General Notes (Husband)
John Culpeper the Merchant By Bill Russell
I would like to [offer] some theories that I have abo u t J o h n Culpeper (of Lancaster) the merchant.
First, John was clearly a ship owner with business inte r e s t s throughout the colonies. He had been away from En gl a n d fo r some time when he returned to protect his bro the r s e stat e in 1651. Their interests were probably mor e en ta ngle d tha n just their common ownership of the Tho mas a n d John . It wo uld appear that they may have owne d a trad in g compa ny wit h points of presence in England , Barbados , N ew Engla nd, an d Virginia. Indeed, John pro bably had s on s or sons-i n-law i n those places to carr y out their tr adi ng business . I suspe ct that Hannah wh o married Edwar d Fri sbie and Sus annah wh o married Franc is Lindley wer e both d aughters. Edw ard Frisb ie was fro m another promin ent merch ant trading fa mily in No rfol k County, VA and re moved to N ew England. Fra ncis Lindl e y ended up in New Je rsey afte r having lived i n New Eng land . I also believe t he John Cu lpeper "the Carol ina Re bel" wa s a son of Joh n the merchan t.
Second, John the Merchant was also John the lawye r , a f a c t we sometimes overlook and which may go some w ay s to u nr av eling some of the confusion over the variou s J ohns. J oh n th e Merchant was at the Middle Temple a s wa s his brot he r Thom as. More importantly, he was ther e a t the same ti m e as Gov . Sir William Berkeley. I beli ev e that it was Jo h n the Merc hant who represented the l ega l interests of Fr an ces Culpepe r Stephens Berkeley be for e the courts in Nor t h Carolina an d who attested to B erke ley's signature on t h e deed to Roano ke Island in Ne w Eng land. Who better to e nt rust to such a j ob than th e Gover nor's wife's uncle , a law yer who owned a s hip ab le to tr avel to North Carol ina an d New England on sho r t notice a nd who personally kn ew th e Governor. He mak e s a more log ical candidate for th e jo b than the relati ve yo ung "Caro lina Rebel" who had n o lega l training an d may no t have e ven reached North Caro lina b y the tim e in question.
Third, John the Merchant had known trading interest s a n d p r esence in New England and Barbados. Charleston , S C wa s se tt led originally by groups from both place s an d it i s poss ibl e the John the Rebel was his father' s rep resenta tive i n tho se areas. Culpeper's Rebellion i n Nort h Caroli na - re ally A lbemarle -, was fomented b y New Eng land merc hant tra ders. I f John the Merchant ha ndled th e sale of Ro anoke Isl and fo r Governor Berkeley , it is cl ear that th e Lamb famil y who p urchased it wer e friends o f Sarah Mayo , John the Re bel's wi fe. From th e records i t would appea r that John th e Rebel ar rived i n Albemarl e after the Joh n Culpeper who w as in cour t i n the sale o f the property , yet the later buy ers were w e ll familia r with John the R ebel's family. The L amb fam ily w ho boug ht Roanoke Islan d were also New Englan d mer chant tra der s who maintaine d a family presence in th e A lbemarle reg i on of North Caro lina. The above is partly theory based upon available rec o r d s . I believe that John the Merchant was the fathe r o f Ha nn a h and Susannah of New England, Henry of Virgi nia , an d Jo h n the Rebel. He may also have been the fath er o f som e o f th e Barbados Culpepers.

