Asa was known an ardent Confederate sympathizer, rendering aid i n every possible way to the government and Southern soldiers nee ding aid. Asa owned five or six slaves and owned several hundred acres with an estimated value of between $40,000 and $50,000.

They lived in a large, frame house, Colonial style, built largel y of oak and cedar lumber. There were eight rooms besides large airy halls, pantry and closets and long wide porches both lower and upper stories.

He owned a large farm, beginning with a smaller farm without sla ves soon after marriage.
