General Notes (Husband)

Thus far, the earliest records for any Archdale CO M B S i n t he Colonies are found in Stafford County, Virgi n i a in 1 665 , and believed to be (although not yet docum en te d) thos e o f Archdale COMBS of Old Rappahannock. I n on e in stance , hi s suit against a Mr. William BROWN i s dism issed ; and i n th e other he sits on a jury (Staffo rd Co V A OB , 1664-166 8). T he latter would indicate tha t Archdal e wa s a landowne r, bu t the only 17th century C OMBS Lan d Recor d found in St affor d is for a 1688 mentio n of an A rchibal d COMBS whom (a gain n ot yet documented) , we belie ve to ha ve probably bee n Archda le, in part be cause no ot her recor d for an Archiba ld has be en found , but also bec ause the a bbreviation for b oth give n name s was "Archd. " and thus ea sily confused by c ourt cler ks . (Stafford DB P:98-101)

The 1665 Stafford Co, VA Court Records for Archdal e w e r e i n Apr - Aug 1665, and later that same year, o n 19 O c t 1 66 5 in Old Rappahannock Co, VA, Archdale COMB S and J os ep h OKA NE witnessed the deed of James COGHIL L to Joh n SPE E D (Old R appa D&W 5:208)

Archdale COMBS continued to appear in the record s o f O l d R appahannock sporadically over the next almos t twe nt y ye ars , usually as a witness, and at some poin t betwe e n the y ear s 1662 and 1666, Archdale COMBS of Ol d Rapp a ma rried El izab eth, widow of Col. Wm. UNDERWOOD , and ap paren tly previ ous t o that(?) also the widow o f a second , earli er unident ifie d UNDERWOOD by whom sh e appears t o have ha d a son, Wil lia m UNDERWOOD, Jr. (Se e Also COMBS /UNDERWOO D &c Familie s & (C OMBS) Elizabet h & Col. Wm. UN DERWOOD).

On 7 Jun 1666, Archdall COMBE gifted his "sone in La w " W i l liam UNDERWOOD, Jr. 2 cows, a heifer and 1500 pd s . of " go o d sound Tobacco" to be in the care of Archda l l COMBE h ims el f until "the donee come of age to chus e hi m a guardi an. " (O ld Rappa. DB 3:93-94)

Note that in Colonial times, the phrase son-in-law w a s c o m monly used to denote step-son, the son of one's w i f e b y a n earlier marriage. Likewise, at that time, Jun i o r wa s no t necessarily the son of a Senior, but ofte n me an t onl y tha t there were two individuals of the sam e nam e i n th e same a rea and/or family, with Junior an d Senio r syn onym s for Youn ger and Elder. In the above i nstance , the J unio r identifie s this William UNDERWOOD a s the so n of Eli zabet h, the relic t of Col. Wm. UNDERWOO D who wa s afterwar d th e wife of Archd ale COMBS. We kno w that Wil liam UNDERW OOD , Jr. above was un der fourtee n years of ag e since he w as n ot yet of an age t o "chus e him a Guardia n." William U NDERW OOD, Jr., born 1652 -16 66, is often con fused in the r ecord s of Old Rappahanno c k and its descend ant county, Ric hmond , with his step-b rothe r, William UND ERWOOD, Sr., bor n 1648 /9, son of Col . Wm. UND ERWOOD an d his earlier wife , Mary ( MOSELEY? BU RTON?).

William UNDERWOOD, Jr., however, was probably no t t h e s o n of Col. Wm. UNDERWOOD - not unless we accep t tha t t he C ol onel had two sons named William UNDERWOO D - th e eld e r a Sen ior, born 1648/9, the son of the Col onel b y his e ar lier wif e, Mary (MOSELEY? BURTON?), an d the you nger a J uni or, bor n 1652-1666, son of his las t wife, Eli zabeth, w ho w as appar ently the widow of tw o UNDERWOODS , and possib ly ev en two Wi lliam UNDERWOODS.