The London of that time was as gay and alluring to y o u t h s as that profligate age could make it; vulgarity , vi c e a n d crime were countenanced and even encouraged . Und e r the s e circumstances the young man who chose hi s compa n y fr o m a persecuted and derided, but devoutly r eligiou s s ect , sh owed a strong and noble character.
Surrounded by oppression, and perhaps disowned by hi s f a t h er, it is not strange that such a spirit should w is h t o b re athe a freer air, should brave the dreaded oc ea n an d joi n t he Puritan settlers in the wilds of Ameri ca.
The facts given show the high standard he maintain e d i n h i s adopted home. With advantages of family and e du cati o n h e seems to have united a most liberal disrega r d of h i s ow n personal interests, to the advantage of t h e colon y , to wh ose service he devoted much of his lif e . The colo ni sts need ed just such men; and the many an d c onspicuou s tru sts place d in his hands show that he w as f aithful t o them.
He was a merchant nearly all his life, at times he m u s t h a ve been successful as numerous land transaction s a n d oth e r evidences indicate. But at his death, his e sta t e was ve r y small; he must have divided the most o f hi s pr operty am on g his children before his death, a s his c onvey ance to hi s s on Joseph would indicate. He d ied at t he hom e of his on ly d aughter. The only books me ntioned a mong hi s personal e ffect s, "a Bible in Qto" an d "Clark' s Martyro logie," ar e a comme ntary upon his lif e.
He lived in an age of wonderful changes, and his w a s a l o n g and eventful career. If it could be reviewe d b y us i n a l l its strong lights and shades, it would b e mo re inte rest in g than the most fascinating tale of fi ction.
He was the emigrant ancestor of all the Bartholome w s o f t h is family in the United States, and it is hope d t ha t know le dge of his force of character and sterlin g wor t h may enc our age some of his weaker descendants t o be mo r e worthy o f s o noble a sire.
Mrs. Anna is first mentioned in the records by tha t n a m e , in 1653, but was probably his only wife. She i s sup po s e d to have been the sister of Robert Lord,(*) a s th e lat te r , in a letter recorded, calls William Barth olome w, "br oth er ," and the relation could not have bee n throu gh Robe rt L ord 's wife, as the names and intermar riages o f her fa mil y ar e well known.
She may have also held that relation to Edward Bro w n o r h i s wife Faith, as Edward Brown in his will in 16 59 , al so m en tions his "brother Bartholomew."
William Bartholomew's house, in Ipswich, was between R o b e r t Lord's on the east and Edward Brown's on the west.

General Notes for Child Robert Colepeper
Robert Culpepper came to Virginia in August 1664, or so m e t i me prior. Robert must have sold his headright, as on 24 A u g u s t 1664, Mr. Richard Webley, [Captain] Robert Davis, and Thomas Fres h w a t er, claimed Robert's headright of 50 acres (along with144 other hea d r i g hts) and were granted land in Rappahannock and Northumberland Co u n t i es. Cavaliers and Pioneers, Vol. I, p. 430 . This writer feels that this was probably a son of Joh n C u l p eper, born 1606, son of John Culpeper and Ursula Woodcock . A n d t h at he was the uncle of the Robert Culpepper who left a will in No r f o l k County, VA, in 1743. This latter Robert was probably born in Vi r g i n ia, and it seems unlikely that he would have been traveling from a b r o a d as a small infant. . As with his probable brothers, Dennis, and James, no further record has been found of this Robert. He may have die d y o u n g, or may have returned to England, or to Barbados.

General Notes (Husband)
Richard and Nicholas, under somewhat romantic circumst a n c e s, married Margaret and Elizabeth Wakehurst, (grand da ug ht e rs and co-heiresses of Richard Wakehurst, sen. , o f Wak ehu rs t, in Ardingly). These two girls were conf ide d by El izab eth , their grandmother, Thomas Echyngham , Tho mas Hoo , Joh n Gay nesford and William Gaynesford, t heir g uardians , to t he car e of John Colepeper and Agnes , his w ife, th e forme r of who m "promysed on the faith e and trou the of h is body e and as h e was a gentylman, " that they s hould no t be wron ged. In spi te of this pro mise, however , he, wit h Richard a nd Nichola s his brethr en, "with forc e and arme s riotousl y agense th e Kynges p eas arayed in t he manr o f warre at Go utherst tok e and c aried" them awa y to Bobbin g, Alexander C lifford's pl ac e in Kent, and af terwards tra nsported them t o Londo n t o a place of John G ibson, "the s eide Margarete a nd E lizabet h at the tyme o f their takyn g away makyng gre t e and pittiou s lamentacio n and wepyng."
This high-handed proceeding on the part of the two fo r t u n e hunting brothers was productive of much litigati o n , a s El izabeth Wakehurst, grandmother of the two heir es se s, r efuse d to resign the title deeds of their estat es , an d i t was so me time before a peaceable settlemen t wa s obta ined . Richar d died without issue, but Nichola s bec ame th e ance stor of t he Colepepers of Wakehurst, a nd a s the bra ss to h im and hi s wife Elizabeth in Arding ly Ch urch show s ten son s and eigh t daughters, we may co nclud e that the y lived lon g and happi ly together. [Th e famou s herbalist , Dr. Nichola s Culpeper , was the grea t-grands on of this N icholas].

General Notes (Husband)
