Notes (Marriage)

Susan Jane Clark and Jospeh James Murray, M.D. were married in 1858 and had two children before he enlisted in 1861 as a surgeon in the Confederate Army. Four more children were born between 1866 and 1878, while the family struggled to reestablish themselves on the Island. Since 1867 Dr. Murray had tried farming 200 acres he owned on nearby Fenwick Island while he practiced medicine on Edisto Island. The white population of Edisto Island was too small, and its economy too shattered by the War, to support a physician on medical fees alone in the 1860's and 1870's. Moreover, the island actually had two doctors: Dr. Murray and his contemporary, Dr. Daniel Townsend Pope. The black population of the island was much larger, and some of them were treated by the two white doctors, but few black people during Reconstruction could afford to pay anything for their health care. In 1880 Susan Jane Clark was 44 and Jospeh James Murray was 50 years old. They apparently still did not own a farm that would support the family. the ancestral Murray plantation at Frampton's Inlet where Dr. Murray had grown up was now owned and farmed by his stepmother and her children. The Fenwick Island farm had not worked out, for whatever reasons. Mrs. Murray's brother-in-law Townsend Mikell apparently helped the struggling family in various ways. By 1880 the Murrays were living at "California," a Mikell property adjacent to "Sunnyside" and across the river from "Cypress Trees" (plantation). Against this background, Susan Jane Murray bought "Cypress Trees" in two parts. First, in February 1880, she purchased from the Presbyterian Church two parcels immediately west of "Cypress Trees," totalling 155 acres, for $1500. That included the tract commonly known as Baynard Gap which abuts the manse road and faces the Presbyterian Church across the public road. The 1880 purchase did something else very important: it gave "Cypress Trees" a deep water boat landing for the first time. The original plantation was bounded on the south and east by tidal creeks and marshes, but supplies coming to the farm, as well as bags of raw cotton to be ginned, probably had to be hauled by cart about two miles to and from the nearest deep water at Steamboat Landing. With the acquisition of Hauling Landing on St. Pierre's Creek, "Cypress Trees" overnight became a more efficient and profitable farm. A month later Susan Jane Murray acquired the old "Cypress Trees" house and plantation (now estimated at 289 acres) for $1,355 at a master in equity sale (public auction under court order). The sale apparently was forced by her father's sister Ann Mikell Clark, and by creditors of her father, Ephraim Mikell Clark. Many question remain unanswered about the transactions of 1880. Why did Ephraim Clark, if he was indeed the residual owner in 1880, allow "Cypress Trees" to go to public auction? He was a wealthy planter of Sea Island cotton, near the zenith of his career having won the first grand prize for his cotton exhibit at the Paris Exposition of 1876. If Dr. Joseph James Murray wanted to move to "Cypress Trees," why aren't the deeds in his own name? And if Dr. Murray couldn't afford this farm (as seems likely), where did his wife get the money to buy not only the old place but the adjoining tracts, which increased its size by a third? The answer to all these questions may be that Ephraim Clark, in effect, gave the farm to his daughter by giving her the money to buy it at auction, and to expand it by 35%. The new combined size on paper at least, was 444 acres. Dr. Murray moved his family to "Cypress Trees" almost immediately after the 1880 purchases, and the farm has been in the Murray family ever since. Dr. Murray himself died rather unexpectedly and without a will, a year later. But "Cypress Trees," at least, was not at risk. The deed was in his wife's name. Apparently the Murray family gradually prospered at "Cypress Trees: despite the death of Dr. Murray. Susan Jane was a strong woman, and she had grown sons. Willie, the oldest, was 22 when his father died; Ephie was 20, Lilla was 15, Girardeau was 9, Sallie was 5, and Jim was 3. As he grew older, it was Girardeau who eventually would take over farm management for his mother. Willie ran a general store, Ephie became a Presbyterian minister, Lill and Sallie married and moved away, and Jim clerked in another Island store. Susan Jane Murray had a garden in the front yard in the center of the two rows of sago palms. Her daughter-in-law, Mary Robertson Pope Murray maintained that garden for many years, and some flowers were still coming up there in 1990. There is also an iron ring in a live oak post by the river edge that was placed there sometime in the previous century, to tie up barges or launches. There is a clear and explicit tradition in the Murray family that Dr. Joseph James Murray had a medical consulting room or "office" in the space under the present dining room. The floor of this room was slightly below ground level and its only entrance was from the yard. Most white patients expected to be visited in their homes, but apparently black patients needing treatment would simply present themselves, and such a consulting room outside the family living quarters filled that need. Dr. Murray died in 1881, but his widow and children remained at "Cypress Trees." Life went on. The famous Charleston Earthquake of 1886 shook "Cypress Trees," which is 27 miles from the Battery as the seismic waves flowed. Apparently the damage was minor, but the widow Murray and her children were alarmed. Ten-year-old Sallie recalled years later that she was upstairs alone at night when the tremors struck. Her mother called up to her, "Put the lamp out and get downstairs." Then the whole family left "Cypress Trees" by boat and went across the river to join their relatives, the Townsend Mikells at "Sunnyside," and await whatever other horrors might befall. Served as President of Presbyterian College.

