General Notes (Husband)

[mytree.FTW]

From Totten Family History by Durling - Richard Totten was born between 1643 and 1644, possibly at Hemps tead, Long Island. No Richard is listed on the shipping lines pr ior to 1650 suggesting Richard's birth in the New Netherlands. N o Richard Totten is listed in the 1658 tax list of Hempstead as having cattle, milk cows, calves, or acreage. His name first app ears in the Hempstead records in 1665, when he was granted a thr ee acre home lot. Richard was a farmer and acted as cowkeeper fo r the town of Hempstead at least twice, in 1665 and 1668. He was listed as a freeholder in 1683. The names of six sons of Richar d and Sarah Champion have been learned. There are very likely so me daughters whose names have not come to light, and possibly a son or two who did not reach maturity. The 1698 census of Hempst ead lists Richard's second wife, Elizabeth Roe, and children Sam uel, William, Benjamin, Jasper, Richard, Mary, and one unnamed ( newborn). Following Richard Sr.'s death on 12 June 1712 there wa s a quarrel concerning the estate between Peter, weaver, eldest son of Richard, and Peter Jr., cord-winder, eldest son of Peter. It was settled by Richard Sr's sons William, Benjamin, and Jasp er.

[mytree.FTW]

From Totten Family History by Durling - Samuel married but the name of his wife is unknown. He recorded his stock mark in 1688 and was living with his father, Richard, in 1698 census.

General Notes for Child William Totten

[mytree.FTW]

William Totten was married in 1703 but the name of his wife is u nknown. He was deeded 20 acres on the East side of Hempstead Har bor by his father Richard in 1703. He recorded his stock mark in 1699. Three possible children born between 1705 and 1709 are Wi lliam, Richard, and Jasper.

General Notes for Child Benjamin Totten

[mytree.FTW]

Benjamin Totten is listed in the 1698 Census of Hempstead. Benjamin Totten struck up a friendship with Jurgen or Jurrie Spr ingsteen of Bowrie and Fishkill, who was not satisfied with the way Hempstead was becoming crowded and the lack of available lan d in the area. They decided to seek their fortunes elsewhere. Ju rgen and his wife along with Benjamin, who was probably unmarrie d at the time, packed everything they owned into two wagons and started the long, perilous journey upstate looking for suitable land to start farming. They found it in the highlands, as the ea rly Dutch called the Mattewan area, along Fishkill Creek, presen tly Beacon, New York, in what later was to become Dutchess Count y. It is not known when they reached the highlands but it was pr obably between 1695 and 1700. Jurgen and Benjamin started workin g the land, clearing fields and plowing. Benjamin recorded his c attle mark in Hempstead in 1701. Benjamin is listed in the Dutch ess County, NY, South Ward census 1729/1730 and 1740. His Will i s listed in the New York Calendar of Wills, page 391.

On 16 January 1672 the Town of Hempstead granted Thomas Champion additional lands adjacent to Frances Jacock's: "a pece of land joyning to his father's field at the south side of John Carman's tilsome."
