General Notes (Husband)

[bobspu.ged]

m1. Elizabeth Jones m2. Elizabeth Caudel m3. Sarah Ann Overby

Source: Notes re: William A. Phelps BIO: Per Dallas L. PHELPS, Rose MINNICK, Paul DIETZ, et. al., who have researched the John H. PHELPS family in VIRGINIA, Wm. A. PHELPS was born in Grayson County about 1825. The name of William's mother has not been documented, but she evidently died before 1834 when John PHELPS married his second wife, Alsey LOVE. The PHELPS family was still in Grayson County, VA, at census time in 1850; however, William's name is not listed in the household. The next documented data about William is his 1851 marriage to Elizabeth JONES in Laurel County, KY. Per the 1860 census, and data on his 1858 marriage to Elizabeth CAUDEL, Elizabeth JONES and William PHELPS had two daughters, Louisa and Mary. By 1860, Elizabeth CAUDEL and William had added a third daughter to the family; Alcie Elizabeth PHELPS was reported to be 8 months old when the 1860 census was done(02 JUL 1860) Dallas PHELPS, et. al., have presumed that the couple reported twins, "Alcy" and Melville, on the 1860 census; however, this compiler has interpreted the ages of these infants as "8/12" and "2/12" , respectively. Mary PHELPS, thought to be William's younger sister was enumerated in their household. Compiler suspects the 2 month old Melville to be Mary's child. William LOVE, the father of John PHELPS' second wife, Alsey, was also counted in William's home in 1860. In 1870, William and Elizabeth (CAUDEL) report Louisa(17), Mary(16), Rachel E.(12), John H.(6), and William J.(4) in their household. Alcie E. is not listed in this census; Rachel E. was not listed on the 1860 census. Alcy should have been about 11 years old; Rachel Isabelle (who later married Wm. F. O'DELL) should have been born about 1862.(Elizabeth, wife of Wm. was reported to be unable to read and write. Assuming that she was the responder for census enumeration, this may help explain the inaccuracies.) Elizabeth CAUDEL PHELPS died sometime after the birth of their daughter, Virginia Margaret (compiler's grandmother) in October, 1870. In 1874, William married his third wife, Sarah Ann (OVERBY) O'DELL. Sarah, the widow of Civil War soldier, William Lacey O'Dell, had moved to Laurel County, KY from Claiborne County, TN., about 1863 with her four children: John Henry "Bud", Wm. Franklin "Frank", Elizabeth M. "Lizzie", and Isaac L. By the 1880 census, Sarah's children had all married; two of the three boys marrying daughters of William PHELPS. "Frank" O'DELL married first, Rachel I. PHELPS; after Rachel's death, Frank returned to claim the hand of William's youngest daughter, Virginia Margaret, in 1889. Sarah's youngest son, Isaac, married Alcie Elizabeth PHELPS in February, 1880; this couple was enumerated in William's household on the census that year. William's occupation on census records was given as "Blacksmith" in 1860 and 1870; in 1880, his age was reported as "55"; his occupation as "farmer". Deed books for Laurel County indicate that William PHELPS owned at least two tracts of land...the first, he purchased at public auction in October, 1873, but did not obtain the deed for it until a court order demanded it in April, 1874. This land included about 200 acres "on the waters of Little Rockcastle River" Compiler has not discovered what became of this property. In 1879, William bought 150 acres on the banks of the Laurel River from his father, John H. PHELPS. This property adjoined that of William's brother, Melville "Melvin", in the legal description of the property). After William's death in 1887, Sarah remained on this property and in 1892, she purchased shares from William's children, Alcie (PHELPS) O'DELL and William J. PHELPS. William A. PHELPS' place of burial has not been discovered as of Feb. 1995. On a research trip to Laurel County, KY, July 1994, compiler learned that there is an "old PHELPS' cemetery" near the Bush community. The cemetery, which lies in a wooded area on private property was located August, 1995. Only a few stones were intact and their inscriptions were difficult to read. William's was not identified. JULY 1996: Additional research in Laurel County's Court Records resulted in the discovery of a "March Special Term 1876" record of the appointment of Wm. A. PHELPS as guardian for Samuel I. PARMAN. The order reads as follows: Ordered that W.A. Phelp be and he is hereby appointed Guardian to Samuel Parman son and Heir of Alexander Parman, Dec. Said Sam being over 14 years of Age and in Court and announced the Said Phelp being in court taken the required oath and entered into bond with John Lankerly as Surety which bond was approved by the Court.

Other court records concerning William PHELPS were found from April, 1868: William was appointed surveyor of a road and October, 1869: William was appointed guardian for Wm. F. and I. L. Odell, "infant heirs of Wm. L. Odell, dec'd. The court order appointing William A. as guardian to Samuel Parman may have been copied into the wrong book. The order happened in 1870, Alexander died in 1869, and Samuel would have been 20 and married by the 1876 date.

