Aaron Sackett Letter to Samuel Sackett, his brother: December 18, 1785
This was transcribed by Thurmon King e-mail address TEKing221 @aol.com
The following letter is the one that is partly written in code. Those
portions are bracketed. A notation in the margin of the copy says it was
written by Aaron Sackett to Samuel. The text indicates that the brother
written to had left town in less than desirable circumstances. I notice
that
it was written in the same year that he married Dorcas Clark InHamilton,
OH.
so the reference to "it will ruin me for I am jest beginning in theworld
and
have nothing to Spair" would fit. In the Sackett letters the upper lefthand
of the first page usually contained the name of the place from which the
letter was written. This one is hard to read but looks like Skipton.Aaron's
"h" and "k" look very much alike. Also in these letters the letters "s""p"
and "f" all look very much alike with the exception being an "s" on theend
of
a word. These are the same as it is written today.
Aaron' descendants should enjoy it.

certify that on this 23rd day of May A.D. 1857 personally appeared in the
County Court of Sangamon County. Isaac Campbell and John Spencer the two
subscribing witnesses to the within will and who being duly sworn deposeand
say that they were present when the testatrix Dorcas Sackett depose the
within will. That she acknowledged the terms to be her last Will and
Testament and wished them to witness it as such. They further witness that
they believe the Testatrix to have been of sound mind and memory at thetime
they witnessed this will by attaching their names thereto. Given under __
__ at Springfield this 23rd day of May AD 1857.

Be it remembered that I, Dorcas Sackett of the County of Sangamen, Stateof
Illinois widow of Aaron Sackett Dec. of Ohio considering the uncertaintyof
this mortal life and being of sound mind and memory blessed by God for the
same -- do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and
form following (that is to say) First I give and bequeath unto my eldestson
Thomas Sackett and my two daughters Phebe Mosteller and Sarah Watt two
hundred dollars each I do also give and bequeath unto the Heirs of my son
John Sackett Dec. -- fifty dollars worth of movable property which said
fifty dollars being the remaining part of one hundred dellare that was
willed to him my son by his Father Aaron Sackett the other fifty dollarshe
has already received as will appear by a receipt in my possession. And I
also bequeath unto Thos Sackett, Phebe Mosteller, Sarah Watt and John
Sackett, Heirs, a certain lot of land being the west half of the northwest
quarter section No. 33 Township 17 North 6 West of the 3rd principle
meridian to be equally divided between them. Provided nevertheless if myson
Samuel Sackett will settle and allow an account that I hold against himfor
ninety-eight dollars drawing twelve percent interest from date untilsettled
the date whereof is August the 8th 1837 then and in that case he is tohave
an equal part with the other four named Heirs to the above lot of land but
if he neglects to settle he is to have no part or lot in the land the
remainder of my estate (if any) to be equally divided between the five
children and lastly my said son Thomas Sackett whom I hereby appoint sole
executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former
