One of the most powerful Wessex rulers, he defeated the South Saxons in battle in 722 and 725 and the Cornish Britions in 710. He set up a port at Southampton and founded the monastery at Glastonbury. His greatest achievement, however, was the important law code he compiled between 690 and 693 which reveals a growing sophistication in the consideration of the concepts of Kingship and royal authority.