The next mention found of Archdale COMBS in the rec o r d s o f Old Rappa. is ca 1667 (record refers to an unam e d s er van t purchased of Archdall) and in 1668, we fin d hi m fo r t he f irst time as a property owner, as is sho wn b y a se rie s of r ecords that also link Archdale COMB S t o a probab le n ear rel ative, Abraham COMBS (See Abrah am C OMBS of Ol d Rapp a VA & S t. Mary's MD).

A deed for the property dated 1 Dec 1666, and prov e d 2 8 S e p 1668, from Rorah MACRAH to James COGHILL (la n d boug h t o f Wm. GIBSON), was witnessed by Abraham COOM B E and R o : PAYN E. The following year, in a deed date d 1 8 Dec 166 7 , and pro ved 14 Feb 1667/8, James COGHIL L sol d the prope rt y to Archd all COMBE (Old Rap Co., V a DB Par t I of 1668- 167 0:29-30), b ut on the same date i t was pro ved, 14 Feb 1 667/ 8, Archdal l COMBE sold the pr operty t o Francis TRIPLE TT wh o in turn s old the land t o Francis

STERNE, husband of Mary CAMMOCK, d/o Warwick and Marg a r e t ( WILLIAMS?) (Thatcher) Cammock. In a 1718 Esse x C o V A de ed d ated 17 Aug 1718, Isaac and Mary [CAMMOC K Ste rn ] TRIC K of S itting Bourne Parish, Co of Essex, d eede d thi s lan d to Davi d STERN (Mary's son by Francis , the p ropert y desc ribed as " 150 acres in St. Mary's Pa rish, o n the so uth sid e of Pumen s End Swamp bounded b y land o f John COMB S deceas ed to corne r of William CAMM OCK" (s/ o Mary and gs /o of War wick and Mar garet (WILLIA MS?) (Tha tcher) Cammock ).

The only other record found thus far in reference to A r c h d ale COMBS owning property in Old Rappahannock was r ec or d e d 7 Feb 1667/68, and dated 5 Mar 1667/8: "Archida l l COM B E o f Rappa. Co., Gent." secured a debt to John B RA DFORT H o f Ol d Rappa., a miller, with "200 acres known e b y th e nam e of T HE FORREST with all Houses belonging. as a lso " the do wry o f my now Wife Elizabeth." (Old Rap . Co. , Va. D B 3:362 -363 ) Note: Another record indicate s BRADF ORTH wa s actuall y BRA DFORD (See Below).

The above record provides another possible "clue" wi t h i t ' s reference to Elizabeth as "my now wife." This w a s a p hr as e often used to indicate that there had be e n a prio r mar ria ge, and it is believed probable, base d o n both El izabet h' s prior marriages and the above rec ord , that thei rs wa s no t Archdale COMBS' first marriag e eit her - raisin g th e large , still-unanswered questio n as t o whether Arch dal e COMBS ma y have left issue by e arlie r marriage(s). Ho pefu lly, an int ensive study of la nd rec ords, currently un derwa y, will prov ide the answer.

Based on the dates, it appears that the above land re c o r d s refer to two distinct and separate tracts of la n d - t h e e arlier records for a two-thirds moiety (comm o n share ) o f 23 8 acres on the south side of the Rapp a i n what wou ld b ecom e Essex County, and the latter 20 0 acr es "in th e Fores t," a nd possibly on the north sid e of th e Rappahan nock Riv er i n what would become Richmo nd Count y. No furth er record s hav e been located yet fo r this lan d, and it i s not know n yet i f the above recor d was an in dication tha t Archdal e COMBS wa s suffering f rom financia l difficultie s, althoug h it may b e tellin g that Archdal e had sold th e Essex lan d that same y ear.

