"Wednesda y, th e s ixt h of De cember [1620]. It was resolved our di scover er s shou ld set f orth ... " ... t he 6 th of December [1 620] the y sent out thei r shallop a gain wit h ten of thei r principa l men and some s eamen, u pon furthe r discovery , intendin g to circulate tha t dee p bay of Cape C od. Th e weather wa s very cold and it f ro ze so hard as the s pra y of the se a lighting on their co a ts, they were as if t h ey had bee n glazed. Yet that nig ht b etimes they got dow n in to the b ottom of the bay, an d as th ey drew near th e shore t hey sa w some ten or twel ve Indian s very busy ab out somethin g. T hey landed abou t a league o r two from th em ... they ma d e themselve s a barricado wit h logs and bo ughs as well a s th ey coul d in the time, and s et out thei r sentinel an d betoo k th em to rest, and saw th e smoke o f the fire th e savage s m ade that night. When morn ing wa s come they div ided t heir co mpany, some to coast alo ng t he shore in th e boat , and the r est marched through th e w oods to see th e lan d, if any fit p lace might be for the i r dwelling. The y c ame also to the pla ce where they saw t h e Indians the n i ght before, and found t hey had been cut tin g up a grea t f ish like a grampus ... "S o they range d up a nd dow n all t hat day, but found no people , nor an y place t he y liked. W hen the sun grew low, they has ted o ut of th e w oods to mee t with their shallop ... of whi c h they we re ver y glad, fo r they had not seen each othe r al l tha t day sinc e the mor ning. So they made them a ba rrica d o as usually th ey did e very night, with logs, stak es a nd th ick pine bough s, th e height of a man, leaving i t o pen to le eward, partl y t o shelter them from the col d an d wind (makin g their fi r e in the middle and lying ro un d about it) and pa rtly t o de fend them from any sudde n a ssaults of the savages , i f the y should surround them ; s o being very weary, they b e took t hem to rest. But abo u t midnight they heard a hideo u s and g reat cry, and the i r sentinel called "Arm! arm!" S o t hey be stirred them a n d stood to their arms and shot of f a c oupl e of musket s , and then the noise ceased. They co nclude d i t was a c om pany of wolves or such like wild beas ts, fo r on e of t h e seamen told them he had often heard su ch nois e i n Ne wf oundland. "So they rested till about fiv e of th e cl o c k in the morning; for the tide, and their pu rpo s e t o g o from thence, made them be stirring betimes . S o a fter p ra yer they prepared for breakfast, and it b ein g da y dawni n g it was thought best to be carrying thi ngs d ow n to the b oa t ... "But presently, all on the su dden, t h ey heard a g rea t and strange cry, which they kn ew t o b e the same voice s th ey heard in the night, thoug h the y va ried their notes ; an d one of their company bei ng abr oad c ame running in an d cri ed, "Men, Indians! Ind ians! " And wi thal, their arrow s cam e flying amongst the m. The ir men ra n with all speed t o reco ver their arms , as by t he good pr ovidence of God the y did . In the mea ntime, o f those tha t were there ready, tw o musk ets wer e discharg ed at them , and two more stood read y in th e e ntrance o f their rende zvous but were commanded n ot to s h oot til l they could tak e full aim at them. And th e oth er tw o ch arged again wit h all speed, for there were o nl y four h a d arms there, an d defended the barricado, whi c h was fir st a ssaulted. Th e cry of the Indians was drea dful , espec ially w hen they s aw their men run out of th e rendez vou s toward th e shallo p to recover their arms , the India n s wheeling abou t upo n them. But some runnin g out with c oat s of mail on, an d c utlasses in their han ds, they soo n go t their arms and l e t fly amongst them a nd quickly st oppe d their violence . . . "Thus it please d God to vanqui sh the ir enemies and gi v e them deliveran ce; and by his s pecial p rovidence so t o dis pose that no t any one of the m were eith er hurt or hi t, thou gh thei r arrows came clos e by them an d on every si de [of] t hem ; and sundry of the ir coats, whic h hung up i n the barri c ado, were shot thro ugh and through . Afterward s they ga ve Go d solemn thank s and praise for th eir delive rance , and gathe red up a bu ndle of their arrow s and sen t the m into Englan d afterwar d by the master of th e ship , an d called that plac e the F IRST ENCOUNTER."
