General Notes (Husband)

[18401.ged]

According to the Redfield Book, Sylvanus was alive in Twinsburg, Ohio, at th time of the printing of the book in 1860. The 1860 census for Twinsburg, however, shows Esther living alone with sons Richard and Orrin.

E-mail correspondence with James Redfield, great-great grandson of Sylvanus, shows family records indicate that Sylvanus died "en route to Kansas, and is buried i Geneva, Kansas". Later correspondence with Loren Adams, USGenWeb site manager for Allen county, KS, turned up his gravesite. He is buried in Part 1, Row 9, Lot 139 in the Geneva cemetery, Geneva, Kansas. The records show his birth date as September 16, 1798, instead of September 18. I'll stick with the recor in the Redfield book of September 18 until proven otherwise.[Downing.ged]

The year that Sylvanus removed from the family compound in Killingworth to Twinsburg, Summit county, Ohio, is unknown, but the "Genealogical History of th Redfield Family in the United States", printed in 1860, states "He removed to Twinsburg, Ohio, many years ago." According to the Redfield Book, Sylvanus was alive in Twinsburg, Ohio, at the time of the printing of the book in 1860. The records show his birth date as September 16, 1798, instead of September 18. I'll stick with the record in the Redfield book of September 18 until proven otherwise, although it is possible that September 18 was a baptismal date. There is no marker on the grave. A document found on microfilm in the Family History Library on his son, J.C Redfield, states the following:
"A diary kept by <J.C.> while preempting his claim in Kansas, gives minute details of his trip to Twinsburg for his bride and their coming to Kansas, accompanied by his father, who, being a carpenter and contractor, was going to build them a new house; of the illness contracted by his father enroute, and hi demise the day after reaching their destination." Film 1697428, FHL. This appears to be quoted from a paper written by his daughter, Pearl, sometime between 1912 and 1917.

General Notes (Wife)

[18401.ged]

Esther Clark appears in the 1880 census of Allen County, Kansas, City of Humboldt, as living with her son (Orrin S. Redfield) and his family. The age given is 81, and " she suffers from rheumatism". Her name in the census appeears as "Ester". It also lists both parents as being born in Connecticut. The 1850 Census for Twinsburg, Summit County, Ohio, shows her name as Esther. It shows her age as 50 in October of 1850.[Downing.ged]

According to cemetery records, she is buried adjacent to Richard R. Redfield and his wife, Ida. However, on my 1999 visit to Mt. Hope cemetery, I found that the grave is not marked in any way. I is interesting to note that there is no marker on the grave of her husband, Sylvanus Graves Redfield, in the Geneva Cemetery, either. Esther's father, Zelotes Clark, served during the Revolutionary War. A copy of his pension application, received from the National Archives, is in the files.

General Notes for Child Adeline Redfield

[Downing.ged]

Adeline and her husband, William Andrews, were most elusive for two years. Then, during my June, 1999, trip to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, I discovered a microfilm containing an update of the Redfield genealogy book by John Howard Redfield. The new page provided information that she, too, moved to Humboldt, Kansas, after the Civil War, and she appears on all the census indexes from 1870 to 1900. It also provided her death date and confirmation of her two children. The pension records of William H. Andrews, received August 5, 1999 from the National Archives, confirmed all data. Adeline Redfield Andrews and her family are buried in Mt. Hope cemetery in Humboldt. On July 5, 1999, I retained Beverly Miller, an officer of the Humboldt Genealogical Society, to research the Andrews family. As a result, i was learned that the entire family is buried in Section B, Lot No. 111. On my May, 2000, visit to Humboldt, I located and photographed the grave marker of William, Adeline, and their two sons. They are not far from the various Redfield grave markers. An obituary, in the files, states Adeline died of "congestion of the lungs, following the grip". Most likely pneumonia. The 1901/02 City Directory of Humboldt shows the following entry: "Andrews Wm H (Mrs. Adeline) res NY cor. 10th"

General Notes for Child Josiah Clark Redfield

[18401.ged]

The following entries are from Cutler's "History of Kansas", section on Allen County, Kansas:

"The second term of the United States District Court was held at the same place (Cofachique) in October, 1858, Judge Williams presiding; J.B.Lambkin was Clerk, and J.E.Morris, Sheriff. The grand jury was as follows: L.E.Rhodes; Thomas H. Bashaw; Thomas Dean; J.B.Young; Jacob Buzzard; Moses Neal; Michael Kiser; Robert Culbertson; Simon Camerer; A.G.Carpenter; J.C.Redfield; William Pace; Charles Barton; D.Reese; and Rufus Wood. there were a number of civil cases before the court, and indictments were found agains Leonard Fuqua, for assault and battery with intent to kill Josiah C. Redfield and assault of P.P.Philips, and several others on the same charge. These were nearly all the result of disputes over land claims, and further than indictments the cases were not prosecuted" (Allen County History, Part 2)

