Ida Ditmar came from an Old American Family. Jan Jansen Ditmarsen came from the Ditmarsen area, which is now in Germany, but then belonged to Denmark. In 1637, they settled in a farm in what is now the Queens section of New York City.

William T. Cline remained with his parents on the farm until 24 years of age, at which time, at which time, in 1850, he married Juliann Matthew, the daughter of John Matthew, an old settler in Clinton County. For a short time after their marriage, they lived in Fayette Co., Ohio then settled in Clinton County. His family was afflicted with much sickness which resulted in the death of his wife and three of their children.
