Same dates of service listed. However, listing is for Andrew W. Gary. The Gary could easily have been a misprint for W. Source: "History of Morris County" 1882. Accessed via Genealogy.com
Note by Margaret Gary Hagood Brightwell: This is assumed to be our Andrew Nunn Gary. Photo in the possession of Nancy Pinckney Boyne, daughter of Nancy Patricia Gary Pinckney and copied here had note on the back listing Andrew N. Gary, Capt., Union Army. Perhaps there was a family myth that his rank was higher than what is listed from this source. Apparently, Andrew N. Gary was wounded and from the dates above one can reasonably assume that it was probably when his unit moved from their duty in the defenses of Washington toward Falmouth, VA or perhaps he was wounded in the defense of Washington, D.C. Prior to his discharge, one can see from the above that he would have fought in the famous Battle of Bull Run. From the same source listed above, there appears a Miller H. Gary listed as a Private in the Union Army, Company E, Seventh Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers. He was commissioned or enrolled on February 18, 1864; mustered in on the same day for a period of 3 years; Mustered out on June 3, 1865; was a Recruit; and was transferred from Co. A, 5h Reg; discharged at Campbell U.S. Army General Hospital, Washington, D.C., Tel. Ins., War Dept., A.G.O. Washington D. C., May 3, 1865. It is a logical assumption to believe that this was probably Andrew Nunn Gary's brother. Miller being his mother's maiden name. Andrew's son was, of course, Harry Miller Gary.
General Notes (Wife)
Mariana baptized October 5, 1845. Edingsville, Edisto Island, SC.
"All white families left Edisto Island in 1861 and remained refugees for the duration of the Civil War. The island was occupied for four years by units of the Federal army, whose officers used some of the abandoned but fully furnished houses as quarters. Many slaves were left behind by their refugee owners to fend for themselves, and some of them also occupied the vacant 'Big houses'. The island never suffered the systematic and intentional military destruction that was visited on other parts of South Carolina and Georgia near the end of the war." General Notes for Child Harry Miller Gary
Place of birth is shown as Shelbina Township, Shelby County, Missouri. The papers of Alice Gary Early showed Edisto Island, SC. He obviously lived in Shelbina, MO, as a young child because he is shown on the 1880 Census in above Shelbina. Source: Application papers for The National Society of Colonial Dames of America in The State of South Carolina for Mrs. Philip DuTart Pinckney, full maiden name: Nancy Patricia Gary.
1880 Census differs in the place of birth. It lists it as Missouri. The Edisto Island source came from Alice May Gary Early & it is unknown where her information came from. (MGHB/2002)