"On the fourth Monday in March, 1860, a special election was held, and resulted in the election of J.G.Rikard, Probate Judge; J.C.Redfield, Sheriff. At the same election Humboldt (Kansas) was made the county seat." (Allen County History, Part 3)

"The first regular election after Kansas became a state took place in November, 1861. Following is the result of the vote in Allen County: D.M. Valentine was elected Representative; J.E.Childs, Probate Judge; J.C.Redfield, Sheriff." (Allen County History, Part 3)

Humboldt (KS) was organized as a village on April 6, 1866. In the spring o 1870, Humboldt was organized as a city of the third class. W.W.Curdy was elected Mayor; T.L.Byrne, Clerk; and J.C.Redfield, Treasurer." (Allen County History, Part 4.)

The 1860 census shows Josiah and his wife, Hannah, living in Geneva, KS. His occupation is listed as "Farmer". He lists personal assets in that census wit a value of $375.00.

The 1880 census shows Josiah and His wife, Hannah, living on Emporia Street, Wichita, Kansas (roll 1254396). He is listed as a "Dry Goods Merchant" with his wife and four children. The 1900 census shows them at 349 N. Emporia Street, and that they had six children, five of whom were living (1900) By an amazing find, Josiah was the census taker for his district for the 1900 census.

From William G. Cutler's "History of the State of Kansas"; Sedgwick County, Pt. 12:

" J.C.REDFIELD, commission merchant, was born in Summit County, Ohio, in 1832 son of S. G. Redfield and Esther (Clark) Redfield. Married, in 1859, Miss Hannah A. Nichols. They have five children - Flora G., Frank, Kate, Belle, and Pearl. He came to Kansas in 1857; located at Geneva, Allen County, remained till 1861; removed to Humboldt. From 1860 to 1865, was Sheriff of Allen County " In 1869 and 1870 he was a member of the Kansas Legislature. Was appointed Receiver of the United States Land Office in 1865, at Humboldt; held that appointment for three years. In 1870 he was appointed Receiver of the United States land office at Wichita; located at Wichita at that time; held that appointment for four years. In 1875 he engaged in merchandising; continued until 1881, then commenced a general commission business; located on Maine street near First. Is a member of the Masonic Fraternity, Wichita Lodge, No. 99, A., F & A. M., and also of Wichita Chapter No. 43."

The following obituary appeared in the Humboldt "Union" on April 29, 1904: "A Wichita dispatch tells of the death of J. C. Redfield at Cincinnati Wednesday, wither he had gone on a visit. J.C. Redfield came to Allen County i 1859 from Ohio and in 1860 was made sheriff, serving five years. In 1870 and 1871 he was Representative from this county. He and John Francis and T. S. Stover were the first class taken into the Humboldt Masonic lodge. Mr. Redfiel moved from Humboldt to Wichita where he took charge of the Land Office. Recently he resigned as County Commissioner of Sedgwick county to go to his old home in Ohio for a visit. Deceased was a brother of R. R. Redfield, of Humboldt."

A much more extensive obituary from the Wichita Daily Eagle is in the files Josiah Clark Redfield is buried in Hillside Cemetery, Wichita, Kansas. Records there indicate his cause of death as congestive heart failure.

Photograph and biographical sketch was presented to the Allen County Sheriff's Department on May 6, 1998, by the great-grandson of Josiah Clark Redfield.....me.[Downing.ged]

All historical and vital records found on Josiah Clark Redfield indicate the name as "J.C.Redfield"; even his grave marker. Apparently Josiah always went b his initials. The following entries are from Cutler's "History of Kansas", section on Allen County, Kansas: (Also, see notes under his wife, Hannah A. Nichols). The listing of all state legislators is available on the web site for the Kansas State Library. J.C. Redfield is also listed as a Kansas Pioneer on the University of Kansas web site. The 1891 Wichita City Directory lists him as "Justice of the Peace". On March 1, 1999, a copy of the book, "A History of the Humboldt, Kansas Community, 1855-1988" was obtained from the Humboldt Historical Society. Extensive biographical data on J.C. Redfield is in the book, as well as a photograph showing his Hardware store in 1870, and another showing a "Redfield Hardware" invoice. On June 8, 1999, I discovered that the death certificate of J.C. was on file with the Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society, Wichita. Certificate #21 for 1904; copy was obtained and is in the files.

