General Notes (Husband)

The Fred Millis book states that Benjamin was probably born in Culpepper Co. Viginia (son John born in Culpepper), and that he first maried Elizabeth Lee and then L. Greene said to be the sister or General Greene. He had 29 sons and 2 daughters and was the uncle of General George Rogers Clark and William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Benjamin was well set financially probably because his father bequeathed him and his brother Johh, substantial land and funds. Benjamin then began acquiring land in Lunenburg County in 1764, there is a considerable record of him and his progency in those records. Apparently Benjamin then passed substantial funds to his children because son John was well off.

Fred Millis states in his book that John was a brother or half brother to both General Marston Greene Clark and William Clark, early prominent settlers of Salem, Indiana. John moved to Maryland before 1780 where he married Ann. About 1780 they moved to Fayette County, Kentucky. He must have been well off fancially since he obtained a 3,000 acre land grant from the state of Virginia in Jessamine County, next to Fayette County, which became Kentucky. Perhaps another note that he had considerable funds was that he helped pay for fortifications for Lexington, Kentucky in the Revolutionary War. In any event the newspapers of the time referred to him as a "large land and slave holder in Fayette County.. The Kentucky Gazette in Lexington contained many short articles about John and his land and slave transactions between 1780 and his death in 1806. Two articles mention that John leased his house, or part of it to George Tegarden and subsequently Hugh M'Ilvain for use as a store. These gentlemen had advertisements of sales in the paper.
