General Notes for Child Nathaniel Clark
Nathaniel Clarke, of Plymouth, born 1643. He was educat e d i n the law office of Secretary Morton, and was know n a s Coun sellor Clarke. He was appointed Secretary of th e col ony b y Sir E. Andros in 1686, and shared in the unpo pulari ty o f that officer, so much so, that when Sir Edmund was sent to Englan d a s a p risoner, N. C. was sent with him. He soon, howeve r, r eturne d to Plymouth, a favorite with the Court of Eng land , and co ntinued the practice of law. His house was o n th e main stre et, the same afterwards occupied by Judge Thomas. Andros made him a gr a n t of Clark's Island, which the people refused to confir m , a nd he failed of securing the property.
He married Dorothy Lettice gray, widow of Edward Gray , a r i ch merchant of Plymouth, but they did not live toge ther c om fortably. and after much scandal she left him, bu t after war ds, says James Thacher, returned to live with h im. He d ie d without issue, Jan 31 1717, aged 74 17
General Notes for Child William Clark
William Clarke, son of Thomas, born 1639; married Sarah W o o lcot, of Plymouth March 1, 1659. He lived in a garriso n h ou se by Eel River, which was surprised by the Indian s o n a Su nday, March 18, 1676, while he was at church. Hi s wi fe, sev eral of his children, and some other persons, eleven in all, were kil l e d in this attack, which is said to have been the only s er io us one ever made on the settlement. A son of Willia m Cla rke , named Thomas, was left for dead, but afterward s recov ered . and had a silver plate put over his exposed brain, by the celebra t e d surgeon, Dr. John Clarke, of Boston. He was ever afte rw ar ds known as ÒSilver-headed TomÓ.
In July, 1676, two hundred Indians surrendered themselv e s t o the Plymouth Governer, and were pardoned, with th e ex cept ion of those who had been concerned in the slaugh ter a t Cla rke's garrison at Plymouth; these were put to d eat h Ñ Bayli esÔ History
The colony records give the names of these Indians, and s t a te that they were decapitated. 18

Andrew Clark of Plymouth, son of Thomas Clarke, born 16 3 5 . Clarke removed to Boston, and married Mehitabel, daug ht e r of Thomas Scotto. He lived in Scotto's Lane where hi s f at her bought him a house and he carried on the shoe bu sine ss . He was Assistant Counsellor and several times Representative t o t h e General Court. Finallty he removed to Harwich, of w hic h t own he and his father were among the original propr ieto rs , in 1694. He died there in 1706.
