Co" Cate, Samuel, Jr. farmer, Sec 22; P.O Morovia; of southern birth and parentage; his grandfather, Samuel Cate, Sr, was born in North Carolina, ab out 1783; removed to Tennessee; married Miss Barbara Wilhite, also born in North Carolina; had eleven children; William, C, the father of Samuel, Jr., was born In efferson Co, TN., in 1804; married Susan Locke; born in NC in 1805, dau of John Locke; had 14 children. Samuel born in Jefferson Co, TN, in 1830; parents moved to Sevier Co., TN in 1848, to Iowa- first to Van Buren Co, ; in the winter of 1849, to Appanoose, where his mother died in April of 1877; h is father still lives with him. August 29, 1852, he married Miss Lucinda Wicker, daughter of James W., of this county, from North Carolina; she was born in N orth Carolina in 1835; in 1854, they moved to Mercer Co,MO., and purchased a f arm, with the expectation of making that his home; in 1860, his wife died, lea ving two children- James M, born in 1854, now a successful teacher in Neb raska; and Harvey C., Born in 1858. March 13, 1862, he married Susan J Arms trong, who was born in HArrison Co.,IND, in 1840; daughter of Joseph A, who was born Jan 24, 1797; married Jane Bently March 20, 1820; daughter of Abel B., a resident of Pittsburgh, Penn; they afterward became residents of Appanoose C o., where she died Jan 10, 1858; her father studied for the ministry, and for 34 years was Pastor of the Predestination Church; died Nov 28, 1862; after ma rriage, Mr. Cate returned to his farm in Missouri; remained until 1864, when he removed to his present place of residence, where he owns 260 acres of land, valued at $20 per acre; since has been engaged in farming and stock raising, e xcept one year spent in traveling in Nebraska and other states for the benefit of his wife's health. Mr & Mrs C are members of the Predestination Church; his first wife was a member of the United Brethern Church; his mother a member of the Predestination church for 50 years.

Lived in MO, often mentioned Mercer and Nodaway Co's. Four children buried New Hope Cem, Morovia,IA died Atchinson twp, Nodaway, MO near Wilcox.

First mention of Eliza Jane Cate by name is 1850 census Appanoos e Co, Ia age 13 3 years later married in Appanoose Co, Iowa at age 16, Lorenzo D . Rose, 1 Sept 1853 in the home of William Cate. Book 1, pg 86. on 23 Feb 1857 Sold 80 acres ofland in Mercer Co,Mo to Elijah Ho lmes for $435.The relinguishing of her dower rights by Eliza Jane constit ues the last document during her lifetime that bears her name. an entry dated 25 Jul 1856 in Iowa census of 1856 finds the youn g couple living in Farmington Township of Van Buren C, Ia. Lorenzo been in state for 3 years and Eliza for 10 years ( an exaggeration). No children in home a s yet. On 6 May 1858 in county court of Appanoose County, Ia William Ca te was appointed administrator of the estate of Lorenzo D. Rose who die d intestate 14 April 1858.
In his final report to the court in Feb 1877, William Cate state d "said decedent died of smallpox in the year 1858 leaving two small chi ldren without home or parents, the mother having died a short time before." "T he oldest child was 3 and the other an infant.