General Notes for Child John Girardeau Murray

By 1901 the children (of Dr. Murray and Susan Jane Clark Murray) were grown and three of them had married and moved away. The fourth child, John Girardeau Murray, was a bachelor living at home and managing the farm for his mother. The "new" house was now about 70 years old, and probably in need of some serious repair and modernization. The impetus for doing so apparently was Girardeau's decision in 1906 to marry and bring his bride, Mary Robertson Pope, to live at "Cypress Trees." In 1906 "Gerry" and " Mamie" Murray reshaped, reoriented and remodeled the house so completely that the family had to move out while the work was done. They lived in the cotton house during the construction. A Mr. Westcoat did a lot of the remodeling and painting inside and out. He lived near the old Post Office; he probably was also the Postmaster. They tore down all except the four rooms which are now the oldest part of the house: the dining room and kitchen and the two rooms directly above them. They added the east wing with a dining room on the main floor (where the living room is today) and a third upstairs bedroom above it, wit a new (third) chimney to heat the. They moved the kitchen to its present location and converted the old kitchen to a parlor, facing the driveway. They build the two downstairs bedrooms on the back (river side), and a bathroom with running water and flush toilet between the. They added the new wraparound porches on the south, east, and north sides, with the front steps and entrance now facing the driveway. They kept the original interior stairway with its graceful curved banister, but turned it 180 degrees so that once again it faced the front and opened into doors and the original porch railings, which are now on the front of the house. Marian Calhoun Murray (who did not join the family until almost 30 years later) was aware that there had been some controversy over all this remodeling. "Mrs. Murray was criticized for extravagance. The dining room was now at the opposite end of the house from the kitchen, but there were servants to carry the food and dishes back and forth, by the back hall. Girardeau Murray had his farm desk in the southeast corner of the dining room by the porch. On Friday afternoons the farm hands would come up on the porch and he would pay them, in cash, through the east window. Mary Murray Spencer and Sarh Murray Howle had mostly happy memories in 1994 of growing up in this large, modern, newly-renovated house. According to Mary, their parent's bedroom was the downstairs southeast room, next to the bathroom. The back bedroom downstairs was for the smallest child. "I can remember being in it, and later my older brother J.G. was in it temporarily when he was extremely ill, I think with typhoid fever. Upstairs, the girls' room was always the east room. J.G. had the small west room over the kitchen. The north bedroom was mainly for storage, and had beds for visiting children. The only bathroom we had was downstairs, but we were glad to have it. It was one of the first indoor bathrooms with running water and flush toilet on the island. There was still a privy on the bluff behind the cotton house, which was used mainly in the coldest weather, when the running water had to be turned off to protect the pipes from freezing. Water pressure was by gravity from an elevated tank across the yard. A black man pumped the tank full once a day from a well. "Occasionally, the water pressure would quit just as you were running water into the tub for a bath. that meant that the man responsible had not filled the storage tank that morning," Mary recalls. A pitcher pump mounted on a separate well across the yard provided drinking water, which was carried to the house by hand and kept in a cooler in the back hall at all times. "The water tasted good. It was from a deeper well."

When Susan Jane Clark Murray died in 1917, all six of her children apparently inherited equal shares of "Cypress Trees." Girardeau's five brothers and sisters sold their combined interest to him for $5,000 cash. This kept the farm together for another generation, while others on the Island were being divided among heirs. The first two decades of the Twentieth Century were, by most accounts, a prosperous time at "Cypress Trees" and on Edisto Island in general. Cotton was king again, and Sea Island long-staple cotton in particular was much in demand. By 1934 when Girardeau Murray died, the boll weevil and the Great Depression had drastically changed the economy of Edisto Island. But "Cypress Trees" was still a valuable and productive farm.