General Notes for Child Alcie Elizabeth Phelps

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: This daughter of William PHELPS and sister of compiler's grandmother is shown in the PHELPS household in 1860 as being an infant, just a few months of age. She should have shown up on the 1870 census as about 10 years old, but her name was not listed in William's household that year. She appears again in 1880 as the daughter of William PHELPS, but also as one part of a couple who are counted as a second family in the same dwelling. Isaac L. O'DELL is listed with her as William's son-in-law. Marriage records in Laurel Co., KY show this marriage took place in February, just before the census was taken. (The "BRANCHES OF LAUREL" reference below shows this marriage on "2/19/1880", probably the day the application was filed.) In 1892, after her father's death, "Alsey" (who signed her name "Alcie E. Odell"), her brother William J. and her husband, Isaac L. O'DELL, sold their shares of William PHELPS' property to Isaac's mother, Sarah Ann (OVERBY) O'DELL PHELPS. Then by 1900, Alcie and Isaac had removed to INDIANA and are shown on the census in Walnut Twp., Montgomery Co., IN with 6 of their 8 children. (Alcie reported that she gave birth to 8 children, but that 7 were living at that time). Flora, the oldest child at home, was 19, so it was evident that an older child had married and left home. (Dora E. md W.T. MOORE in 1898) On the marriage record for Alcie and Isaac, the data given for the bride is that she was 20 years old (2 years older than Isaac); she was born in Laurel Co.; her father was born in Grayson Co., VA; her mother in Laurel Co.; the wedding took place at the home of William PHELPS; and the witnesses were: Wm. BROCK and "F.R. O'DELL". (This is probably "Frank" or "W.F."; compiler's grandfather and a brother to Isaac). It was suspected that compiler's mother was named for this aunt. The given name appears in a variety of spellings; Alsey, Alcie, Alice, Alesy and even Allice, depending on which document is being examined. Compiler's mother's first name was spelled "Alcie". The discovery of "Alice Elizabeth PHELPS O'DELL" on an index of obituaries in the Stutsman County, ND Library confirmed compiler's suspicion that her mother was named for this aunt. To this point, only the middle initial "E." was known. -------------- April, 1996 - A letter to compiler from Hubert D. O'DELL talked about Alcie PHELPS -- "My mother had a sister, Alcie, whom she was very fond of and whom I never seen; they corresponded regularly and Aunt Alcie sent my mother a "setting" of silver laced wyandotte chicken eggs, I guess they were what you would call 'pretty' but as I remember their eggs werent any different than mothers old 'domineckers.' Now there was one brother to Mom and aunt Alcie whose name was Jason...and Uncle Ike moved to Indiana and my mother came to Indiana to 'take care' of aunt Alcie when she gave birth, my Mother liked Indiana so much... Uncle Ike moved his family to Eldridge North Dakota, he became post master there for years; Now I think that the baby you wrote about was Aunt Alcies youngest son whose name was Lacy Paul and it runs in my mind that he was about your mother's age, he was one of the youngest soldiers in the first World War. Soon after my mother died in 1924, Lacy Paul came to Ind. for a while. After Aunt Alcie passed away, uncle Ike came to visit dad and they came and spent some time with Harriette and I in 1940... His (Uncle Ike's) family all went to California...My mother and Aunt Alcie were very close and Uncle Ike and my dad were close..." ----------------------------- July 1996: Compiler found a birth record listed in Vol. 2, Index to Birth Records, Montgomery Co., IN, 1882-1920, p 186. It reads: "ODELL___female Isaac ODELL Alice PHILLIPS, 20 August 1893, Bk. H5-35." From birth years given on the 1900 census, there is no female whose date of birth matches that of this record. Alcie did report on the 1900 census that one of her eight children was no longer living; it is possible that this child was "the female" born August, 1893, between the births of Robert E. (Aug 1892) and Ida (July 1899). -------------------------------- August, 1997: Compiler established contact with George L. BARRON, a genealogical researcher in Jamestown, ND. Mr. BARRON has provided a large amount of photocopied documentation on this family. One of the items copied was an article from a ND History concerning Isaac O'DELL and his family, residents of Stutsman County. In that article, the ninth child of Isaac and Alcie is named. "John Franklin, who died when a year old..." It is likely that the "female" born to this couple in August of 1893 was actually a male, John Franklin. However, it should also be noted that there were at least two other gaps between births of the children in this family that would have been possible times for John Franklin's birth. The following obituary and follow up article from the Jamestown newspaper were copied by Mr. BARRON:

General Notes for Child Virginia Margaret (Maggie) Phelps

[bobspu.ged]

