GEN: JOHN WAS THE EMIGRANT AND A FOUNDER OF WALLINGF O R D , C ONN. John Moss was one of the first colonists t o N e w Ha ve n Colony, and signed the compact there in 163 9 . H e wa s a re presentative to the General Court from N e w Have n fo r many y ears. He held the rank of Corporal a n d was on e o f the origi nal purchasers of the town. He w a s also pro mine nt in the es tablishment of the church.

John joined with the magistrates and chief inhabit a n t s o f New Haven in urging permission "to erect a vill a g e o n ou r lands lieing above ye great plaine." Permiss i o n wa s grant ed 10/10/1667. For two years, the territo r y wa s pro specte d for an eligible site by John Moss, Jo h n Broc kett , Abraha m Doolittle and others, who suggest e d the sit e whi ch was ch osen for the village of Walling fo rd, CT. Jo hn Mos s had arri ved in Boston 6/85/1437, wi t h the Davenpo rt Co . on the "Hec tor." It is probable th a t he came fro m the vi cinity of Wall ingford, England , i n Berks Co. abou t 10 mile s from Oxford . At the tim e th e General Court i n Hartford n amed the town , John Mo ss wa s Deputy to its se ssion. It i s presumed, ther efore , tha t we owe the selecti on of the to wn's name to Jo h n Moss.