That his life was not without some problems was mad e c l e a r by a power of attorney, dated 22 Jun 1668, an d reco rd e d 1 0 Jul 1668, from Archdall COMBE of Rappa. C o. to " m y fr ien d Warwick CAMMOCK of the same county m y lawful l at torne y t o answer the suite of Majr. John WE IR... (Ol d Rap pa. Co ., V a. DB 3:479-480) Later that sam e year , a powe r of atto rne y dated & recorded 2 Nov 1668 , fro m Archdall e COMBE t o "lov eing Friende Mr. Warrick e CAMMO CKE his att orney to a cknowle dge judgemt. to Capt . Alexr . FLEMING an d Raleigh TR AVERS fo r what Tobacco s hall app eare due to t hem as Admrs . of Joh n BRADFORD Mil ler dec'd . (Old Rap Co. , Va DB Par t I of 1668 -1670:72)

The details of the suit brought by John WEIR are not k n o w n , but the second record above indicates that Archda l e C OM B S had not yet paid John BRADFORD his debt due 1 0 O ct 1 66 8 . Also note that John WEIRE was the (step?) f athe r o f Mar ga ret, wife of (1) John WATTS and (2) Abrah am BL AGG , who w as , years later, security for Archdale' s son , John . Also s e e the 1695 Westmoreland Co VA wil l of Rob ert BEC KINGHAM w h o m Elizabeth, widow of Raleig h TRAVERS , in whi ch BECKING HA M names as his sister an d brother i n law, a J ohn and Eli zab eth COMBS. (See als o Burroughs-V assall-War e Families)

Likewise no further details have been garnered in refe r e n c e to yet another power of attorney dated 22 Dec 16 6 8 , i n wh ich Archdall COMBE appointed "Mr. Jno. FOXHAL L h i s att orne y in a business depending between Mr. LAN E an d m yself e as a lso between Mr. GLOVER and myselfe. , " whi ch w as wit nessed b y Marmaduke HUDSON and Marmadu ke DENNI S (Ol d Rap C o., Va D B Part I of 1668-1670:60) N either Mr . LANE , nor Mr . GLOVE R have been identified ye t; however , give n that th e Archdal e COMBE of Soulbury m ay have bee n in Ir eland duri ng the per iod 1656-1664, i t may be sign ifican t that John F OXHALL'S br other, Abrah am, wrote hi s will i n Dublin in 167 9.

It is not until 1670 that we locate the next menti o n o f A r chdale COMBS in the records of Old Rappa aga i n - thi s ti m e obliquely, but significantly, in a dee d da ted 4 Ju l 167 0 , but not proved until 7 May 1684, fr om "W illiam UN DERWO O D Senyr. of the Parrish of Sittingb orne i n the Coun ty o f Ra ppahannock" to Mr. John FOXHAL L "of Po pe's Cree k in th e Cou nty of Westmoreland, Merch ant," a l ease of UN DERWOOD' S Mill , in which UNDERWOOD d eclares le ases "all h is righ t which h e hath or hereafte r by the de ath of his M other i n Law shoul d have to tha t Grist or Wa ter Mill wit h the app ences: scitu ate lyin g and being i n the County an d Parish a foresaid an d som e time in the o ccupation of Arc hidall COMB E and lat e i n the possessio n of John PAYNE." ( Old Rappa. D B7:108 -111)

As noted earlier, and documented by the above record , W i l l iam UNDERWOOD, Sr., was the eldest son and lawfu l he i r o f C ol. Wm. UNDERWOOD, and the step-son of Eliza beth , r elic t o f Col. Wm. UNDERWOOD and "now wife" of Ar chdal e CO MBS . Wm . UNDERWOOD Sr.'s reference above to hi s Moth er i n La w (ste p-mother) was to Elizabeth (Underwo od) (Un derwo od) C ombs, a nd it is probable that the four teen-yea r dela y betw een sign ing and proving this deed i n 1670, a nd reco rding i t in 1684 , was occasioned by th e death o f Elizabet h, and p robably b y Archdall as well , althoug h we don't kn ow when o r where a s yet. (See Als o 1684 Gua rdianship/Appr enticeshi p records f or Willia m and Charle s COMBS of Old R appa.)

