He lived in a garriso n h ou se by Eel River, which was surprised by the Indian s o n a Su nday, March 18, 1676, while he was at church. Hi s wi fe, sev eral of his children, and some other persons, eleven in all, were kil l e d in this attack, which is said to have been the only s er io us one ever made on the settlement. A son of Willia m Cla rke , named Thomas, was left for dead, but afterward s recov ered . and had a silver plate put over his exposed brain, by the celebra t e d surgeon, Dr. John Clarke, of Boston. He was ever afte rw ar ds known as ÒSilver-headed TomÓ.



In July, 1676, two hundred Indians surrendered themselv e s t o the Plymouth Governer, and were pardoned, with th e ex cept ion of those who had been concerned in the slaugh ter a t Cla rke's garrison at Plymouth; these were put to d eat h Ñ Bayli esÔ History



The colony records give the names of these Indians, and s t a te that they were decapitated. 18
