Jonathan received land grants in Caroline and Albermarle Counties, Virginia, from his father.
In the Department of Archives, Virginia State Library, Richmond, Virginia, in File 21036, Miscellaneous Papers, File No. 13, H. 20, is the last will of Jonahan. "In the name of God Amen the ninth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and thirty four I Jonathan Clark of Drysdale parish in King and Queen County being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be to God and calling in mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is apointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say principally and first of all I give my soul to God trusting that through th(sic) mercy and the merits of Jesus Christ my Saviour to receive all pardon for all my Sins in this life Committed and be received into Eternal Bliss and my body to the Earth to be deasently buried at the descretion of my Ex'tors herafter mentioned and as touching Such wordly (sic) Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to Bless me I give and dispose of in manner and form following it is my will and desire that all my Just Debts and funeral charges be first paid out of my personal Estate. It is my will and desire that my loving wife Elizabeth Clark shall have the use and benefit of the land and Plantation whereon I now live During her natural (sic). Item, I give and bequeath unto my two sons John Clark and Benjamin Clark all that land whereon I now live to be equally divided between them after their mothers death to them and their heirs and assigns forever. Item, I give and bequeath unto my foresaid two sons Jonh Clark and Benjamin Clark all that tract or parcell of Land whereon my mother now liveth to be equally divided between them and their heirs and assigns forever. Item, I give and bequeath Likewise unto my aforesaid two sons John Clark and Benjamin Clark and to their heirs and assigns forever all that tract of Land which I lately took up in Goochland County on James River to be equally divided between. Item, I give and bequeath unto my loving wife Elizabeth Clark the one third part of all my personal Estate and negroes. Item, I give and bequeath all the residue of my personal Estate and negroes to be divided among my four Children John Clark, Ann Clark, Benjamin Clark and Elizabeth Clark so that my two daughters may have Twenth Shillings apeace more than my two sons. And I do hereby appoint my Loving wife Elizabeth Clark and my loving friend John Rogers my ex'tors of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking and disanuling all former wills by me made. Marked on the back of the foregoing will is "Jonathan Clarks Will A Copy for Rice Faucett" Also the following notation in a handwriting other than that of Robt. Pollark: "The land mentioned in this will John Clark one of the devisees contracted to sell to Samuel Faucett about the year 1762 who thereupon entered into possession".
Jonathan's son John was the father of George Rogers Clark and Jonathan Clark famous generals and father of son William of the famous Lewis and Clark expedition. (See Clark Royalty file for Johathan's royal ancestors.)
General Notes (Wife)
Elizabeth was a direct descendant of King Edward I of England and was a strong entity in her own right, who owned considerable land. She died in her son Benjamin's home in Lunenburg County.
General Notes for Child John Clark
According to the Millis/Clark families book by Fred Millis published in 1944, John came to Virginia from England and settled on the James River and he was married to a "red-headed Scotch lady". Sons Jonathan and George Rogers were famous Generals. The history books are full of their exploits and are worth the reading. Son William was co-leader of the famed Lewis & Clark expedition of 1804
General Notes for Child Benjamin Clark
The Fred Millis book states that Benjamin was probably born in Culpepper Co. Viginia (son John born in Culpepper), and that he first maried Elizabeth Lee and then L. Greene said to be the sister or General Greene. He had 29 sons and 2 daughters and was the uncle of General George Rogers Clark and William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Benjamin was well set financially probably because his father bequeathed him and his brother Johh, substantial land and funds. Benjamin then began acquiring land in Lunenburg County in 1764, there is a considerable record of him and his progency in those records. Apparently Benjamin then passed substantial funds to his children because son John was well off.