Although we know from this record that by 1670, Arch d a l e w as no longer occupying UNDERWOOD'S Mill, from th e f ol lo win g records, we also know that his departure fr om t h e mil l di d not signal Archdale's departure from Ol d Rap p a Count y sin ce on 17 May 1673, Archdale COMBE [si c] wit ne ssed a t ransac tion between James COGHILL & Pete r OLDE , wh ich was p roved o n 3 Sep 1673. (Old Rappa Deed s, 1668 -1672 , Part I:1 32), an d again on 29 Sep 1674, wh en Pete r OLD t ransferre d the Bil l of Sale back to Jame s COGHILL . (Old R appa DB5:2 38)

In 1674, Archdale and Elizabeth COMBS signed two Old R a p p a . deeds further clarifying their relationship to t h e UN DE RW OODS:

The first, dated 14 Nov 1674, reads: "We, Archdall C O M B E S and Elizabeth COMBES the Lawfull Wife of the sd . Ar ch da l e living and being in the Parish of Sitting Bo urn e o f th e C ounty of Rappa in Virginia...for divers va luab le c auses ...e specially for and in consideration o f 600 a cs. o f lan d mad e over to the sd. Willia m UNDERWO OD decease d and formerly hu sband of th e afsd. El izabeth, t o him, hi s heirs and ass igns foreve r all and ev ery part an d parcel l of the righ t, claim an d remainders i n the third s and Dowr y of th e same formerl y called The Mo unt scituat e lying in a n d being in the Pa rish and Count y afsd wch di d of Right a n d by Law belon g and descend t o the said Eliza beth as b ein g the Relic t of Collo. " s/Arc hdale COMBS an d Elizabet h CO MBS. (Old Rappa C o., Va, D B Part II of 1672-1 676:278- 27 9) .

The above not only identifies Elizabeth as forme r w i f e o f Col. Wm. UNDERWOOD, and now the wife of Archd al e CO MB S, b ut also mentions "her two sons." (althoug h "wh ich t w o sons " is still not yet clear).

The second deed of genealogical interest, was da t e d 2 N o v 1675, from "Archdale COMBS and Elizabeth COM B S Wi fe o f th e sd. Archdale COMBES" to "Capt. Wm. BAL L o f Lanc aste r Coun ty in Virginia, all that right & int eres t o f a parce ll of l and lying in the freshes of Rapp a Riv er o n the Nort h side t he said River wch was give n by Maj or Wi lliam UNDER WOOD of t he County of Rappa dec ed unto t he tw o daughters o f Mr. Jas . UNDERWOOD de ced Wee th e sai d Archdale COM BES & Eliz abeth COMBES." (Ol d Rappa Co . , Va DB Part II o f 1672-1676 :327-328)

Both of the above records have proved to refer to a s i n g l e William UNDERWOOD, the same who died ca 1662, th e C o l . Wm . UNDERWOOD whose last marriage was to the wid ow , El iz abet h (-----) Underwood, later wife of Archdal e CO MBS . Stu die s of Col. Wm. UNDERWOOD'S land confirm t hat h e wa s know n va riously as Mr., Capt., Major and Col onel W m. UN DERWOO D ove r a period of years; thus, the us e of tw o diff erent t itle s in the above records is not s ignifica nt. Alt hough th e fir st of the above two record s refers t o Elizab eth COMB S and h er two sones, later re cords see m to indica te that t he numbe r was at least thr ee (See Be low). This m ay have be en an err or, or it ma y indicate th at Elizabeth' s younges t COMBS so n (William ? Charles?) wa s not yet born.

Only three more records signed by Archdale COMBS ha v e b e e n found in Old Rappahannock, both as witnesses, t h e fir s t d ated 17 Apr 1677, and proved 27 Mar 1678 (Ol d R appa . Re cord s, 1677-1682, Part 1:167) ; the second d ate d 3 Ma r 167 7/8 , and proved the same date as the firs t; a nd th e thir d date d 1 Jan 1677/8 and proved the sam e date.

Whether Archdale COMBS I died in Old Rappa, Staffo r d , o r e ven Maryland or England, or when, is unknow n - on l y tha t h e died after 3 Mar 1677/8 and probably b efor e 7 M ay 168 4.

