General Notes (Husband)
The medieval Norman family of de Braose made a formi d a b l e impact on the Adur valley in West Sussex and on t h e m ar ch es of Wales.
Yet the name de Braose is hardly traceable in histor y b o o k s today. Local people could be forgiven for knowi ng n ot hi n g of the family's role in their region's histo ry. T h e sto r y of the de Braoses is written in the stone s of c as tles a n d churches. It is remarkably preserved a nd visi bl e for th os e who wish to search for it.
The barons de Braose were ambitious and ruthless conqu e r o r s but the barbarity of their past now illuminates s o m e o f t he most beautiful sites of Britain's medieval h er it age.
The battle of Hastings on October 14, 1066 marked a tu r n i n g point in the history of England. William duke o f No rm an d y invaded the country with seven thousand men , incl udi n g ov er two thousand mounted knights and squir es.
King Harold's army, fighting on foot, made a challeng i n g o p position but was overcome by volleys of Norman ar ro w s an d c avalry charges. The slaughter was immense. Wi lli a m th e Conq ueror went on to enforce his rule with th e sa m e mili tary ef ficiency.
The Normans were energetic warriors but also deeply rel i g i o us. The altar of Battle abbey was placed on the sp o t wh e r e king Harold was wounded with an arrow and cu t do wn. N or ma n fighting men were obliged to do heavy pe nanc e for t h e sin s of war. William the Conqueror founde d th e Benedic ti ne abb ey in 1070 for the salvation of hi s sou l.
Many Norman lords who sailed to England with duke Wil l i a m c ontributed some of their new found wealth to th e ab be y . Amo ng these "companions of the Conqueror" wa s Willi a m d e Braos e.
William de Braose appears in The Chronicle of Battl e A b b e y as one of the early benefactors.
In those days also a powerful man among the king's ba r o n s , William, surnamed 'de Briouze', gave to the chur c h o f B at tle in the county of Sussex and in the rape a n d boro ug h o f Bramber, eight messuages, and three othe r s in Shor eha m, f ree and quit, of his own demesne, an d be sides thes e , a hid e of land in Shoreham as well, t o be h eld for ev e r withou t claim, and besides, one hund red amb rae of sal t a nnually , and also ten measures of w ine whic h the abbo t o f Fecamp p aid him each year fo r a certain l and he hel d fro m him, Warm inghurst near Ch ancton. And o n behalf o f a knig ht of his, n amed Hanseli n, he concede d another hi de of lan d called Erri ngham, f ree in the sam e way. And a t the sam e time another k nigh t of his, calle d Ralph son o f Theodore , out of his o w n demesne, with th e assent and c onfirmatio n of his lor d Wil liam de Briouze , gave anothe r hundred amb rae of sa lt to th e church. Fur ther, one of t he men of Will iam d e Briouze, Te tbert by n ame, won over b y the report s o f virtue and sancti ty, lon ged to undertak e a monasti c conv ersion. He brought h imse lf, dedicated, t o Battl e and wit h the assent and confir m ation of his lord , bro ught with hi m, free and into the et e rnal possessio n o f the church, hi s land, namely one hid e o f land at Cha n cton in Heregrave , which is called Wulv run-hi de. Al l o f which Philip de Bri ouze assented to an d confirm e d in th e presence of his fath er William. And W illiam c onced ed, a ccording to the liberti es and royal di gnitie s of the c hur ch of Battle, that the b urgesses he g ave m ight buy and s e ll within their houses fr eely, witho ut c laim and withou t t oll, except on market-day , when i t i s customary to tra nsac t business in public.
Lord of the Rape
William de Braose sailed to England with William the Co n q u e ror in 1066 (2.1) His home was Briouze in Normandy , n e a r Fa laise where the Conqueror was born. The de Bra os e fa mi ly or igins are unknown, except for the name o f Wil liam' s m othe r Gunnor.
King William distributed manors across the countr y t o h i s c ompanions but he chose his best warriors fro m th e Nor ma n no bility to defend the coast of Sussex. Tr ade a nd tra ve l betw een Sussex and Normandy was a lifeli ne fo r the ne w c onquero rs.
Sussex was divided into five (later six) rapes. The k i n g c r eated a lordship for each rape, possessing all i t s ma nor s , and the lord built or strengthened a major c as tle a n d a p ort. Trade with Normandy soon flourished , fre e fro m i nterfe rence by English rebels or invader s such a s th e Fren ch or t he Danes.
William de Braose became lord of the rape of Brambe r a n d h e ld over two hundred manors elsewhere. His rap e wa s ca rve d o ut of the lands of his two Norman neighbo urs , Willi am d e Wa renne and Roger de Montgomery. The d e Bra ose rap e stra ddle d the river Adur, rectifying th e Conque ror's ea rly def ensiv e error in creating a bound ary a t a vulnerabl e rive r estuar y.
William de Braose began building Bramber castle, near S t e y n ing, before 1073 to dominate the fertile Adur rive r v al l e y and its estuary. At first the castle would ha ve b e e n a d itch and a wooden enclosure with a high defe nsiv e m ou nd ins ide. Stone castles were only started aft er lo ca l res istanc e was under firm control.
The rape also needed inland defences so William buil t K n e p p castle, near Shipley. A mound and some flint ru in s c a n st ill be seen. Shipley church has survived wit h ma ny N or man f eatures intact.
The river Adur was wider and deeper than it is toda y . I t h a d a thriving port at Steyning named after an im po rtan t Sa xo n church, Saint Cuthman's. The father of En gla nd' s roya l li ne, king "thelwulf, was originally buri ed t her e in 858 . I n 1043 Edward the Confessor granted S ain t Cuth man's chu rch , with Steyning, Ashurst and Warmi nghu rst man ors, to th e Be nedictine abbey of Fâecamp i n Norma ndy. Th e monks ha d give n him refuge during his e xile i n Normandy , then as k ing o f England Edward reward ed thei r hospitali ty.
King Harold's father severed the link between Saint Cut h m a n 's and Fâecamp in his efforts to check the Norma n inf lu en c e on English affairs. William the Conqueror c ited t hi s ou tr age as one of the reasons for his invasio n and F âec amp a bbe y lent its powerful moral support. T he Norma n att ack an d Wi lliam's claim to the throne wo n the pope' s bles sing . Bened ictines welcomed the Conqu eror at Hast ings i n anti cipatio n of lavish future endow ment.
