A John Harrington, husband of Ann or Elizabeth Clinton, who drowned inBoston Harbor in 1630/1 is sometimes claimed to be son of Sir JohnHarington of Kelston (e.g. 1,2). This is not considered likely (e.g. 3)and this link is not considered sound. The immigration of someone so prominent as a son ofthe Godson of Queen Elizabeth (4) would have likely been noted (3) bycontemporary sources. The immigration of this family was not.Furthermore, while John Harington of Kelston did have a son John, this son John married Dionysia Leigh andremained in England (5).

Claims have been made for four children in this family (e.g.1,2), thesebeing, Benjamin Herendeen of Providence, Robert Harrington of Watertownand Abraham and Rebecca Errington of Cambridge and Charlestown. Thelatter three of these have clearly been shown to be children in different families (3.6).

If this individual indeed existed, he appears to have immigrated with asingle surviving child, Benjamin of Providence, and possibly a wife, whoif she hadn't died prior to his immigration, must have died so soon afterhis supposed drowning as to not appear in any meaningful way in written records onthis side of the Atlantic. Most of what is claimed for Ann ClintonHarrington is due to confusion with widow Ann Liddell Errington, from anentirely different family, who is the mother of the Abraham and Rebecca noted above (6).

She is also claimed to be Ann or "Widow" Errington (1). Whoever themother of Benjamin Herendeen turns out to be, she is NOT the daughter ofThomas Clinton (or Fiennes), 3rd Earl of Lincoln as is sometimes claimed(eg. 2,3). The immigration of someone so prominent would have been noted (4) as were theimmigrations of two other daughters, Susan and Arbella, of Earl Thomas(4,5). Furthermore, Ann Clinton, dau. of Earl Thomas, is noted to havedied young (6) and she is apparently not mentioned in his will (5). He died in 1618, well beforeAnn Clinton Harrington's reported death at Charlestown, MA, in 1653. Theother daughter sometimes named as John Harrington's wife is Elizabeth(4), who married John Beresford (5,6), not John Harrington.

Most of what is claimed for Ann Clinton Harrington is due to confusionwith widow Ann Liddell Errington, from an entirely different family (7).If an Ann Clinton Harrington, mother of Benjamin Herendeen of Providence[her three other supposed children have been shown to be from different families (4,7)],did indeed exist, she must have died prior to the immigration of herhusband and son or so soon afterwards so as to escape any mention in theearly records of Charlestown.

General Notes for Child Benjamin Herendeen

will presented for probate 4Apr1688 AKA Benjamin Hearnden, Benjamin, Hearndale, Benjamin Harrington, etc.He was in Lynn, MA, in 1647 and removed to Providence shortly afterwards(1). He owned a house and farm of 25 acres, located near the corner ofNorth Main St. and what was then called Harrington Lane, now Rochambeau Ave. Part of his farm isnow part of the North Burying Ground (2). His will was presented forprobate 4/4/1688.

It has been frequently claimed that he was the son of immigrants JohnHarrington and his wife Ann Clinton (see 3 and references therein), whoare in turn claimed to be the son of Sir John Harington of Kelston (e.g.4,5) the daughter of Thomas Clinton, otherwise Fiennes, 3rd Earl of Lincoln (4,5),respectively. These latter two links are not considered likely (e.g. 6 -see also write-ups of his parents herein).

Lastly it should be noted that there is NO evidence connecting BenjaminHerendeen to Robert Harrington of Watertown or Abraham and RebeccaErrington as is also sometimes claimed (e.g. 3,4). These persons havebeen shown to be children in other families with no siblings named Benjamin (6,7). Nevertheless thereare hearsay claims that some of the first couple of generations of thedescendants of Benjamin and Robert may have considered themselves cousinsof some sort (8).

1st I give and bequeath to my wife Mary Whitted to hold use for the the term of her natural life the section of the Lot No. 25 i n the town of Hillsborough wherupon I now live West of a line be ginning .. & a point on King Street equally distant from my ... said street formerly called "the Blue House".................... ................................................ ............... ......................... all the buildings houses & improvement s therein_____

4th to my duaghter Eliza J. Fifty shares of the capitol stock belonging to me in the Bannk of New Bern & ten shares of t he capitol stock belonging to me in the Bank of Cape Fear to be divided equally between them & to hold the said land & stock to them & their heirs should...my said two grand children die under the.age of twenty one years & without having been married, then his or her share and money of the whole of the property both re al and personal which they shall take or hold under this my will shalt survive to, ....in the survivor of them with the exceptio n however of the bank stock which I have herein willed to them a nd those ten shares last mentioned ....I give to their mother At telia Whitted and that both of my said grandchildren die under t he age of twenty one years and without having been married then my will is to selll the property both real & personal belonging to them & claimed & held under this ......upon such decease..... ...in & belong equally to my wife Mary, my son William Henry Whi tted and my daughter Eliza Jane Whitted with the further execept ion however .... ten shares more of the aforesaid Bank stock her ein willed to them my said grandchildren which said last mention ed reserved ten .....upon the death of both of my said grandchil dren under the age of twenty one years & without having been mar ried...aforesaid, I give to their mother Attelia Whitted having twenty five shares of their bank stock to be equally divided bet ween my wife Mary and my son William Henry Whitted my daughter E liza J. Whitted. ___