The year 1684 seems probable given that on 7 May o f t h a t y ear, the same date that Wm. UNDERWOOD, Sr. prov ed t h e F OXHA LL deed, the Old Rappahannock Court ordere d "up o n requ est o f John BUTLER that Charles COMBS serv e the s ai d BUTLE R unti l he attaines the age of one an d twenty y ear s, he th e sai d BUTLER finding him sufficie nt Diett wa shin g lodgin g and a pparrell during the sd te rm and at th e exp iration t herof t o allow him as the Ac t directs fo r custom e or Inden ted Serv ants. (Old Rappah annock OB, 16 83-1686 , p. 20 (27) ) , and o n 4 Sep 1684 , that "Willia m COMBS wa s to be boun d to Mr. Wi lliam UN DERWOOD until h e reached t he age of twe nty one year s ac cording to an or der of the V estry of Sitti ngbourne Par i sh, and assigne d to him from A braham STEPP; t he said U NDERW OOD to provi de for him suc h necessarys whic h belon geth to a n apprent ice. (Old Rappa hannock OB, 1683-1 686 , p. 55) The e arly v estry record ord ering Abraham STE P P (STAPP?) as guard ia n is probably no t extant, and the ir s on, John COMBS wa s p robably alread y of age.

Unfortunately, neither of the above records disclose e i t h e r age nor length of servitude (indenture/apprentice sh ip ) . N o record for John COMBS is found for this tim e per io d , an d it is believed that he had probably alrea dy att ain e d hi s majority, thus was probably born ca 166 2/3. Th e re li nquis hment of her dower by Archdale and El izabet h COMB S o n 14 No v 1674, apparently in return fo r 600 acr es of l an d for he r sons, John and William, ma y indicate , if Char le s was thei r son, that he was bor n after tha t date (Se e als o Essex C o VA). The 1674 reli nquishment h as also cre ated c onfusion i n the past due t o the followi ng record wh ich app ears to hav e been misin terpreted prev iously. The d eed, dat ed 11 Dec 16 91, Rich mond Co (organi zed from Old R appa.), i s from Willia m UN DERWOOD, Jr. t o William THOMA S and includ es the statem e nt:

".Mr. Wm. UNDERWOOD, Sr. "as Marrying the Sister o f t h e s a id Mr. Ammaree BUTLER. And from the said BUTLE R con fe r' d un to Mr. Wm. UNDERWOOD Senr. as marrying th e Siste r o f t he sa id BUTLER and from the said UNDERWOO D convey' d ov er b y Exch ange of the Thirds of land belon ging unt o Mrs . Eliza : COUMB S with consent of the said M rs. Eliza beth C OUMBS un to Willi am UNDERWOOD, Junr., Joh n COUMBES , and Wi lliam COU MBES to t hem their heires o r assignes f orever. " (Richmon d Deeds, 169 2-1694, Rut h & Sam Sparacio , McLean , VA, 1991)

The confusion has arisen not only due to poor synt a x , b u t also from the mistaken belief that "Mr. Wm. UND ER WO OD , Sr ." was the Col. Wm. UNDERWOOD, earlier husban d o f E liz abet h COMBS; and that "Mr. Wm. UNDERWOOD, Jr. " wa s th e so n of C ol. Wm. UNDERWOOD.

Instead, Mr. Wm. UNDERWOOD, Sr., was the son of th e C o l . W m. UNDERWOOD, and husband of Mary BUTLER, siste r o f A mo ry ; and Mr. Wm. UNDERWOOD, Jr. was son of Unkno wn a nd E liz abe th (-----) Underwood (Underwood) Combs. T his m istak en i dent ification has resulted in many resear cher s havin g list ed El izabeth as neáeaaaaeaaaae BUTLE R - whi ch she m ay hav e wel l been, but not by virtue o f the abov e recor d (We con tinu e to seek her ancestry) . Further con fusing t he relatio nship s, of course, was t he fact that t he Rev. A mory BUTLE R had m arried ca 167 1 Elizabeth UNDER WOOD, sist er of Col . Wm. UNDE RWOOD, wi dow of (respective ly) James T AYLOR, Fra ncis SLAUGH TER a nd John CATLETT.

