General Notes for Child Columbus Lafayette Hollingsworth
Captain Columbus Lafayette Hollingsworth, a prominent citizenofPickens, B.C., was born on a farm about ten miles south of thisplace,November 14, 1836. He is of English descent, of theQuakerpersuasion. His father was James I. Hollingsworth, a native ofUnioncounty, S. C., and a farmer by occupation. His mother's maidennamewas Cynthia Clayton, a native of Pickens county and a daughterofStephen Clayton, a farmer and son of William Clayton, a Virginian,whocame to South Carolina in the latter part of the last century.Shedied in 1889 at the age of seventy-six. Capt. Hollingsworth'sfatherserved both as major and lieutenant-colonel in the SouthCarolinamilitia. He died in 1879. He was the son of EnochHollingsworth, whocame to South Carolina from Virginia. The founderof the Americanbranch of the family was Valentine Hollingsworth, whocame to thiscountry with William Penn, on the ship Welcome, in 1682.ValentineHollingsworth had three sons, one of whom was SamuelHollingsworth. Ason of Samuel, whose Christian name was Enoch, wasthe father of Capt.Hollingsworth's grandfather; whose Christian name,as has been beforestated, was also Enoch. Capt. Hollingsworth, thepresentrepresentative of the family, was reared on a farm in Pickenscounty,and received an academic education, his last teacher being theRev. J.L. Kennedy. At the age of twenty he took up the vocation ofateacher, which he followed for about seven years. In the latterpartof 1864 he entered the Confederate army, enlisting with Company I,ofthe Fifth regiment of the South Carolina reserves, of which companyheheld the command from the time of his enlistment until the closeofthe war. After that period he began the study of law under judgeJ.J. Norton, of Walhalla. Upon being admitted to the bar heenteredupon the practice of his profession at Pickens, where he haseversince continued to practice. Aside from his law practice he hasgivenmuch attention to farming and trading, and in the pursuit-oftheseseveral callings he has accumulated a large estate. He isastockholder and director of the Easley banking company. Inpoliticshe is a democrat. He is an elder in the Presbyterian church,and amember of the Masonic fraternity. Capt. Hollingsworth wasmarried in1859, to Miss Melinda A. McWhorter, of Pickens County. Theyhave fivechildren living, four of whom are daughters.