6th. To Attelia Whitted, widow of my son James Whitted dead I gi ve & bequeath ten shares of the capitol stock belonging to me in the bank of Cape Fear. This bequeast of ten shares is to be cer tain & independant of the contingency mentioned in the fifth cla use hereof. I also, give her the said Attelia Whitted the sum of one hundred dollars to be paid her immediately out of the monie s on hand & should there not be enough money on hand for that pu rpose, my executor will raise & pay to her the said sum of one h undred dollars as soon after my death as practical---

7th I give & bequeath the remainder estate in Lot No. 9 aforesai d in which my wife Mary holds a life estate to my son William He nry Whitted my daughter Eliza J. Whitted & two grandchildren afo resaid allowing to said grandchildren the share thereof which th eir father would have taken if living, their share however to be subject to the provisions & limitations contained in the fifth clause of this my will in case of the death of one or both of th em under the age of twenty one years or without having been marr ied. The life estate herein of my wife Mary to be determined by her death before my said children & grandchildren shall take ... ..thereof......

8th. The other property & monies which I am entitled to under th e will of my said brother Jehu Whitted died will be equally divi ded between my wife Mary, my son William Henry Whitted, my daugh ter Eliza J. Whitted & my grandchildren aforesaid allowing them to share thereof, which their father if living would have been e ntitled to, and their share thereof to be subject to the provisi ons & limitations contained in the fifth clause of this my will in case of the death of one or of both of them under the age of twenty one years and without having been married. The negro man Jack who I hold & claim under the will aforesaid of my brother J ehu Whitted died I will my executor to sell upon reasonable .... .... arising from the sale to divide as and before in this claus e, the share of my grand-children aforesaid to be subject to the provisions & limitations contained & set forth in the fifth cla use of this my will. __ I wish however my title to said Jake & t o said monies & property to ..... before the sale of said Jake a nd division of said property & monies.

9th My father bequeathed to me a boy named Dick to .... until th e year 1820 & then to be emancipated. This said boy Dick is now in the possession of Thomas Holden and has been hired to him unt il the year 1825. When that period arrives, my executor will end eavor to carry my father's will in respect Dick into ....., but they are not to give any security for his good behavior so as to under any part of my estate be able in case of his misbehaviour if the court shall refuse to emancipate the said Dick then my E xecutor must sell or cause him to be sold and divide the money a rising from the sale, or my part of it provided I be not entitle d to the whole, & equally among my wife Mary, my son William Hen ry Whitted, my daughter Eliza J. Whitted, & my two grandchildren allowing to them the share of thier father if he was living & t herein then I have thereof of to be subject to the provisions & limitations contained & set forth in the fifth clause hereof in case of the death of one or both of them under the age of twenty one years & without having been married. 10th the negros & property which are not herein already disposed of & which I do not hold or claim under the will of my said bro ther Jehu Whitted died my executor will publicly sell upon a rea sonable audit; & the money arising from & the debts due me & the money on hand at my decease after paying my wife Mary two hundr ed dollars and Attelia Whitted one hundred dollars as herein bef ore directed in the first & sixth.clause of this my will, will c onstitute a fund to...all just claims and demands upon my estate . After paying my just debts therefrom, my executor will hold in ....hands the balance of the said fund until the such in equity instituted by Josiah Turner as adms of Anne Whitted died agains t the executor of her father shall be determined and until all o ther debts in law & equity hereafter to be instituted within a r easonable time against the executor of Jehu Whitted died or agai nst me or my representatives on account of the estate of the sai d Anne Whitted or the estate of her father shall be finally adju dged & determined - out of the aforesaid fund contained in their hands my executor will, according to his good & sound discretio n pay & discharge my share of the cost ..., charges & expenses i n employing able council in attending to & defending in said ... .such & if necessary to pay off & discharge my share of any judg ment or judgments, decree or decrees or shares & costs that may be obtained against them as my executors & against the other exe cutor of Jehu Whitted died or I any other will against my estate . Having myself had the actual management of the monies belongin g to said Anne Whitted died my executor will be prompt in paying off all just claims against me on her account, and in no ...to suffer my brother Levi Whitted the other executor of my brother Jehu Whitted died to sustain any ...for any acts of mine, but th ey are to make good the bonds which I have taken & held as execu tor or guardian of that estate: On condition however that ..my b rother Levi Whitted shall grant no longer .....on said bonds and shall forthwith proceed to collect and enforce payment upon all bonds so taken & held by me and when said such or ...shall be f inally adjudged & determined & the judgments or decrees & costs should these be such against them, fully paid, my executor will divide the surplus if any, equally between my wife Mary, my son William Henry Whitted, my daughter Eliza J. Whitted & my two gra nd children leaving them the said grandchildren thier share whic h their father would take were he living & their said shares the reof to be subject to the provisions & limitations contained & s et forth as aforesaid in the fifth clause of this my will in cas e of the death of one or both of them under the age of twenty on e years or without having been married.
