Clive (of Plassey), Robert Clive, Baron
Sex: Male Life: (1725-74) Soldier and administrator in India, born in Styche, Shropshire. In 1743 he joined the East India Company, and took part in the campaigns against the French. During the Indian Mutiny, he recaptured Calcutta in January 1757, and in June defeated a large Indian-French force at Plassey. For three years he was sole ruler in all but name of Bengal. In 1760, he returned to England, entered parliament, and was made a baron (1762). In 1765 he returned to Calcutta, effectively reformed the civil service, and re-established military discipline. His measures were seen as drastic, and he became the subject of a select committee enquiry upon his return to England in 1767.
