General Notes (Wife)
McDaniels: All information on Mary, except surname. ************************* Source: website of Dayle: Notes for MARY ADAMS: From Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo, CA newspaper Obituary "AGED RESIDENT PASSES TO REST Was One of the Oldest Women in the State Within two months of the century mark, Mrs. Mary Grainger of this place, passed peacefully to the long rest Friday, October 9th, at the home of her son, C.B. Grainger, on Bridge street. This remarkable woman, during her life-time, had witnessed almost the complete drama of the birth and growth of this nation. She was 8 years old when Texas declared its independence of Mexico and was 19 years old when Texas was taken into the Union. At the time of her birth but two states west of the Appalachian range had been admitted to the Union (Arkansas and Michigan) and all the Northwest territory from Michigan to the coast, including Washington and Oregon, was claimed by Great Britain and the Mississippi valley had recently been purchased from France. Mrs. Grainger's parents were among the pioneers who pushed across the Mississippi river to settle that great territory in an endeavor to keep it from becoming a slave state. The Mississippi basin was almost wholly given over to Indians and buffalo. Life on the frontier, in those days was real and earnest, and there is little doubt but that Mrs. Grainger lived in a log house, spun flax and wool for garments for the women and tht the men were garbed largely in buckskin; that life was in the raw in every sense of the word. It is wondertul to think of the progress of the country during the span of one life, to consider the primitive arcadian simplicity of those days, when even a letter by mail was an event, of ox teams and the present generation of high power gas cars, airplanes, radio, etc. When Mrs. Grainger had reached the legal age of 21, Califomia was still a Mexican settlement, with a scattered chain of Missions up and down the coast, and an occasional cattle ranch, every 50 or 100 miles. San Francisco and Los Angeles were Indian-Mexican pueblos and an American was a curiosity. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon, Revs. Johnston and Nelson of the M.E. Church officiating. An immense concourse of friends and neighbors gathered to bear the body to its last resting place, which was escorted to the cemetery by thrityseven of 61 living direct descendants of the deceased. The casket borne by grandsons and great grandsons as follows: The pall bearers were, grandsons: Kyle Grainger, Rollo Grainger, Willie Sproul. Great grandsons: Kyle Truesdale, Thomas Truesdale and Orville Truesdale. The surviving children are C.B. Grainger of Arroyo Grande, Mrs. Jane Sproul of Los Angeles, W.P. Grainger of Shandon, and J.T. Grainger of Los Angeles, A.G. Grainger of Fullerton, Alice Standiford of Arroyo Grande. Of the original family of seven, but one is dead. The following brief biography is submitted by her son, C.B. Grainger of Arroyo Grande, who is himself 75 years old: Mary Grainger was born January 14, 1825 in North Carolina, Wilksburg county, near the town of Wilksburg. Moved with her parents to Johnson county, Missouri, at the age of seven in 1832. She was married to Thomas Grainger in theyear of 1847. There were born to them seven children, four boys and three girls who are all alive except one sister. When the Civil War came the husband joined the U.S. army, Co. E. of the First Mo. Cavalry, and died the 12th of December, 1862 and was buried in the U.S. Cemetery at Springfield, MO. Mrs. Grainger lived in Missouri until 1868, when she moved to Kansas with the family, where she lived until the year of 1883 when, she came to California and settled at Santa Paula, Ventura county. She and a sister lived together until they got too old to keep house alone, when they broke up housekeeping. She then came to live with her son, C.B. Crainger, at Arroyo Grande and lived here until her death, the 9th of November, 1923 being 98 years, 9 months and 25 days. She joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church when young but when the War came on, the church was broken up and she then connected herself to the Baptist Church and was a member of the church until the time of her death. Six children, twelve grand children, thirty-seven great grandchildren and twelve great great grandchildren survive." General Notes for Child Columbus Baxter Grainger
Source: Dayle: Notes for COLUMBUS BAXTER GRAINGER: Excerpt from "San Luis Obispo County and Environs, 1917" He was a native of Missouri, of English descent, who achieved some distinction in the Union Army. As a Kansas farmer, he came to California in 1876, making for Ventura County, where he farmed for eight years. In 1884 he homesteaded two miles south of Shandon, and later he was one of the early merchants in that town." From San Luis Obipso Co. Arroyo Grande newspaper: Obituary DEATH CALLS C.B. GRAINGER OLD PIONEER Had Been Resident of County for the Past Forty eight Years Funeral Services Will Be Held Tomorrow at the Methodist Church "C.B. Grainger, one of our most highly esteemed pioneer citizens, passed away at his home on West Branch Street at 2:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon after an illness of several months. Cause of death was a general breaking down due to his advanced age of 84 years, 7 months and 16 days. Columbus Baxter Grainger was born in Warrensburg, Johnston County, MO., January 23, 1848, and moved to Kansas in 1869. He was married to Miss Melita Jane Gardner in Perry, KS, January 26, 1873. To this union four children were born, one of whom died in infancy. Mr. Grainger, a farmer by occupation, came to California in 1875 first settling in Santa Paula, Ventura County, where Mrs. Grainger passed away in 1881, leaving three small children, twin daughters, Nora and Zora, and a daughter, Alta. In 1883 he married Miss Eliza Roselmer Pfost of Santa Paula and to this union was born one son, Ira Grainger. Mr. Grainger moved to Shandon in 1884, where he was one of the pioneer farmers of that section and where he farmed extensively until 1904 when he and Mrs. Grainger moved to Berros and purchased the farm now owned by Mrs. G.W. Risk. In 1917 they moved to Arroyo Grande and bought the home on Allen street now occupied by his granddaughter, Mrs. Victor Tarwater. Mrs. Grainger passed away April 16, 1921 in a San Luis hospital and was laid to rest in the Arroyo Grande cemetery. In 1932 Mr. Grainger bought the home on West Branch street he occupied until his death. On July 28, 1926, he was married to Lydia Westfall of this city, who passed away at her home four years later on July 13, 1930, since which time Mr. Grainger has been living alone except at intervals when he was ill and his sister, Mrs. Alice Standiford, and his daughters would come and look after his welfare. Mr. Grainger leaves to mourn the passing of a devoted father, four children, three daughters, Mrs. Hillis Truesdale, Mrs. Willis Truesdale and Mrs. Alta Ramsey, all of Shandon; one son, Ira Grainger of Maywood; seventeen grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Standiford of Arroyo Crande and Mrs. Jane Sproul of Bell, CA; three brothers, Thomas Grainger of Bell, Alexander Grainger of Fullerton and William Grainger. Mr. Grainger was a devoted Christian and for many years was a member of the Methodist church in Shandon and since his residence here in 1904 has been one of the most faithful and loyal members of the local Methodist church. He was a kind friend and neighbor and made hosts of friends during his lifetime with his unusually pleasing personality. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church with Rev. E. J. Bradner officiating. Interment will be in the Arroyo Grande Cemetery.', "Sleep on, Dear friend, such lives as thine Have not been lived in vain. But hold an influence, rare, divine, on lives that here remain."