General Notes for Child John Combes

John COMBS appears in the records of Old Rappahann o c k f o r the first time as an adult on 26 Apr 1690, Joh n [ JC ] CO M BS and Wm. UNDERWOOD (presumably William UNDE RWOO D , Sr. ) wi tnessed a deed from James and Ann DABNE Y to Fr an cis ST ERN E (s/in-law of Warwick & Margaret (PO WELL?) C amm ock o f Peum an's End Run on the south side o f the Rapp ahan nock R iver) , for land on the North side o f the Rappa hanno ck Rive r in t hat part of the county whi ch in 1692 w ould b ecome Ri chmon d (Old Rappa DB8:229).

On 11 Dec 1691 John COUMBES, his brother, Willia m a n d h i s mother, "Eliza COUMBS," are named in a deed w here b y hi s h alf-brother, William [OU] UNDERWOOD sold hi s moi et y (sh are ) of the 600 acre tract on Peumans' En d Run se cur ed b y Eliz abeth for her three sons as part o f her dow er s ettle ment a s widow of Col. Wm. UNDERWOOD ( Richmond D B1:7) , an d on 8 Se p 1692 an order was grante d by the Ric hmon d Court s for th e non-appearance of Jno . COMBES i n a sui t by Abrah . BLAGG ( Richmond OB2:38). ( See Also We stmorela nd VA & St . Mary's M D re Abrham. BLA GG)

On 3 Jan 1692/3, John COOMBES of Richmond, planter , s o l d t o Thomas KENDALL, also of Richmond, land (acrea ge n o t l iste d) adjacent to both COOMBES and "Ann his wi fe, " an d Jo hn WI LLIS. This deed, recorded 20 Dec 1693 , is t he on ly re cord f ound of Ann thus far (Richmond Co , Recor ds, 16 92-170 4, p. 9 9). Thomas KENDALL and his wi fe, Mart ha GOFF , wer e the pare nts of William KENDALL wh o later m arried J ohn CO MBS' daught er, Elizabeth.

On the same date, John WILLIS of Richmond also sol d a t r a c t to Thomas KENDALL described as "being betwee n the l a n d o f INDREIN [sic] and Joseph MASON." (ibid. , p. 97) " IN DR EIN " is believed to refer to Edward "Indi an Ned" Gun sto cke r. " This land is further described i n a land paten t da te d 1 3 Mar 1696/7 by John COMBS of Ri chmond for 20 0 acre s ad jace nt the land of William YARET T now Mr. TANK ARD'S , UNDER WOOD' S line, near "Indian Nee ds old field. " (Nort h Neck Pa t Bk 2 :263)

On 8 Oct 1697, the Richmond Courts dismissed a suit br o u g h t by John BENNETT against John COOMBES, "the Plt. n o t p ro se cuting (Richmond OB2:273), and on 7 Sep 1698, J oh n CO OMB E S is mentioned as being in possession of a Co w a nd ye arli n g owned by Arthur NOTWELL (Richmond OB2:33 2)

That John COMBS was "comfortably well off" is indic a t e d b y the fact that he had indentured servants. Thes e i nc lu de d a John HARRIS whom on 4 Nov 1698, was presen te d t o th e co urt by John COOMBS and adjudged to be 13 y ear s o f ag e (Rich mond OB2:363), and Elinor WELCH, who w as p rese nte d to the c ourt on 4 Nov 1702 for having a ba star d chil d an d ordered t o serve her master additiona l tim e for "th e tro uble of hi s House dureing her time o f Chil dbirth." C OOMB S paid her fi ne, in return for whic h she w as ordere d to se rve an additio nal year. (Richmon d OB3:18 7) On 4 Fe b 1702/ 3 John COMBS pet itioned the Ri chmond Co urt, settin g fort h that John HARRI S had absent ed "himsel fe from hi s servic e the space of te n dayes, " and the Cou rt ordere d HARRIS t o serve an addition al y ear. (Richmon d OB3:224-5)
