#59. The Augustan. Ivan IV Basilivich Groznii (the Awe-Inspiring [the "Terrible"] (1533-1584). A monor at his accession, Ivan was for some years maltreated by his guardians (who else?) the Shuiskys. In 1543, when he was 13, Ivan seized power and fed Andrei Shuisky to his hounds. That is about the only tactic which works with a Shuisky. Ivan was crowne Tsar in 1547. His early reign was filled with governmental reforms, including the Boyar Duma's relegation to a less important position (1547) and the creation of the Zemakiy Sobor, the convocation of "All the Land", a body of fluctuating membership and poorly defined duties. It played a key role in resolving the upcoming "Time of Troubles" and then committed suicide by paving the way for the establishment of an untrammeled Romanov despotism.

Flanders was inhabited by Celts in the 1st century BC and conquered by Germanic tribes in the next several hundred years, finally becoming a part of the empire established by Charlemagne in the 9th century AD. About 862 Baldwin I , son-in-law of the Carolingian emperor Charles the Bald (later Charles II, Holy Roman emperor), was created the first count of Flanders. Under Baldwin I and Baldwin II , Flanders was made secure against the incursions of the Vikings. In the early part of the 10th century, Baldwin II I laid the basis for the industrial and commercial greatness of the region by establishing the wool and silk industries at Ghent and instituting annual fairs at Brugge (Bruges), Ieper and other towns.
