(Staffor d Co DB P:121-125)
To Captain John Ashby Winchester [Frederick Co VA], De c e m b er 28, 1755. I am very much surprised to hear the g re a t i rr egularities which were allowed of in your Camp . (Frederick VA Poll) Jo:s COMBS, poll taken, Freder i c k C o 2 4 Jul 1758 (Colonial Soldiers of the South, 173 2- 17 74 , Murt ie June Clark, 1983)
At the time of the 1756 deeds of gift from their fat h e r , J oseph I, his brother, John COMBS, Sr., was resid i n g i n Prin ce William. Following his acquisition of hi s f at her' s Overw harton Parish, Stafford County property , ho wev er, h e return ed to the latter county. It is als o poss ibl e (no t yet resea rched) that county changes ha d occurr ed a nd tha t the proper ty on the North Bank fel l later in to Fa uquie r County. A Nor th Neck (VA) surve y in 1760 ind icate s no co unty, but the la nd below was d efinitely tha t onc e (and pos sibly still) owne d by Josep h COMBS I:
7 Jun 1760 (VA NN Survey) Mr. Charles HARDING, no war r a n t , surveyed June 7, 1760; 145 acs. on Bever Dam of A cq u i a b y Brent Town Road; adjoining Joseph COMB'S 576 a cs . a n d 1,3 43 acre tracts, Robt ASHBY, BARBER, Isaac BR IDW EL , Ca rtey W ELLS, FRISTOW. CC - Mr. Nathaniel WILLIA MS a n d Steph en CARP ENTER. Surv. John MAUZY. (Abstract s of Vi rg inia's N orther n Neck Warrants & Surveys: Dunmo re, Shen and oah, Culp eper, P rince William, Fauquier & St afford Co unti es, 1710-1 780, Peg gy Shomo Joyner)
It has not been determined if the above land is th e s a m e o r part of the land deeded Joseph the Younger b y hi s f at he r in 1756, but (a) at the very least, it wa s prob abl y cl os e by, and we know also that part of th e above l an d was t h e 576 acres of land patented by Jose ph COMB S I o n 9 Aug 1 72 6. (Stafford - NN Pat Bk A:211)
Joseph COMBS the Younger, however, also continued to a p p e a r in the records of Frederick over the next few yea r s . H e w as listed on the Frederick County Rent Rolls i n 1 76 4 (n ot n ecessarily an indication of residency, an d ma y ha ve si gnifi ed property ownership only), and in 1 767h e is a lso be lieve d to have probably been the follow ing:
Exxpences of George William FAIRFAX and George WASHI N G T O N accounts to 10 Sep 1767 mention Mr. COMBS (Coloni a l S ol di ers of the South, 1732-1774, Murtie June Clark , 1 983)
By 1768/9, however, Joseph COMBS the Younger was self- s t y l ed as "of Loudoun," and first mention is found of h i s w if e:
(Fauquier Co., VA Deed Book 3, pp. 205 & 373, 1768-9 ) . J o s eph Combs, and his wife Elizabeth, of Loudon Coun t y se l l 10 0 acres on Brenttown Road to Original YOUNG . Th e la n d was p art of a gift of land given to him in 1 756 b y hi s f ather, J oseph Sr. (Fauquier Families, 1759- 1799 : Compr ehen sive inde xed abstracts of Tax and Tithab le Li sts, Mar riag e Bonds an d Minute, Deed, and Will Boo ks, an d Others , Joh n P. Alcoc k (Athens, GA: Iberian Pub lishin g Company , 1994 ) Note: Orig inal YOUNG was a witne ss to t he Oct 178 0 Fauqu ier Co, VA, n uncupative (verbal ) will o f John COMB S, Jr. ( John2, Joseph1)
Eleven years later, in 1779, Joseph and Elizabeth C O M B S o f Loudoun sold additional of the Brenttown Road a cr ea ge:
(Fauquier Co., VA Deed Book 7, p. 242, 1779). Joseph C o m b s , and wife Elizabeth, of Loudoun County, sell 105 a cr e s w he re Brenttown Road fords Dorrells Run to James H OLM ES ; an oth er part of 1756 gift by father. (Fauquier F amil ies , 175 9-17 99: Comprehensive indexed abstracts o f Tax a nd T ithabl e Lis ts, Marriage Bonds and Minute, De ed, an d Wil l Books , and Ot hers, John P. Alcock (Athens , GA: Ib eria n Publishi ng Compan y, 1994)
On 26 Mar 1787, a Joseph COMBS of Loudoun Co, VA tit h e d h i mself and Thomas HOLLAND (Stats: 0-8-7-3-8) (178 7 C en su s o f VA, Loudoun, Personal Property Tax List B , Nett i e Sch rein er-Yantis) Was this Joseph the Younger , son o f J osep h I? W e do not know yet; however, one wou ld expec t th at Jo seph th e Younger, born before 1731, wo uld hav e bee n a non- tithabl e by 1787 if still head of h is own h ouseho ld; thu s it seem s unlikely that the abov e record w as his . Thoma s HOLLAND ha s not been identifie d.
