General Notes (Husband)
While for nearly fifteen years William C. Cobb has beenthemanager and superintendent of the Ware Shoals Cotton Mills, heachieved that important responsibility and a place among theprominentcotton mill men of the state only as a result of many yearsoffaithful and efficient toil, beginning in the very lowest ranksandcoming up step by step on the basis of merit and growing qualitiesofexecutive leadership.
Mr. Cobb is a native of South Carolina and was born fourmilessouth of Belton in Anderson County November 4, 1862, son F. W.andLaura (West) Cobb. When he was seven years of age the familyremovedto Banks Count, Georgia, where he lived on a farm, did work inthefields and attended country schools in limited sessions. At theageof seventeen he went to work as a track hand on the NortheastRailroadbetween Athens and Lula, Georgia. In a short time he was madeforemanof the section and work train, and continued as such until henet anaccidental injury and broke his leg. After being able to walkheattended a school near Pendleton under Mrs. Rebecca Douthit, andhecredits her with most of the real education he has acquired, especially in mathematics and spelling.
Since October, 1882, when he engaged as a weaver in thePiedmontmills, Mr. Cobb has been wholly absorbed in the cotton millindustry. On July 4, 1883, he changed his job, going, as he says, "withthegenerous, big-hearted Captain Smyth as a common weaver". October14,1884, he was promoted from weaver to the duties described as"striker", and October 14, 1886, two years later, was promoted tosection hand, and after another two years was made second hand in theweave room,June 9, 1890, he was promoted to overseer of weaving inMills Nos. 1,2, and 3, comprising over 1,500 looms. Thisresponsibility he heldfor nearly six years. January 16, 1896, he wastransferred to MillNo. 4 to start the operation of the first sheetinglooms the DraperCompany ever put on the market. March 1, 1900, hebecamesuperintendent at Belton and conducted the mill there untilSeptember10, 1905, when he resigned, and on the 18th of Septemberentered uponhis duties as manager and superintendent of Ware ShoalsMills. Thisis one of the model plants in upper Soth Carolina, and themillvillage and the entire community comprise one of the "high lights"inthe industrial situation of the South. In the upbuilding of themillsand in the creation of the community Mr. Cobb shared with Mr.J.F.MacEnroe and others the credit for this reallydistinctiveachievement.
Mr. Cobb is widely know among cotton mill managers and isanexceedingly popular citizen in his home community. He is aKnightTemplar Mason and Shriner.