10 children: BIO: Compiler knows very little about her Grandmother Virginia Margaret except a few details related to her by A. Elizabeth O'DELL, compiler's mother. From the time of "Lizzie's" birth, Virginia Margaret had a crippled leg. Per "Lizzie," her mother cut the bottom from a cane-bottom chair. By putting her crippled leg on the chair, Virginia Margaret used it like what we now know as a "walker", which enabled her to carry out the tasks of caring for her large family. Compiler particularly remembers stories that portrayed this grandmother as a quiet-spoken, philosophical woman who must have held to considerable mountain superstition. For example, following her eldest daughter's elopement, she, out of great disappointment chided the girl with "hopes that (Hettie) would not live to regret having been married in black." (Virginia Margaret had been in the process of making a pink dress for the bride when they decided to elope). On the day when "Lizzie" mashed her finger between the pump and the pump handle in a fit of temper, Virginia Margaret prophesied that "...(Lizzie) will go to your grave with this reminder of your quick temper..." (And she did!) Virginia lost her own mother soon after she was born; she was raised by her father, her older sister and her stepmother, Sarah OVERBEY O'DELL PHELPS, who was reputed to be "very difficult." Virginia's husband, Sarah's son, was also a demanding and difficult person; her life as his wife and mother to ten children was far from easy. She spent a great amount of time as a "single parent" because of her husband's frequent travel. Pictures of Virginia Margaret in the early 1920s show her as a rather stout woman, whose posture was "tall and erect" (as was her daughter Elizabeth's). She had a rather square face, dark hair and eyes; her long hair was braided and the braids wound around her head. Her two oldest daughters wore their own hair in this same style in their middle years, and showed great resemblance to their mother. There has been argument among compiler and her siblings about our grandmother's "real name." Compiler remembered always hearing Margaret Virginia. Some of the siblings argued for Virginia Margaret. The O'DELL Family Tree Book records her name as Virginia Margaret. When compiler finally re-examined Grandma's tombstone, she had to yield-- the stone reads "Virginia Margaret..." March 1996: Compiler received a letter from Hubert D. O'DELL, Virginia's youngest son. The pages from his mother's Bible which contain handwritten family records show her name as "Maggie V." Apparently she was called "Maggie", but whether the Virginia was a middle name or whether she simply preferred to use her middle name is not known. One of the Family Record pages contains the following notation in what seems to be a man's writing (Frank O'DELL's??): "William F. Odell and Maggie V Phelps was Maried Oct the 27 1889." On another page from the same Bible, in what appears to be the same writing and the same green ink is written, "Maggie Phelps 18?0" (maybe '70) "was Bornd Oct the 19 18?0" ('looks like '90 in one place, then directly under it is another "1890" with lines drawn through it.) ************************ "Maggie" died when her youngest son, "Knute" was about 11 years old. A final note of tribute to her was expressed by "Knute" in his letter to compiler: "I never got to know my mother very well, but I have heard my older brothers say,

no one ever done so much with so little to do with' as my mother in raising us offsprings. She was the power behind the throne." --------------------- April, 1996 -- Another letter from Hubert D. O'DELL to compiler contained the following passages: "My mother had a sister, Alcie, whom she was very fond of and whom I never seen; they corresponded regularly and Aunt Alcie sent my mother a 'setting' of silver laced wyandotte chicken eggs, I guess they were what you would call 'pretty' but as I remember their eggs werent any different than mothers old 'domineckers.'...and my mother came to Indiana to 'take care' of aunt Alcie when she gave birth, my Mother liked Indiana so much that she told my dad that she was going to move 'out of that God Forsaken hole'... My mother and Aunt Alcie were very close and Uncle Ike and my dad were close... ... My Mother could read (and) write, after a fashion, but she was the one that really raised us kids, for instance, according to aunt Hetty, my 2 brothers Sam and Red would send money home during W.W. I and mother used her money the boys sent home and bought a milk cow with it. I dont want you to think my dad was a no good piece of worthlessness, he was a good, Christian, honest hard working man that would do anything for a neighbor. When he left Kentucky he became a fiddle foot who couldnt keep Kentucky out of his memory..." Examination of the 1920 Census for Fulton County, IN showed Virginia M. O'DELL as 49 years of age, born in KENTUCKY. She reported that she was able to read and write, that her father was born in VIRGINIA and her mother in KENTUCKY. At the time of this enumeration, Virginia and her husband had seven children residing in their household - John G., 25, Thomas L., 19, Isaac M., 18, Alcie E., 16, Lillie R., 12, Callie O., 10 and Hubert D., 7. The "BRANCHES OF LAUREL" reference listed below gives the date of marriage for this couple as "10/26/1889", probably the day the application was filed.