In addition to possible confusion between Joseph CO M B S t h e Younger of Frederick and the "other" Joseph COM B S o f Lo ud oun, it has been necessary to also attempt t o s egre gat e fro m the former two the records of Joseph C OMB S II I of S taffor d, son of John and Seth BULLIT Combs , Sr ., an d grand son o f Joseph COMBS I. JHC took the fir m pos itio n that th e word , Junior, could signify only th at th e abov e Joseph w as th e son of Joseph COMBS, Senior . (so n of Jos eph I and r eferre d to herein as Joseph COM BS th e Younger) . We know, o f cours e, from numerous othe r inst ances, tha t Junior was o ften use d to designate th e young er of two m en of the sam e name, no t necessaril y father a nd son, an d unless there w ere two Jos eph COMB S in this a rea at th e time, then Josep h COMBS, Jr . of S tafford wa s Joseph, so n of John and Set h BULLITT Comb s , Sr., as i s partly docum ented by his 181 0 Stafford Coun t y will, an d is the Josep h COMBS, Jr. (John 2, Joseph1 ) to wh om Jose ph COMBS the Yo unger (Joseph1) dee ded lan d in Fauqui er C o, VA in 1790:
(Fauquier Co., VA Deed Book 10, pp. 373 & 375, 1790) . J o s e ph Combs and wife Elizabeth, of Loudoun County, s el l 2 6 5 ac res on Dorrells Run to Joseph Jr. of Staffor d Co unt y . (Fauq uier Families, 1759-1799: Comprehensiv e index ed a bs tracts o f Tax and Tithable Lists, Marriag e Bonds a nd Mi nut e, Deed , and Will Books, and Others, J ohn P. Alc ock (A then s, GA: I berian Publishing Company , 1994) 179 0 (Fauqui er DB 10:37 3 & 375) Joseph COMBS o f Loudoun to R obert ASHB Y alia s COMB S, 158 a., and Henr y WASHINGTON o f PW, adj. 1 63 a. ( Fauquie r Families.)
The first deed adds the mystery of the identity of t h i s E l izabeth COMBS since Elizabeth HARRISON Combs di e d i n 178 1 . It is possible though that since we don't h av e fu ll dat e s yet (no transcripts yet) on these deeds , th at th e 179 0 ma y be a recording date only. The Rober t ASH BY ali as COM BS i n the second deed above is believe d by m any res earcher s t o have been a natural son of Jos eph COM BS the Y ounger ( so n of Joseph1). Unfortunately , transcri pts of th ese recor d s have not yet been obtain ed; however , the latt er was app ar ently at least partial ly (in conju nction wit h Washington ' s letter above), th e basis for JH C'S stateme nt that Jose p h COMBS the Young er was "a hel l raiser" an d that he may h av e had a "natu ral" son name d Robert ASHB Y alias Combs.