General Notes for Child Richard Randolph Redfield

[18401.ged]

From Cutler's "History of Kansas", 1883: "RICHARD R. REDFIELD, dealer in musical merchandise, sewing machines, etc., was born at Twinsburg, Ohio, and was reared on a farm and in a saw mill. Some years later he moved to Coldwater, Michigan, where he was for two years employed in a photograph gallery. He then removed to Hillsdale. The subject of this sketch came to Humboldt (Allen County, Kansas) in the fal of 1866, and was for two years employed as a clerk in the mercantile business, after which he engaged in his present enterprise. He deals in all kinds of musical instruments, sewing machines, etc., and also teaches vocal and instrumental music."

The Civil War records of Richard R. Redfield were obtained on February 2, 1998. They show he enlisted in Co. "H", 177th Ohio Volunteers, on August 23, 1864, for a period of one year. He was discharged prior to that due to illness His description on the enlistment records show him (at 28 years old) to be 5' 6", light complexion, hazel eyes, "light" hair; occupation, "artist". See records in hard copy files.

The Pension file of Richard R. Redfield was obtained from the National Archives on February 26, 1998. His pension application states the following: "My right leg was broken six inches below the knee and my knee injured on June 1865 at Twinsburgh, Summit County, Ohio. My knee has been sore and painfu at times ever since, further the last few years it has been getting more painfu and lame, owing, I think, to my age and the Rheumatism with which I am troubled My left ankle was broken or dislocated in March 1880. I was thrown out of a buggy near Chanute, eight miles south of Humboldt, Kansas, by a runaway team. My left ankle was agin sprained or severly hurt 1882 by a nervous horse knockin me down and stepping on my ankle at Humboldt, Kansas. I have not been in the military or naval service since June 24th 1865."[Downing.ged]

Brother of Josiah Clark Redfield. From Cutler's "History of Kansas", 1883:

Richard has several references in the book, "A History of The Humboldt, Kansas, Community, 1855 - 1988", by Genivieve & Harold Choguill, 1988. Among the most interesting is the following:
"THE HUMBOLDT BAND
Richard R. Redfield came to Humboldt in late 1865 to clerk in his brother's hardware store. He had been a bandmaster during the Civil War, and after being detached he returned to his home in Ohio and then headed for Humboldt. Soon after arrival in 1866 he decided to organize a band. A number of the businessmen of the town were experienced musicians, and the townsmen raised $500 for instruments. The horns were Sutton horns, held with the bell pointing backward over the shoulder so that those marching might hear the music better.
"The personnel of the original band were R. R. Redfield, conductor an E flat cornet; Nick Platt, E Flat cornet; Dr. H. L. Dornberg, B Flat cornet; Martin Henrich, B Flat cornet; H. Holcomb, alto; Nick Kemmerer, tenor; William Scott, tenor; J.C. Redfield, baritone; Judge John Goodin, tuba; James Blythe, bass drum; and Severcool, snare drum.
"Band rehearsals were held in Judge Goodin's office in a "Shanghi" building on the southside of Bridge street between 7th and 8th streets in the front room upstairs.
"From 1867 to 1871 the bandstand was a pair of Fairbanks wagon scales at the southwest corner of the square. J.C.Redfield had moved his hardware store from the Shanghi building to the new brick building on the corner. The scales belonged to him and he let the band use it for a bandstand. He could tend store and play baritone in the band at the same time. If a load of hay came in for weighing, the bnd disbanded until the load passed, and then reassembled and continued whre it left off."

General Notes for Child Orrin Sylvanus Redfield

[18401.ged]

Orrin S. Redfield appears in the 1880 census for Allen County, Kansas, in the City of Humboldt. Hist occupation is listed as "Dry Goods Clerk". His first name is entered as "Orin" on that census. Copy in files, also copy o 1910 census taken just months before his death.

The Civil War records of Orrin S. Redfield were obtained from the National Archives on February 2, 1998. It shows he actually served about six months, an was discharged for "first taken sick at Camp Jenkins near (Somsville?) Kentucky with diarrhea. His duty was musician in the Regimental Band of the 21st Regiment, Ohio Volunteers." Refer to hard copy documents for further information.

Orrin S. Redfield's gravesite was visited by me on May 5, 1998. There is a minor conflict in the birth date: The Redfield book shows it as 1839, but the grave marker is dated 1838. Either could be correct.[Downing.ged]

Either could be correct, but based on information in the 1850 census for Summit co., OH, I am inclined toward the 1839 date. Interesting is the fact that while Orrin's two brothers and cousin (William) have rather thorough biographical listings in two Allen county historical books Orrin is not noted in either. (Cutler's "History of KS" and "History of Humboldt"). He is listed in the 1901/02 Humboldt City Directory as living at 10th Street and New York Avenue, Humboldt.
